Is there any sportsmanship in PvP at all?
Just have fun yourself and if someone flames you, there is cool feature called ignore
If you are 3vs5 and some players on your team are afk because its 100% loss you can choose to play or to be afk.
Live happy.
Not really much sportsmanship in this game at all. I find the people that generally play sPvP in this game to be the worst PvP community I have ever dealt with (and that includes WoW).
It may be on the same level as WoW and it just seems worse since the other team can trash talk and send you messages so easily.

I think there’s something about PvP that just draws some of the worse elements of any community. Just the nature of the beast, as it were. It’s confrontational and competitive and appeals to the more aggressive side of people.
That said, I find most of my experiences with individuals in PvP to be positive. Compared to other games I’ve played, there’s virtually no taunting and other deliberately negative behavior. So I should take that into account in my complaining.
My first MMO was Runescape (I know, I know) and the behavior of the PvPers there was night and day compared to here. It was so bad that I swore off PvP in MMOs for years. GW2 by comparison is much, much better.
It just occurred to me that maybe people think they get more rewards by running up their personal score or something?

Lucky you! Some of the matches I play, there are people who complain a lot when they are losing. Calling their team mates bad, noob, you name it. After a while they focus on nothing but typing and raging, not even helping their team. Once, in a solo queue game, I was constantly being targeted by one of my own team mates because the guy deduced half way through the match that I’m just a bad player!
Of course, I just ignore these kids in PvP, but I kinda feel sorry for being teamed up with some of them.

What class do you play?
Try team arenas instead of solo. I find games much more casual in there. Also chat is normal mostly normal talk and rewards are better.
In soloQ people care about their ranking and there is a lot of rage for that. In Team pvp people who care about rating have their teams so you will be teamed with people who do not really care about theirs.
Oh, I’ve run into the “serious business” types myself. Like I said, nature of the beast.
I just find it a lot worse in other games. A LOT worse.
I’m relatively new and mostly play mesmer as that’s the only class I know reasonably well. Not sure how that is relevant.. I don’t get a lot of rage directed at me personally.
My favorites are the Monday morning quarterbacks. You start a match, and half-way through you’re losing and it’s obvious you aren’t going to win and some PVP “expert” will start complaining that we’re losing because we didn’t do X or Y. One time I suggested that if he had strategy ideas maybe he should suggest them before the match begins, rather than after it’s essentially over. Needless to say, he didn’t appreciate that, and I found his response amusing.
I wish people would remember that there’s a person at the other end of every avatars. I might be a wimp but frankly I don’t even much enjoy stomping people, it seems mean.
There is no sportsmanship hardly at all in this game, selfish players who come in and expect you to let them kill you over and over so they can complete their daily or ones which join only with numerical advantage to gain further easy rewards with minimal effort.
Very little want to actually compete in a fair environment in hot-joins, most will join with 1 or 2 guildies so every time you encounter them you will be triple-teamed and which the downed mechanic gives u no chance.
Not often no. Perhaps I’m just not that sanguine to win but one of my habits is to be constantly checking the number of players. If we’re not matched I usually just wait and see if someone shows up, otherwise I might leave.
I’m not a saint, hardly, but it’s simply not fun either way. We either have one more and crush the enemy or have one less and are crushed. Neither has any sort of incentive to play. I can deal with the one less as long as I am not being zerged but once it becomes a constant I tend to just leave the server.
Just wait until winning matches actually awards something tangible.

I consider it very disappointing that they prioritized gold rewards over fixing the 4v5 and ragequitting problem. Both because fixing the problems is more important, and because the gold is just going to make matters worse.
It’s never fun winning or losing by a landslide amount. Consider, however, that when the game becomes 4v5 or 3v5, the outcome is pretty decided. So, would it not behoove one to hasten the match, wasting less of your and everyone’s time?
I appreciate people who stick it out and still fight a losing battle; I am one of those players. But trying to win a match faster is not a bad thing.

You might know your class well, but this has to got to do with team dynamics. There are far deeper nuances to the game than you might know, and it comes down to the thing called Game Sense.
Game Sense involves adapting to the situation, and information comes from reading enemy positions and what classes are where. You might have won the initial first half of the game, because the opposing team simply cannot handle a 4v4 fight at mid. They do a split push, capitalise on and punish mistakes, and splitting your team up to win the fight overall.
That being said, that comes in the form of a Team PvP perspective. What can be gathered from soloQ is that the other team chances upon members of your team who do not know how to peel, retreat, reset health and consolidate on 2 captured nodes. Instead, 1 of them dies, the other goes down a bit later, and your team at mid has to face with the power of 4. The momentum shifts and everything just snowballs from there.
lol there’s no sportsmanship on the internet bro.
i learned this when I was like 14: if you can’t beat em, join em.
This from a total sportsman btw, I just know not to get sand in my kitten when others dont give respect. either dish it back or walk away. dont cry for someone else to change their behavior.

