If this was an isolated incident I wouldn’t mind, but I’ve been doing a lot of SPVP lately and in almost every other game there has been two players – but not the same pair in every match – hurling abuse at anyone who attacks them. They claim to be ‘duelling’, though this seems pretty detrimental to anyone wanting to just play SPVP as it was intended.

I’ve recently returned from a lengthy break having departed GW2 a few months after launch, though I don’t recall this being so prevalent back then. Is it just a stroke of bad luck, or is this the norm these days?

are you joining maps with very low player counts? A lot of people like to take an unpopulated room to use for duels, since there’s no other way to do it.

As far as “abuse” in general. Doesn’t seem any worse lately, but sure you always find some players with big mouths from time to time. Just ignore it or find another room imo.

Just recently I was in (Heart of the Mists) with a friend doing 1v1 Dueling.
I do them with my friends a lot for Fun. We test out each other’s build and put it against each other.

(Yes) Random people join and
(Yes) I let them know we are doing 1v1 dueling

&
(Yes) some listen and kindly back off
(NO) Some don’t listen and ruin the fun so we have to keep leaving match and re-enter an empty one in “Hopes” no one like that would ruin it.

This is the (Only) way to do 1v1 dueling with a friend and having access to all Weapons/Utilities/Traits/Armor sets for the sake of “Fun”. There are no other ways yet.

A Developer told me there will be “Custom Arenas” where we can host our own Private PvP matches for our friends to join only. When that day comes, this should not be an issue anymore.

For now: Try avoiding low populated server matches and join the populated ones so you can play the way it’s intended for your sake.

Just play the way you want to play. Remember, you’re playing this game for your own enjoyment. Not the enjoyment of someone else.

This sounds like self-serving justifications for ruining other people’s fun. Calls to mind of dungeon/tpvp leavers and people who ruin duels in small player count maps.

In OP’s case, if the player count was big, they had no right to hurl insults at you. If the player count was small (1-4) and they were having duels and they let you know that, then they have a reason to be mad.

There are no duel servers at the moment. Report the others. If they want to duel they need to wait for ArenaNet to make a duel feature. Hopefully this will happen soon.

It is not a crime to intrude on someone’s 1v1, after all a pvp server is to be played on by many people. It is however, very courteous and expected to leave the people alone as Anet has provided many different servers that other people can play on. You are doing nothing wrong, some people just get mad for no reason. What raptured has said is pretty much correct,
