Say #25 is inactive (sorry to whoever that is atm, just using you as an example).

The inactive #25 got there by having a higher rating than the active #26. Whether or not they are playing now doesn’t change the fact that they had to play at some point to get that rating.

@Mammoth they sure did get there by that, but that’s a long time ago, and I already showed that that guy plays once a month on his main account before. Do you think he should be there forever and just win 1 game per month just because he fought there a couple months ago? You don’t think anyone has gotten better in past couple months?

Also that’s just 14 wins and 3 losses, how you know he didn’t “play at odd hours and beat solo que as a premade”

Because 14-3 vs pugs wouldn’t even get your rating into the 90% range. You need to be playing against other high rated players to get to #7 with just 17 games played. Although to be fair, the high volatility glicko gives you when you have a low number of games played means that a good record with only a few games played will gain you a lot more rating than the same record after you’ve played a few hundred games.

Alright so how did Dreamer go from #2, to not top 25 on leaderboards and back to #2 in 1 game? He really better than the 24+ people in-between him because he probably beat the #2 guy on leaderboard? Rating that volatile at top 25? 1 win bring you to #2 even not on top 25.

Can’t tell you that sorry since I don’t know what their decay mechanism is. I can say that your volatility will be quite high if you’ve been inactive for a long period of time, but I don’t know what they’re using as a ratings period. Could be an hour, could be a month. If you take a long break then come back and lose a game, you’re going to lose a lot of rating.

I am actually a little curious about it, since elo is a zero sum game, adding an artificial rating drain will cause problems. I guess it’s affordable if you have a good supply of new players always coming in, and more people with losing records quitting than those with winning records. Otherwise you need something interesting going on.

People buy 2nd accounts for the sole purpose of queueing into teams that are higher than their mains. This causes the people that are high rated to win almost nothing for the win, and lose a lot for the loss. Then, when your main account is in first you don’t have to play anymore except maybe one game a week (maybe it’s a month for decay? idk) at odd hours/when no other top teams are playing.

This is what a lot of people are doing, for example jumper did this to get #1, just saying. In the future if leaderboards are going to be taken seriously this issue needs to have a fix.

Show me one game where people buy second accounts to maintain their position.

they need to make you have to play atleast 10 games per week or the accounts goes inactive for leaderboards and dont show anymore

after 4 weeks there should be decay harder than it is now (in top 1000 it should be decay per week)

I’m not sure what OP was going for exactly, but what I took from it was that Anet needs to examine how rank decays – they currently have a system where you can get your “main” account into high standing, then just 1 game a month to keep it there while you screw around on a secondary account. It defeats the whole purpose of the leaderboards.

You can’t really police second accounts (and even if you could, it would be pointless and kitten off the community), so they need to change the way leaderboard position decays to discourage this silliness (I’m making the assumption OP is correct – I have no idea how prevalent second accounts are for leaderboard abuse purposes is).

Maybe SoloQ will help fix it a bit? Players who can’t always play with their team can Solo Q on their main accounts and not have to worry about team rank… though Anet will still need to make some adjustments to rank decay rate regardless.

Rank decay is definitely too slow. If I made a ranking system, you would have to actively fight to hold your spot. It’s like those teams in WoW who would pick the most overpowered team they possibly could at the very start of the season (fully geared from the previous season) and rush to the top as fast as possible then sit on the rating for the entire season and never play another match to make sure they get “gladiator” titles.

devs will not do something about 2nd accounts

-First They earn money from the 2nd accounts
-Secondly its like a new account (so meaning its LIKE considered as Another player)
-Third you can do it too
-Fourth devs can implement something else about ladder decay so they will lose their rank if they dont play
-Fifth they can remove the leaderboards and replace it with TEAM leaderboards and make a Team Roster with its own rating
-Sixth implement other stuffs (who knows what stuffs are we talking about)

We went 12-3 duo queueing together, and that placed the account in the top 10. Since then I’ve played 2 games on that account every month or so just to halt its ELO decay, but seeing as its about the same rank as my main account anyway, it’s not taking any more or less rating from our opponents than I otherwise would.

It’s funny because he actually has 3.

Its not hard to fix this phenomenon. Unless Arena net wants to have only 500 players with each player having a second (third) account.

Each time a player (s) groups up with another new player (s) then he will start off with a new rating. Like League of Legends or how it was with Warcraft 3.

This system is beyond stupidity and in no way does it reflect true positioning.

At the moment the only people that deserve to be anywhere in there are ONLY people that have been playing with only main accounts with other people with main accounts which in essence is no one except few exceptions (questionable).
