Just not having fun...
Lol QQ goodbye thread? Another guy that doesn’t know how to play and the best way to learn is quitting and flaming mesmer and thieves. Well goodbye.
i mean are u just doing hot join? hot join is not pvp, its a place to test builds. try some tpvp, prolly wont face more than 1 mes and 1 thief in a match, and have teammates to help.
as an ele, it is not true that u have to go bunker. and if you are a bunker (or even soldiers amulet wearing) ele, and you are still getting bursted down by thieves, you are doing it wrong. a balanced / defensive ele is practically a hard counter to thief burst builds. but it is very possible to spec damage on ele, and use your superior mobility and defensive utilities to survive
also, i agree that bunkering is no fun. it can help u win tpvp if you are good at it, and winning is fun if you’re with a team. but it sounds like you are using it for spvp and hiding behind it since its the only way you can stay alive, but even then cant stay alive very well (hint, a lot of ele bunkering comes from active skills).
so since yr not very good at staying alive in spvp which it doesnt really matter there anyway since its a zergfest where point control is secondary, maybe try an offensive build. the trick is to burst that thief before he can do the same to you (hint, jsut cause hes stealthed doesnt mean he isnt there, and pretty much all ele attacks are aoe).
or maybe its just not the right class for you. maybe a necro or even a mesmer might be up your alley.
tho i agree hotjoin in general is not very fun. just go offensive and run with your zerg, you’ll never be able to take on a giant zergball no matter how bunker u are
The issue is that is very hard to balance for top level play and entry level play at the same time. When it is balanced around top level play the entry level players need to get better but it can be incredibly frustrating and it will stop a lot of players from getting better. When it is balanced around entry level play then top level play is awful.
The game is more balanced for top level play right now than for entry level play and with the goal of being an e-sport top level play will always have priority.

the barrier of entry is less than a lot of previous games where u had to gear grind just to be able to compete. everyone is on equal footing in s/tpvp. the only things stopping from someone getting better is practicing their class/combos, learning your enemies class/combos, and figure out some of the nuances of staying alive / rezzing / stomping / map features.
but really, the difference between a good player and a bad player running the exact same build is only practice.. and thats the way it should be IMO

You mean another casual that doesn’t find the game entertaining?
As much as you’d like to forget… completely competant players don’t tend to be the majority of a playerbase…
At least for a game that is going to live a good lifespan…

Thieves are in an awkward spot right now because they’re so easy to play a burst spec with. Ele has the highest skill floor of the eight professions, backstab thief doesn’t even have a skill floor.
So be patient—as you play more you’ll find that your ele will keep getting better and better, but MOST backstab thieves will play very similarly at rank 1 or rank 40 (not all…I realize that thieves have a skill ceiling also, but most thief players never look for it).
Also, as others have noted, 8v8 hotjoin is simply not fun at all, and is only useful for farming glory/rank and scaring away new players. If you have at least half an hour to play, solo-queue a tournament—ANYTHING is better than hotjoin right now, even getting beat pug vs premade in a tourney.
wait for the 14th balance patch. i have a feeling we’ll be seeing a burst nerf across the board. J. Sharp seemed to really care about the casuals. i dont think Thief Wars 2 will be allowed to go on for much longer.
This is not fun. One second you are holding someone or even 2 people at bay. Granted doing no damage because of the build we are forced into, just to get instantly downed without the chance to even use a skill. This is NOT fun.
Sorry you’re not having fun, but what makes you think Ele bunker is the only way to go? Balanced builds are a lot more fun for sPvP, since you’re still fairly tanky but actually have some bite to go with that bark.

isnt that what people were saying about the nov 15th patch?? salvation is always only one patch away :-P
I think that OP is not complaining about thiefs or mesmers in general. It’s annoying when you play 1v1 or 1v2 and doing great, and all of the sudden you’re dead…what happend? You’ve got backstabbed and died from 1 hit. After so much hard work it’s over just like that.

At this moment is impossible to die in 1 hit by a thief not even with 10 stacks of might. Unless you are half or almost dead that we have a trait that does 20% more damage when target is below 50%. So please stop with this nonsense.

By 1 hit… he means 1 combo…
And yeah thieves can commonly near entirely down people in one BasiliskVenom->mug->C&D->backstab->22….
I am going to be honest here. I was having the same issue about month and a half ago, and I just decided to level my characters to 80 and wait for more balance patches. I know I like this game, and it has potential so playing the PvE is not a bad idea to just wait it out. Especially when the leveling is so kitten fast and easy.

OP is complaining about being beaten as an ele bunker in a 2v1…. Isn’t that working as intended? If bunker required 3v1 it would be stupid. Even 2v1 means something is wrong in the basic balance of the game. Imo bunkers need moderate nerf, nad burst needs a minor nerf. Then might see some build variety in this increasingly stagnant game.

