I main necromancer, but lately I’ve been branching out more into mesmer and engineer. But I’m questioning whether or not its worth it to play 3 or 4 different classes. I do play at a casual level, but I hope to do tournaments eventually, and I’m wondering whether or not multiclassing would be helpful or not. Simply put, my time to practice and learn each class is limited, so I’m afraid that playing 3 or 4 classes would hurt me rather than help me in the longrun.

To confound this, with the expansion coming out, I’m questioning what I really want to play. Reaper, chronomancer, revenant/herald, and scrapper all appeal to me, and I feel that my indecisiveness is also a factor in my questioning of the viability of being a multiclasser in this game.

Playing all the classes is good because it will allow you to get used to all the class mechanics and will help you when you face those classes. You might even find a different class that you’d rather main after getting a feel for them.
I would multi-class just enough that you get a feel of what each class does and how to counter it, while remaining focussed on bringing a single class to the top level. If you divide your time too much, you won’t be playing any class at a top level for quite a long time and it will be extremely hard to get into teams as a result of this.

Multi-classing has its perks. Even on the most basic level, some multiclassing gives you insight on things to avoid and what to expect, making your enemies more predictable. It’s never a bad idea to give each class a try as it both familiarizes you with them and gives you a bit of appreciation for what their pros and cons are.

That said, spend too much time bouncing around and you will never totally excel, but as a casual player, as you say, that’s fine. So in your case, I’d say do as you wish, play as many as you’d like.

If you plan to really press your skill levels, I suggest playing a bit of each but mostly focusing on one or two at most for a majority of your games, but still get a feel for other popular “meta-builds” every so often so you can counter them on your primary characters.

That’s my personal advice, but mileage may vary.

He said it all =)

Yeah multi class learn to understand classes and see how they work and how to counter play them.

Nb : ( give it at least one weak to try them, you won’t rock after 1 match with the class.)
You also could get a revelation , and find out necro is not made for you but you rock as a mesmer , for example.

Just do what is fun to you. It is not a big deal to ‘gear up’ your characters in PvP or PvE. That said, if you want to become a serious competitive player, you can only benefit from multiclassing.

You’ll get different answers from different people, i personally think the game is extremely boring if i play anything other than my main class mesmer. And even that is boring if i play PU meta.

Yeah I agree, PU bores me to death. Also cele signet necro bores me to death too. In general I also have a weird complex where I try to get a viable non-meta build that outdoes the actual meta build, which is difficult.

But yeah, I feel as though I can narrow down my list of “mains” to 2 or 3, but it will depend partially on class balance stuff when the expansion launches. I’ll almost assuredly stay with necro, in part because reaper is very strong, and then chronomancer or scrapper will probably be the either primary class or classes I’ll get into. I really liked revenant too for pvp last beta, but with the mallyx rework, it kind of turns me off on it since I don’t really like the power builds.

I wouldn’t fret too much over “Meta-builds”. People like to coin builds because popularity lets them, but in most cases, just play what you enjoy. It’s not like the developers didn’t design the synergy behind most of these “genius meta-builds”. Most specifically, Signet Necro (which I quite enjoy, btw). Everyone saw that build coming a mile away because Gee purposefully built in a lot of synergy between Spite and Curses, and well… We know how Soul Reaping goes in PVP.

Moral of the story, something I try to get others to do as well, try to break the bias of builds because someone called it theirs first. If it makes sense, things will fall into place. If other people discovered the same synergies, who cares. Just have fun. :P

I would say become at least somewhat familiar with every class, but fous on 2 because you never know when Anet will just destroy a class’s viability. For a while Wars were terrible, then they became meta, now they’re basically pure support to the point where you wonder why you aren’t playing another class.

If I hadn’t spent as much time on Engi as I had i would have probably quit until the HoT release. I don’t think it hurts to have a class to fall back on. The game is also not that hard so it’s not like you can’t easily learn a new class. It’s not like dota or lol where different characters play totally different. At the end of the day rotating and properly timing dodges are more important than anything else.

Play the game the way you enjoy it.

I “multiclass” due to boredom, I’m not a pro on any class, but I can definitely hold my own on all classes.

The bonus to “multiclass” is that if you set em all up with your PvP build, it allows you to switch between classes to help counter enemy teams..

EG: I get on mes, my team has a mes already but enemy team is all melee and boon reliant, so I switch to my boon corruption blind/chill spamming necro.

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.
….. And Elementalist.