Try playing a warrior for a couple days and see all the hate that gets spewed your way because of bad players perceptions of the class. lol
I even got this hate before warrior buffs, by the way.
I think there is just too much incentive to steamroll and end the match quickly. Coming from games like quake I find that many people are generally happy to sit out and make an even game where there is no reward involved. Perhaps anet should add the “sit out” option which, like hotjoin, gives you the win bonus regardless of the outcome.

But how does a 3v1 mugging speed up the match? They get 5 points for a kill a few seconds faster? Meh.
Re the other discussion here, of course after saying most people are pretty decent, I was just in a match that featured a couple of spoil-sport brats on my side when we lost. Heh.
It’s always the fault of the other team members to some people I guess, lol.
Sadly you’ll find sPvP is filled with people who take the game WAYYYY to seriously. They’ll shout at you if you’re not perfect, ragequit if you’re getting beat and sometimes if you’re lucky they’ll whisper you with abuse. Just best ignore them. :\
I have noticed the worst players trash talk most. And for some reason their sentences always start with “OMG”
I explain this for myself like this: if they blame someone else for the loss of the team, then nobody will notice they’re bad players. So they just pick up a victim, usually a necro or thief and start to harass them. However, what makes me more mad is the silent approval of the others. If someone start to harass a teammate please tell him to kitten. Don’t be silent and grateful he hasn’t picked you.

I have to agree with you. But the reason noone says anything is because most of us actually prefer playing the game than whining on chat so I just report them if they bashing someone too much.
Besides they have much more experience in being idiots so they are OP and you will lose when trying to communicate with them.
I’m laughing to myself because I’ve played 2 solo Q matches today and they have both featured incredibly bad sportsmanship, both on my own team. It’s like the fates are conspiring to prove I was wrong when I said things weren’t that bad in GW2 PvP.
Even more amusing, I just had the worst sort of crybaby / Monday morning quarterback. We’re in the Svanir map, about to start I give a general “gl” greeting to all as I like to do. Someone in our team asks about assignments, someone else responds. So we start, and we lose both buffs.
Then player #3 on our team — who said NOTHING when the others were discussing assignments — whines like a baby that we lost the buffs and declares he’s going to deliberately AFK for the entire match. Neither team even had 200 points at this point. He then taunts the rest of the team talking about how he’s eating a bagel and so forth.
Then the icing on the cake, he moans that the game is “dead”. Gee, you think meeting people like him might have something to do with it?
I know there’s nothing to be done about this, but…

Unfortunately player skill has nothing to do with whether they talk trash or not. Some very skilled players are still insecure and feel the need to point out why they lost so that they can feel assured their reputation(self ego image) is minimally affected by the loss of any individual match.

Well, if someone say: “WE lost because WE didn’t do X and thus made a mistake” I think it’s okay. It might be useful for next time. I think players who trashtalk are also player who don’t communicate before and expect everyone to realize everything on their own. It might be right, in theory. In reality, everyone makes mistakes during a match, like going to help a teammate that is already dead the moment you reach him, or capping an empty far and then being killed by two enemies who just respawned. What makes the difference is a coherent strategy, or communication.

The community in pvp is horrible, and is the reason why i took many many many breaks.
Every time I come back, its just the same story again with people raging… I have more on my block list tan friends list… almost trpple, actually.

Haha yeah, lots of ppl get their kicks from blocking somebody then sending them whispers(why this even works I have no idea), I just block them then unblock everyone every so often so it doesn’t get cluttered. It’s not like anybody remembers after 5 minutes anyway
Yep the community is laughable. So many times after a match players will whisper me something nasty then block me.
I actually won two legit 4v5’s last night. Felt really good. But yeah people are not very sportsmanlike in this game… I try to be, if the other team is. And I will yell at my team if they are being kittens for no reason. That being said, I do rage at my team a lot in solo q in hopes that they will get their act together :P
I think the final score may effect your mmr. So a crushing 5v3 is better than a 500-300.
I think I am just going to start reporting ALL verbal abuse I see, regardless of source. There’s simply no other way to combat this nonsense.
This, of course, assumes Arenanet does anything about it. I have no idea if they do or not, nor what the threshold for “verbal abuse” really is.
I do know there’s no need for trash-talking and it greatly diminishes PvP and is likely a major reason 90% of players ignore it.

