Leaderboards - How it really works?
To make it simple:
You win, you go up.
You lose, you go down.
It depends on who you beat, not on your win/loss.
Let’s say you have 50 win and 500 loss, if you beat a lot of good teams in a row you’ll be ranked high, even if you lost a lot before.

The leaderboard is determined by two factors: MMR and Decay.
MMR? MMR stands for Matchmaking rating, a hidden system rating your player “skill”. The system used to determine your rating in GW2 is Glicko. Similar systems are also uses in games like lol, dota2, sc2 and chess.
The MMR is used to assign players to your, and your enemy team with a similar rating (as close as possible) and therefore with similar ‘skill’ at any given time.
Decay? After a certain amount of time you haven’t played, you will loose your placement in the ladder, and and therefore your leaderboard position is constantly falling. How ever, this effect only influence your leaderboard position, and NOT the above mentioned MMR.