@choban – Correct, I work very hard using certain skills and dodges at correct timing to stay alive, just to be at 50% and be instantly downed by 1 Backstab. See below for more details.
@Jericho – Unfortunately I think you are right. I am going to have to move to a Glass Cannon (hope to kill them before they burst me) kind of deal. Only thing I don’t like about GC is once they find out your GC, they target you inevitably.
@NevirSayDie – I try to focus on 5 v 5 sPvP because like I said I am casual player. But have been running into a lot of rank 30+ in 5/5 matches who are dueling. I try to join in as much as I can, and have learned a lot about dealing with different classes. Especially mesmers. However, I hate when thieves disappear and run away from fight and by time they reveal they to far away to Tab target. At the least as an Ele, people can see where I have run off to.
@xbutcherx, I am not talking about 1 combo, I can avoid the combo. However it is 1 hit that I am referring to. I have 15 – 16k life, this is not a L2P issue as I get complimented all the time by tpvp players who are impressed by me. And if I didn’t make it clear, I hate the stealth aspect of the 2 classes. Mesmer has ton’s of evade options / distractions even if they don’t spec bunker. Thief also has the ability to evade just by using attacks, and to escape unseen.
@Psikerlord – I do not mind losing 2 v 1. Matter of fact I usually don’t lose (don’t kill them either), I hold the enemies attention until backup can arrive and we can take the point. What I was saying was it’s ridiculous to be downed by 1 hit from half life with Protection boon up (33% reduction on damage). Being hit for 8k with protection on… That means without Protection the 1 backstab would have done 10,640 damage with 1 button… This means if a thief sits back and watches from a distance he/she can stealth in behind someone mid-fight and instantly down them, I do not see how this can be considered good. But a lot of players say it is a “tactic” for being a glass cannon… Maybe I do just suck at this game, or I can believe that something is not balanced fully, which I will go with the balance issue. I am by no chance a Pro who plays 8 hours a day, but I know my profession, I know what attunements to go into and when I should hit my “Oh Sh..” button to get the heck out of there. Not having a chance to hit those buttons because insta-gibbed, that’s my problem.

I really like this game and I hope the new patch on the 14 truly make some significant changes. While I mainly play in WvW, I find it frustrating that two classes have pretty much no down side to it. While warriors can hit really hard, they are easier to counter. Thief right now is almost impossible, at least for my class and engineer. Thief comes burst u down, if u put up and even fight they stealth, heal up and start again. If they are about to lose, stealth and run away. Mesmer too. It too easy to escape when they make a mistake. So I don’t care that you hit for 14k I can go toughness and turn that into 4-7k thats with 3600 armor. But please take away the ability to stealth in combat, and this game would feel more balance. Just my thoughts.
The game got boring we need new maps and game modes. At least pvp wise. Pve is awesome dont get me wrong.

That’s your answer to everything, those of you who dominate a game with an overwhelming number of one single charater or two and then the tournaments are not a challenge of who is better on the keyboard, it’s just how good is my bunker build and how long can I hold out – and it’s darn strange that I don’t see Rangers in this conversation anywhere.
Get over it, it’s not about qq’ing, it’s about being able to have an enjoyable tpvp or spvp and win some of the time, not all of the time.
Many of the characters in GW2 are not as good as the two and Rangers are consistently on the bottom rung and others like elementalists are also out of luck with most combos of characters in spvp or tpvp.
How about this… if it is more than three in any pvp, there be no “three thieves” to or more on any one side and maybe even include the less powerful as a necessity to going into 8v8 or any tpvp one to one ratios and not the overwhelming numbers of types of characters on one side or the other that has players just sit back from their keyboards and ride out a bad instance – or more until the balance tilts in their favor…. ridiculous.

It has been killed and buried on Nov. 15. The changes that are needed are too vast to be implemented in any sort of a timely manner.
Only the best of the best become e-sports games.

The patch on the 14th won’t be a huge game changer for sPvP there should be some nice changes through balance but we probably won’t be seeing anything other than that. ANet will be on the e-sport rise in 2013 sometime I would take bets on it all day long, they have experience making an incredibly fun PvP game and they are heading in the right direction with features they are working on.
Only problem I have with thieves is that there can be more than 1 of them on a team.
This game cant be an e-sport with capture base game mode since all it is is a zerg fest even when it is only 5v5. Bring team death match or something, capture point is just a random BG zerg fest like WoW.
This game simply has worst pvp system i have ever seen, and i played wow, war, aoc, gw 1 and currently play swtor.Combat is probably best ive seen but everything else is simply sub-standard. My impression is that pvp system is made by someone who is stil learning how pvp system should work.My advice? release new and fun spvp game modes asap so that people ( casual pvpers mainly which are the largest part of pvp community in any mmo) can login and actually have fun while pvping.Otherwise, you will end up with empty servers with few “hardcore” paid tpvp teams playing against eachother.

High level play the game isn’t a zergfest. Once you get into a coordinated team it is a lot about map control/awareness and combat so it is really well suited for a team e-sport. The hotjoins are pretty much a zergfest and the game really isn’t fun without an organized team and new game modes would work wonders for the non e-athlete pvp crowd.