I’d just be happy if they gave me an option to turn off all chat from players on opposing teams. I would still get the occasional after game trash talk, but it would make it a little less annoying. I’d honestly rather go PvP in TOR or WoW where I don’t have to deal with constant trash talkers.
I posted a thread about that a while back and it got little response. One person told me I could turn off map chat, which I realize, but that would get old fast.
I have had a mixed experience, didn’t really get into the whole spvp thing till a month or 2 ago but have seen both extremes. I have met hands down the nicest and most helpful players in the game in spvp, players who are willing to give advice at anytime and are fun to play matches with, on the flip I have also met the most horrible players (personality wise) ever, just very angry people who always yell, cuss at everyone, call everyone bad, send you angry tells and block you, its quite comical at times, players like these I immediately report and put on ignore. And whenever I get singled out by another player in their fit of frustration/rage I just send them a tell asking what I did/doing wrong and I either get a babbling raging idiot and therefore I block immediately or to my surprise I get an apology and some free advice and feedback to improve my play, this usually happens with the higher level players who are just frustrated with playing with us noobs. So I just find with this particular pvp community cooler heads prevail, just do your thing, and do your best to improve match to match, I am a long way from being a good spvp player but I do my best to learn and improve.
Competition breeds trash talk, there is nothing wrong with it! Stop QQing and trash talk some back. You can do this without being mean, seriously. Trash talking and verbal abuse are way different. Don’t confuse the two! I like healthy competition, and having a rival really gets my adrenaline pumping to best him, and their team.
If you’re unhappy with the way it is. Then open up team chat, and help with strategy. Be engaged, and supportive. If you don’t say anything, or just complain here.. then it really isn’t helping.. be the example!
That being said, I do rage at my team a lot in solo q in hopes that they will get their act together :P
It won’t, trust me.
Most of the time, it’s people who like me lost focus and then got nervous because of it. Yelling at them makes it even worse.
And other people just can’t stand raging guys, so won’t listen to you.
because he doesn’t know it himself
I also spend a lot of time in the dueling rooms and aside from a few gankers/trolls you basically see none of this stuff.
The difference? The fighting is just for fun, it doesn’t affect your rank or leaderboard position.
I think that’s what makes so many people start acting like jerks.
Well if its 3v5 or 4v5 i will play no matter if we are the advantages team or we arent. Heck i am playing to have fun, and i have ether way, the one thing is easy mode the other is hard mode.^^
But i agree, i think if someone dced there should be a pause and if he isnt coming back after lets say 3 min end the game ends immediately so that we can move on…
Some system to punish afkler who give up should also be put in place.
As is in another thread floating around, there should be a report button for said afker/leaver. It’s not fair for either team for someone to give up or leave and yes, they should be punished. I think a report button would just make it easier to track or punish the people who leave or afk.

If you are happy regardless of what life throws at you, you usually always won’t use video games to pass the time.
They are a crutch.
Video games are there to entertain people.
This situation doesn’t entertain anyone.
People are better off finding a different game or doing something else than putting up with being beaten down by a video game.
That is tragically an issue on the video games side since its just a weeee bit harder to change humanity.
I had this thief repeatedly talk trash to my entire team when we were losing by 20 points, rather than devoting that time to the game. It astounds me that people can have such horrible attitudes, but what’s worse is it isn’t a rare occurrence. It happens fairly often, and often times it’s more than one person on either team.
There’s sportsmanship in Guild Wars 2, it’s just very poor. There’s nothing you can do but ignore it or kitten them off when they act like babies, I tend to go with the latter. Of course I do tell them to stop fighting each other and fight the enemy first, but that never seems to work.
I could do a whole rant on this subject but it’s probably best I stop seeing as I’m tired and would like to watch my show.
Toodles.
Is quite strange when you go from PvE to PvP realising that ppl in PvP are different… and now the last week because of Anets changes in PvP many PvEers came in PvP and theres a ton of puging because they are new in that mode and they dont know what to do
Skyhammer isn’t really a fair place to judge people. I genuinely can’t blame people for not playing. It’s more fun to alt-tab and do something else.
PvP community here is normal, or slightly above averange.
In terms of skill? That is absolutely not true! Guild Wars 2 skill level is far below average.
As usual lower skill means more hurt feelings which goes to more trash talk.
dont expect them to show mercy coz they maybe like me just wanna keep playing and the faster i win or lose the more i can quaue up again

Dude I was on the same team as you for this match xD, that guy was such a kitten. I literally just gg’ed the map, reported him and dipped out. He was the only one who didn’t say anything at the beginning and it was surprising when he just raged out.
The road to PvP glory is paved with the tear-stained pelts of Care Bears who inadvertently wandered into the Mists. Blame poor signage.
Trash talk is the best part of PvP IMO. At least until someone programs AI that will QQ at you in pidgin English for the duration of its respawn timer. So instead of trying to ruin the fun for those of us who enjoy the real PvP meta, just learn how to use the filter features that are already provided for you.
I think I am just going to start reporting ALL verbal abuse I see, regardless of source. There’s simply no other way to combat this nonsense.
It’s not your job to police other people’s personalities. Also, I doubt you’ll get much traction abusing report when you could just use the block feature as intended.

Try turning off map in your chat filter or creating a custom tab for PvP.
