Is this how everyone wants PvP to be?
In an ideal world with a large player base, you wouldn’t be afraid to drop because there would be better matchups.
Frankly I think the entire notion of displayed ranks should just be dropped in favor of just having better matchups on the personal level. Display just the top 50 to the world and I don’t think anyone would care. This way, nobody gets arrogant nor upset when being in a league they don’t belong in, and you don’t have a system where people who just play a lot can grind their way to being the “most skilled.”

So PvP is the main thing I focus on in Gw2. Across the previous seasons system I enjoyed playing for the entire season amassing around 350 games each time. Even when hitting legendary there was still a desire to keep playing.
This season however I literally log into PvP once every 3 days just to stop decay and maintain my platinum rating. The badge is the main thing I care about and im sure i speak for many PvPers too. I know I don’t have enough skill to climb into Legendary but at the same time I know i’m where I belong however if I play more regularly then i could hit that unlucky streak that sends me falling and unable to climb back up.
So im stuck in this horrible position where I find myself desperately wanting to PvP (its in my blood) but refusing to play more than once every 3 days so I don’t drop rank. Surely I’m not the only one to be feeling like this.
Is this really how everyone wants PvP to be?
Same here! pvp nowadays seems so toxic and stress so just to prevent from decay i only do pvp once a day or 2 days and i already got the ascenscion.
I agree, perhaps just the top 250 or 1000, for the rest of us, just display a percentile.
*waaaa im too scared to play, cause i might loose some pixels" is all i read.
It does bring food for thought though, since you probably represent the general player with no balls, there are probably a lot of players out there that are just “keeping” their rating, cause pixels mean a lot to them, way more than fun….
Which means theese guys are actually the ones that kitten the ladder up, so you cant progress, cause the higher rated guys dont keep playing.
This happens in all MMR games though, especially the closer you get to season end.
Id much rather have this system than the old one still and so would my friends, theres not been more ppl on from my friends list, playing for as many hours as they are now, since before HoT.

Honestly, if you lose rank when you play pvp is because you are not enough good to be in that rank, however maybe its because you stop to play everytime, i mean, if you play a couple of games and then you wait 3 days to play some more games you cant improve and you prob will be worst everytime you “return” to the game.
There is the classic answer that “i lose because of my team” then are you saying that people who can win its so luckly and can climb some rating or stay in the same all the time?
I was a high rated player in SC2 (Not in gw2 because i have less than 500 games) and i can tell you that if i didnt play everyday at least 3 games, next time i played i felt so slow and making so many stupid mistake and doing things out of timing, imagine how i felt if i just leave the game 3 days in a row.. i had to play like 2 or 3 games just to get back my “speed” again and still making stupid mistakes because my mechanics got rusty.
So, you should just play and if you rly are plat then you will get plat at the end of the season. I got gold2 when i did my 10 games and i droped to silver1 almost bronze in a few days, then i played more serious and i could get silver3 and almost gold yesterday after few days trying, prob in this week i could get gold2 again, but ill get gold for sure. So dont panic and play, thats all. Remember that this is a new system and you can NOT take as a reference any rank of last season, i mean bronze is not ambar and plat is not diamond, you just cant compare.
Sorry for my english.
I forgot about saying you another thing, you prob have “Ladder anxiety” but is rly common. You can google it.
Blizzard made a study about Starcraft2 because some people were rly afraid to look for a 1v1 match in the macthmaking. I personaly know some people who press the Search buttom and then they start to sweat and in the end they cancel the search. You just need to relax and feel confident with yourself, if you rly thing that you are plat why are you afraid to lose it? Even if you do it, why cant you get it again? Everyone have bad days and after 4 or 5 losses in a row its better to stop for some hours or even the entire day.
Again sorry for my english
I promised myself I wasn’t going to comment on the forums, but I just can’t help myself
This is why decay needs to be harsher and there needs to be a minimum number of games played to place on the leaderboard.
Currently the pvp season does nothing to motivate players to play ALL season.

The system obvs isn’t perfect but I do enjoy it a lot more than previous seasons. I’ve easily played as many matches as all other seasons together.
In T2 gold I sometimes get really close games so it seems the system is working, for the most part. S1 had the closest match ups, skill wise. However, the ladder had issues as well. More of the games were closer, though.
They need to change it so players must play a minimum of 20 matches to place. Decay would be better as a small constant value. Something like -10 rating a day you don’t play with no rating bonus when you start playing again.
Conspiracy Theory: The system was designed to reduce the number of games played each day! Hey, server processor time and network traffic are expensive!

So you do not want to lose your rank, that’s fine. Nobody does.
But it doesn’t sound like pvp is truly your “main thing”. The past seasons had a horrible system which allowed anyone to reach legendary.
Basically what you are saying is that you don’t want to play because there is no visual progression for you. And that, without judging you, is a general problem in mmo’s. People always want a big cookie for everything they get. But that’s not the spirit of true pvp. You play pvp because you like the pvp itself, not because you want to grind your way through a ladder.
If you know that you won’t reach legendary that’s fine, but what stops you from trying? In pvp it’s all about skill. You play because you want to win. To win you have to be the best and that is the only thing you are striving for. To become better and beat everyone you face. It may not be today, neither tomorrow, but you will eventually rise to the top. And as long as you are having fun in some well balanced games (no matter the actual situation) it doesn’t matter if you move up or down.
All you want is victory and having a good time in the game. Why would a care about a virtual number if you don’t play the game anymore? I just never understand this.
All we wanted was a GvG.

