Latency hacks
I know this was a thing in WOW PVP. There have been times in a match where I get hit with major lag at just the wrong moment. I did a little research and apparently these programs are out there. What does Anet do to protect the game’s integrity against hacks like this?
No one’s ddosing you in ranked pvp.

You say the same thing every single time someone has questions or comments on cheating. To deny it outright is evidence that you either: are cheating; are totally ignoring facts, statistics and otherwise honest reports of it; are forgetting that reporting vehicles exist in game because Anet anticipates, like other mmos, people will try and do cheat. Please stop trolling people who are concerned for the integrity of GW2.

…why in the world would someone ddos you?
I’ve experienced lag spikes in pvp. It seems like they drag on forever, but it’s really about 3 seconds of frozen screen and then back at it.
Never occurred to me it was someone cheating. Yeah, one time it happened when I triggered a DH’s traps and when the lag spike ended, I was only half health and recovered quickly. Don’t think anyone is cheating, just think it’s stuff in the internet that I don’t understand.
…why in the world would someone ddos you?
Do you really have to ask why people cheat, shouldn’t it be obvious?
Somehow I had huge lags and a dc without the chance to reconnect today as well. Strange thing is I didn’t have this for months.
It’s more likely a problem with their servers tbh, or routing issues.
ANet can’t do absolutely anything. No one can. If you are a victim of DDoS, consult your ISP. Plain and simple. All those DDoS/latency hack stuff are out of ANet and any game dev hands really. It’s networking.
It’s like blaming WhatsApp/Snapchat for not showing pictures when you’ve ran out of data on your mobile plan. It’s kind of out of their hands
If it’s somehow consoling: I’m having lagspikes too – my pingplotter is running all the time so I actually see where the connection is bad, or better should see it.
I have a new router which doesn’t work too well atm, so i’m sometimes having nasty lags because of that. Then my internet provider thinks that throtteling is a good thing so one of the 12 hubs usually has got 100% packet loss – my game still works but it’s laggy.
Sometimes I have some minor spikes on ncsoft but that’s pretty rare but I do have lags ~2 seconds freezes which are unexplained. That in wvw and PvE and probably also pvp. so I guess no one is hacking you but the game has got some issues at the moment.
Love the response from Soothsayer btw. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Hacks & Cheats do exist in GW2. Run a google search, learn how to identify it and how to report it.
But yeah, I’ve experienced a lot of random lag spikes to the point of DCing during season 2. I’ve never had this problem before season 2 and it doesn’t matter who’s ISP I am using “I play at many different locations”. It only ever happens to me while I’m in a pvp match. Usually when my team is winning. Never happens in PvE or WvW.

I started this thread because I came across a blog that was offering downloads for various gw2 cheat hacks. One of them was a lag hack. Not really sure how you can be proud of a win that you have to cheat to get…
They way they describe the lag hack in the blog doesn’t sound like a ddos attack since you need a target ip address

Yup, I kept on lagging g though rout the season, I remeber playing against a mesmer hacker. And 5o day I was teamed against a thief tper, to kill him I had to cleave him, stomping him wouldn’t work ( tried to confirm my suspicion). He kept on TP ing from base to our home point in a sec.

Did you even read the thread? ? Why are you assuming it’s his router?? Or have you SKIPPED THE PART where he said he researched the subject???

OP you misread the hack. A lag hack, or lag switch is used on the USER to mess with the system. Create just enough lag to get away with some action.
Not very useful in gw2 AFAIK. Usually used in FPSs I think. Because shots will still register.
It can NOT work on other players. The only conceivable way I might imagine something like that actually working would be some hack that creates a lot of high intensity graphics on screen to create graphical lag, but that’d be super obvious.
If you are concerned about DDoS please refer to my long post in https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/How-do-you-protect-yourself-from-DDoS-O/first#post6093649 thread.

I did read his post. Did you read mine? The link? Anet has secure servers. That’s all they need to do. If someone is truly causing him lag, then it is a DDoS, which is a fault on his end, not Anets.
Funny, cause you just said above “Not very useful in gw2 AFAIK. Usually used in FPSs I think. Because shots will still register.” And yet , you are blaming it on the OP( post above). Cheating is cheating, being fps blocked as you have stated, even for 0.5 sec is a huge deal. You could have done lots of stuff in those 0.5 s.
If those hacks are so unsignificant, why are they still being made??

You didn’t understand me or how the hacks would work. OP misunderstood how the hack works.
There is no fps block. There is no lag hack. Ok?
There appears to be (as he “researched”) a lag hack that will lag out the user of the hack. Its about as useful as being laggy in pvp which the OP is complaining about.
They make them because its a hobby and its fun for them. Not because of usefulness.
Wow, now that’s a wierd hack. So basically, you are lagging yourself out to win games??

Not exactly, it could be useful on FPSs depending on the lag compensation mechanism. From the explanation devs gave about the way lag compensation works in GW2 it shouldn’t really do anything beneficial…

The community is very small. Everyone knows everyone, even if it’s just a name you always see in the mists. Sometimes people form friends, rivalries or even grudges. If you use TS often, like every night often and play with many different groups, your ISP address is known within the community by someone and I guarantee it.
You do know that lag hacks are literally the oldest trick in the book right? I knew people who were DCing players off of Ultima Online and Diablo 1 back in 1996 man. No matter what firewalls are in a game or it’s servers, someone always figures out how to do it. Then they spam it as a download on some forum in hopes of becoming hacker cool famous.
This conflict has been present since the beginning of online gaming and it won’t be going away anytime soon, if ever. It truly divides gamers in to two very differnet types: legit players and cheaters.

