Is it worth it to max out my Ranger for PvP?
Once eles get nerfed condi ranger might become a thing. Ranger is viable unless you wan to play at ESL tournaments, so it shouldn’t hold you back. It’s just not the most optimal pick but has its moments.
What do you mean by maxing out btw? You can pvp from lvl 2, PvE gear and level doesn’t matter.
Rangers are really strong in 1v1 situations atm thanks to condi changes and taunt on pets that ignores blocks and evades. But this being a team game it kinda falls flat as soon as more people enter tha fight as you don’t really have group support in the same way as pretty much every other class has.
But if you enjoy playing a ranger then go for it. Pretty much the only place where your class choice has real meaning is full premade ranked arenas where people know how to rotate points and can actually play as a team.

^- This.
I just finished my champion hunter title in SoloQ as a PewPew-Ranger and I still won most of my matches.
Primoridal (S1) & Exalted (S2) & Illustrious (S3) Legend
Ranger is a wonderful class and definitely viable if you just play it in random games for fun.
All we wanted was a GvG.
Since character levels dont matter in PvP and the rank is accountwide, the correct answer to this question is why is this even a question lol? Play your ranger, play your warrior, play whatever you like, everything is worth it
Two things keep Ranger out of viable competitive meta:
- D/D Cele Elementalists
- Mesmers
Without the presence of Eles/Mesmers, everything else in the game is balanced. It isn’t that Ranger is useless, it’s that Eles/Mesmers are over powered in their current states and push Ranger out of viable competitive meta, along with other class archetypes that would otherwise be viable without the presence of Eles/Mesmers.
I’d say mesmers are OK as a counter if they receive a bit more tweaking.
Eles are the root of all evil!!!

I just want to get a few honest opinions on whether or not it’s worth it to max out/keep working on my ranger for PvP?
I feel like rangers are extremely useless and outclassed in every aspect in PvP. At first I figured I was just probably bad at PvP, but I tried sPvP with my level 31 warrior and dominated a few games without even knowing my build.
Has anyone had real success with rangers? Or should I move on to a different class? I really love rangers, but it’s just not fun being outclassed in every game.
If you go watch AG week 29 i think, there is a ranger on the team who wins the tourney. A necro from the abjured is helping with the play by play and they make jokes about the ranger being there but the dude rocks it out. He played great support with his range and took out the mesmer and then he was able to hold his own vs a d/d ele on a cap point. So if you play it right there should be nothing stopping you.
Good Luck
When ele gets nerfed ranger will be viable even though they are already kinda strong if you figure out how landing hits work.
Rangers are durable If you want to see some clips from a power variant you could check my sig for some games and playstyle. Depending on what type of player you are, one way is to stick with a class that has a gameplay you like, and every class should always have at least one spec that is favored in PvP.
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore

Yet this same team lost to abjured in a later ESL even when abjured had a sub that week. Hiro is a great player and I’m not saying Ranger is unviable, but it’s certainly suboptimal in this meta and that’s probably why we’ll never see it truly compete on the same level as ele or mesmer until things change for rangers.

you can’t blame the loss of a team on one class , or call it sup-optimal because it is not many many things change after a first encounter and Abjureds second encounter with the team they would of clearly learned a few things on how to fight Rangers or change up rotations so that D/D ele vs Hiro at Far wouldn’t drag out a fight making mid 4vs4 or 4vs 3 which is much easier and faster to win or break up making rotations faster .
Hiro in the first encounter was a Door Stop / Guard dog hiking between mid and far being a consistant " leave me alone I’m taking your Cap point" so it creates a huge distraction which is easly countered by Swapping up player rotations.
in this meta his build is the best set up for it , going Condi = does not work well vs D/D eles they have the upper hand.
vs Mesmer though the , the role mesmers do is vital to Map movement portals , stealth saves/ repostions . he did well vs that class which is worth its weight in gold.
though as of right now still Balance is still up in the Air , though Rangers are the most Balanced of all Classes right now so they are not Sub-optimal .
and since a Ranger has a impact on the map , the opposing teams rotations ect its doing its job as the team requires.
if they lost to Abjureds Multipul times in a row and every fight had a ranger class in the team then there is somthing not quite right and in Hiros case (its not him) and its the class (which then i would call Sub-optimal) which it clearly is not its going normal from my Watching record 2vs1 to Abjured and that is perfectly normal.

that is terrible logic, are you telling me no one should play anything but 2 d/d eles, 1 necro, 1 thief and 1 engy?
Seriously they won 2 out of the 3 wts and i dont think losing to them is anything to be upset about.
Lets just state the facts, there is a ranger on a esl team and he isnt the weak point of the team. Is he the best player? Well hes definitely not the only reason there losing. So can someone use ranger at a high level to answer the person original question? The answer is yes. Saying rangers arent used very often in high end PvP in GW2 is doodoo. Please name me 5 elite level necros and the answer is you cant. Maybe personal skill is some what attached to this but guess what i saw this ranger play and I can tell hes at a elite level regardless of how most people feel about the class.
Levels do not matter in PvP, and just about every class is viable in PvP in some way. The correct statement would be that some classes are easier to play than other ones.
I grabbed a build off meta battle and played ranger for the first time yesterday and won the majority of my matches. I wish I had started playing it long ago.
The only thing that needs to be posted here is the following:
If you enjoy it, yes.
Thief 80 | Elementalist 80 | Mesmer 80 | Necromancer 80 | Revenant TBA

I have always had success with my Ranger,
The biggest issue you will face is your mental limitations. If you get offended very easily and can’t take the harassment, this isn’t the class for you.
Yes, you can probably find more success by playing the cheese of the month; however, you really aren’t developing as a pvp player. It’s people who play Pokémon and go out and buy a power save to finish the game. Grats, you did something that required little to no skill to do.
Another thing, while you’re learning PvP, it’s better to do so on a class you like. For myself personally, I find Engineer to be very boring and dreadful to play in PvP. I have nothing really against the class, they have their use and played by other people they can be awesome. For myself though, I can’t play 1-2 games without falling asleep.
With my ranger on the other hand, it’s my baby and it’s been my baby since GW1. So, I enjoy finding a way to making him better and more unique. (no long bow isn’t in my kitten nal, neither is bear.)
So here’s a tdlr version of suggestions:
1) Yes you can have success as a Ranger; however, It’s not a pick up and win class like a couple certain classes are at the moment.
2) You should play a class you enjoy playing while learning PvP
3)Stay away from Cheese builds, yes they are good for a reason; however, everyone knows them and everyone should know a counter to them by now.

Yes it is worth it. Ranger is in great spot right now. I’ve had quite a bit of success with condition beastmastery builds. Carrion/celestial amulet and some sort of condition rune. High AoE spike damage and great survivability. Not to mention, unbelievably fun with all the counter abilities we carry.

I’m confused, why do you think “max out” and “keep working on” a ranger have anything at all to do with sPvP?
you don’t deal less damage or have less health because your toon is lvl 34 instead of lvl 80 in spvp land.
