Q:
Is it to little to late?
2 months to late.
The problem with any piece of software is that if the user base leaves en mass in the first few months, then you either need to make drastic changes to bring them back or scrap the application and move on to re-design a new version.
A lot of people have quit GW2. With the plethora of games out now (many of which are Free to Play, and thus have a very low barrier of entry) it will be exceptionally hard for Arena Net to get players back.
I for one know that I can’t wait till March for radical changes in order to keep my interest. Every night my guildies / friends hear me say ‘I hate this game’. Yet I only keep playing in the hopes that this patch or the January one will fix the many issues that are prevalent in this game.
i think that spvp have a lot of potential, but anet have to give us more, like deathmach, capture the flag, duel, better lfg/lfteam 3vs3 etc etc soon as possible.
i understand that they have other priority, and they dont wanna give all so soon in one shot, but other game already have it, and a lot of game is free to play…

What games are you talking about?

Tera online going f2p (nice), raiderZ, ESO soon, blade & soul soon, PLANETSIDE 2, that’s just what I’m playing/looking forward to. I’m sure others have been playing games I havnt heard of.

You are 100% right, there are even websites stacked full of 100% free MMO’s.
F2P is the newest thing and a lot of them are doing it better.
It’s not too late, only 5 months after release still, and the game is B2P people will pick it up and drop it multiple times, a lot of people I haven’t seen in over 3 months have come back to pvp.
Comparing GW2 with f2p games is stupid those games don’t have anything on gw2.
The reason a lot of them are going f2p IS gw2.. if their business model was sustainable and their game was good Swtor/tera etc would never have gone F2p.
I’m not one to hold some sort of bitter grudge and stick to it out of some personal code of conduct. If they make the sort of changes I’d like to see, I’ll be back in a heartbeat. Until then, I’ll dabble here and there while I play other games. I don’t really understand how grudges against games work in people, so I feel like saying that many just need to step back, let their anger cool, and wait for their interest to re-ignite when the changes they’d like to see roll in.
It’s an optimistic way of looking at it, and maybe there are loads of people who say “Game isn’t what I wanted right out of the gate, I’ll never play again”. However, GW2 is still a fairly unique experience out on the market with the ability to spend 10 minutes before being fully competitive PvP-viable in an MMO atmosphere. Considering how grindy other games get, that alone will keep my ears perked this way to see what happens.
“He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
the game is B2P…
To put it bluntly, so what?
Whether a game has a sub, is b2p or is completely free is a non-issue, most people leave games because of issues they have with the game itself, not the payment model. And it is whether those issues are still there or not that determines whether someone goes back.
Most of the time you do not even need to try the game again to find out if the issues you had with the game are still there or not, simply ask someone you know who still plays, read the forums, etc. But even if you wish to try out a game again a sub is not a barrier, lots of sub based games offer a few days of free game time to ex-subscribers to try and entice them back.
They are moving in the right direction, but its at a glacial pace. MOBAs are getting bigger and bigger every day while sPvP has maintained a low stagnant population for months that months.
Heck even planetside 2 has partnered with MLG which came out of nowhere. Meaning its closer to an e-sport than sPvP.
People will try new stuff out on patch day, but check back in a month and see how many will stick around.
Even if MMR and ladder somehow get into the game there are still several fundamental issues:
1) Ticket system is a barrier of entry to learning the game at a competitive level as it limits the number of teams who can afford the grind/money it takes to continually queue.
2) After 6 months and 5 nearly identical maps, conquest mode is played out and promotes a stagnant meta that forces everybody into a semi-mirror match
3) Lack of solo queue means the competitive population will always be limited to a small number of hardcore teams. It also means the viewership will remain low.