I suggest reading the entire thread for clarification. The link to the other thread goes into further detail about DDoS attacks.
And it has nothing to do with Anet if you are advertising your IP through secondary programs.

So are you saying there is nothing that a user could upload along with his/her gaming data that could slow down the instance of a pvp match?

I EXPLAINED WHEN I’M HAVING LAGS AND I’M HAVING RANDOM LAGS IN GW2 LATELY. I KNOW WHY I HAVE SOME OF THEM BUT MOST FREEZES ARE UNEXPLAINED.
HE MIGHT HAVE RESEARCHED THE SUBJECT AFTER I WROTE BUT BEFORE THAT HE WAS JUST COMPLAINING ABOUT HACKERS LAGGING HIM OUT.
Lagging yourself out in online games has its benefits. In shooters as Mightybird suggested the game lag logic sometimes gives you “evade frames” because of ping thresholds that every online has.
In Gw2 this could appear like this https://www.twitch.tv/whiteravensociety/v/41348589
tl;dr – Your game client thinks the downed player is next to you, but the server knows they are in position B but you don’t know that because the player has lagged out for ya. And you can’t finish the stomp. Ever. Unless you go to the actual spot, which is kind of hard if you don’t have tracing/channeling abilities.

That is virtually impossible.
I remeber last year, Lol had a hack which could stop the game by (idk) DDOS ing the server and at the end, the game would disappear from your match history. Needless to say, no points were rewarded. My question is if that’s possible, lagging the game instance, then is it possible that someone is doing the same thing in gw2?
And btw they were called DROP HACKS in lol. Here is a thread on the subject:

Not practical to attempt to try to do anything like this for some one who actually knows how. In order to (DDOS) some one, one must know your public IP address, the interface coming from your router to your ISP. Then one must transmit packets from their computer through your router to your computer in rapid succession as to overload your interface with ICMP packets, etc, just enough to access security protocols but overload your individual IP Address, which is not feasible considering the risk to reward ratio. I’m no hacker but I am a network engineer, I don’t know if there’s newer easier utilities to go about it but this is the common scenario for something not commonly occurring among normal workstation users.
btw, no one can get your IP without gaining access to the servers the game is hosted on and I assume that the game servers theirselves only have relative information on your IP address, If the databse was setup like it should be, even if you know the character information and if you could gain access to their servers you would never learn the IP address of individual players as that information is likely encrypted on another server which is encrypted as well.
(edited by Littlefeather.8623)
Drop hacks are based on exploiting a bug or weak point in the server, they tend to result in everyone in the match DCing. As far as I know you cannot target individual players or teams with it.
So if someone used it you probably wouldn’t lose pips in gw2.
But you are right, it is possible, though as far as I know I haven’t heard of one for gw2. But those sorts of things aren’t freely advertised (free ones are a scam.)
edit: just wanted to say, if it does exist it’d be pretty rare I’d think

You just have to choke the router. Given the state home routers are in, with cheap 10/100mbps ports it’s a wonder more people aren’t getting DDoSed
I know I never have freezes in any gw2 content but just once exactly at the time a tranq buff has appeared and a TF started – BAM 10 seconds freeze.
Haven’t happened in any other TF or game for me.. And having that happen exactly at tranq time makes me wonder.
No one’s ddosing you in ranked pvp.
You say the same thing every single time someone has questions or comments on cheating.
Except it’s valid here. DDoS is the only ways another player can force lag onto another player.
You can make yourself lag by interfering with your packets, but since GW2 isn’t client to client you cannot interfere with another player’s connection to the server.
The “I always lag at key moments” is the result of bias. Players are far more sensitive to lag when they are in the middle of a play, which means they mentally place a ton of emphasis on those few cases where they lag during a key play.

Improbability is not the same as impossibility. To deny something as an impossibility, e.g. latency hacks, it would have to be an impossibility everywhere, all the time. Clearly this is not the case. They exist, as do many other ways of cheating; which simply means, that no matter how improbable it might be in GW2, it is not an impossibility and therefore, cannot be ruled out as a form of cheating in sPvP.
(edited by Soothsayer.9206)
So the only way to do a targeted “lag” attack at another player is to DDoS them. This is certainly possible to do if you’re careless and share your IP all over the place. It’s also nothing that Anet can possibly control, because the DDoS attack doesn’t utilize Anet servers at all. It functions by overloading your local connection, not by targeting your connection to GW2 specifically. If you’re actually getting DDoSed, that’s between you and your ISP.
There are, as was mentioned, drop hacks. These are extremely unlikely to exist for any length of time due to them being severe vulnerabilities in the game servers, but they also don’t fit the situation at all. A drop hack will affect everyone connected to the server equally, not just one targeted person.
It’s also worth mentioning that DDoS is not a hack. DDoS has nothing to do with the game itself. It simply attacks general connections to the Internet with a brute force method.
I know this was a thing in WOW PVP. There have been times in a match where I get hit with major lag at just the wrong moment. I did a little research and apparently these programs are out there. What does Anet do to protect the game’s integrity against hacks like this?
Happens to me constantly. 4-5 second delay in fights is pretty much normal, now.
Wierd that people are complaining about lag spikes on patch Tuesday. Could it possibly be related to Windows updates?

You send packages to the server, which then sends different packages to the rest of the clients. Nobody will notice your injected packets if they are invalid.
ddosing? do not worry, that is happening only in highest possible competitive level Pro League, and no one from Anet or ESL team cares, that is how you create a successfull e-sport game, right..