I’m not really afraid despite my post making it sound like that. I win 60-70% of my games. However I know from not only previous seasons but this season that you can go on losing streaks where it feels like no matter how well you play you wont win.
At the start of the season i dropped to low gold from a 12 game losing streak, I seemingly had no control over as I played my best. Then after taking a break and playing the same way I managed to grind my way back to Plat after about 50 games.
I’m not scared of losing. I’m scared of the losing streaks.
No, we all want to pvp. Reason why we are afraid of losing is because matchmaking is horrible and chances that you get bad match are high. Reasons?
1. everyone want short queue times so MM throes w/e into same match
2. there is no meaningful motivation to keep high rated players playing (decay is laughable, no minimal requirements for top 250) so they just afk for the season and those few that do play get paired/play against players of way lower ranks (and obviously not as skilled).
I personally would prefer to sit in 10 min queue for quality match than sit in 1 min queue for match that will be really bad and most likely cost me like 20 rating. They also need to put min. 100 games player or so requirement for being in top 250.
[Teef] guild :>
They should separeate the ladders and ranking from solo queue and team queue.
Some players would have to improve in solo queue and work with that they have in the RNG team, they would work for the solo rank ladder and rank.
Others that like to play in team would gain rank and climb on the team ladder.
Like other pvp games have…
I agree with you. I thought I’d be able to play as much as I want and retain a high/good MMR. Boy was I wrong. I’ve had to work my butt off to grind my way back up. Life as a solo queuer is rough.
“Ladder Anxiety” is a main reason why a lot of people have alt accounts now

I agree, I also miss playing with my friends in pvp. We had a good team but honestly I would rather play with them and lose, this 2 person que is stupid imo. Playing matches is anxiety ridden now as your teamates may have no clue what rotations are and how to win, but in the end its your rating that suffers. Its just a place for noobs to collect shinys now really. The level of play is really bad right now too. Imo they took pvp and made it a gold farming activity now and its no longer about skill and teamwork.
So you do not want to lose your rank, that’s fine. Nobody does.

I disagree, its not about rank its about quality. The quality of the matches are crap now. Unorganized rotations, people playing to farm gold, its all taken the quality of play to a lower standard.
Imo its more fun for my friends and I to que kitten and lose than this 2 person chaos que because at least we can plan a strategy and hold to it and whether we win or lose at least we had fun trying.
The 2 person, matched with 3 randoms is should be renamed to cluster f%$# pvp mode. On the bright side more people will be going to wvw to fight, which is already happening.
The current system doesnt encourage playing enough. This system is suppossed to be for people who enjoy playing the game and who want to improve. While we don’t want to go back to the grind based pip system this system actually lets you play too little. Its ridiculous there are people with well less then 100 games played all over the top 250. This system has been out for month really your going to be number 1 on the list and have an average of like 1 hour of games a week worth of games played? This shouldnt be about grinding too many games OR protecting rank. They system should encourage you to play a decent amount of games to protect your rank something along the lines of about 20 a week. Thats literally a couple hours a week. They need to rethink people coming out placement games with MMRs of 1700+ plus already imo and how decay in general works to make sure top ranked players are you know actually playing the game.
Not sure if this is a feature, I haven’t actually cared about ranked since S2.
But if people “care about the pixels” why not have a feature where you can hide your division akin to titles?
Also I’m pretty sure this game lives based on pixels including the prestige and the customization of them.
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”

This is already a feature. It’s a checkbox in the league tab. It’s on by default.

I find PvP in Gw2 really fun. Thats why I play it instead of PvP in other mmos. However right now I don’t feel like its fun because I go into every game praying for a decent team. Before I had it in my head that my skill mattered and by playing well we will win. But thats ruined with this new system where it is entirely down to not getting matched with noobs.
The addition of titles and tags is exactly what I love. I want to look cool. I want to have something to show for my skill in PvP. But knowing I can lose that cool look by having an unlucky streak of bad team mates is what is ruining my motivation to play.
why do u care about the badge that will go away every season? ur missing out by not playing, get those free ascended and gold.

Well, I sure do: if you can’t maintain your rank without opting out of PvP then you are placed too high, and are essentially avoiding actual gameplay to retain it.
Which I’m one hundred percent behind: it means that you won’t spend time yelling at other players because you believe that you are amaaaazing, and so the loss must be their fault – or whatever other toxic behaviour you end up falling into when you stop getting the rank you “know” you “deserve”.
PvP for the PvPers, is what I’m saying. Not PvP for the people who sulk when they turn out to be less good than they imagine they are.

Did you actually bother to read anything in this post?
I already said I have no problem winning. I fought my way to Plat from Silver T3. What I’m speaking about is how the new system is so dependent on your team mates and its so scary that you will get on an “unlucky” losing streak.
Losing streaks happen. I’ve had at least 3 of them this season. But after every losing streak comes a winning streak.

Absolutely: I one hundred percent read what you wrote, including “I should just stop playing PvP other than the minimum of games required to avoid decay, because I’m scared that I won’t keep the current high ranking I have.”
I just don’t agree with you that “not playing PvP” is the best way to maintain your position, or even that your position in the ladder should be significant enough to you to demand that you do something you (presumably) don’t want, like “not playing PvP” in order to maintain it… at the expense of doing the thing you (presumably) want to do, which is “playing PvP”.
eg: your statements tell us that you care about your position in the ladder, not about PvP. Given the choice of (a) play pvp, or (b) retain ladder position, you chose (b).
