Leaderboards? Whats the point of it?
I don’t get it why leaderboards are done in such a weird way? First you can’t see it ingame, for some reason you need to go to website.. Second you can’t just see in what position you are if you are not in 1000 ranking or so. Does anyone find such crappy leaderboard good?..
Why Anet can’t make it normal and be able to see your position, does not matter what it is? And be able to see it ingame? Or I don’t know something here maybe?
I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s not hard to just go to the website. Yes, it’s not updated realtime, but that’s because it would suck up way more resources than is necessary for something like this.
And if you’re under the top 1000, you can still see your rank. It’s just shown as a percent instead of an exact position.

So what does that percentage mean? higher percentage, higher ranking or lower ranking? It is really weird, why can’t they make you see real number in position you are..
It’s like Anet is trying to be different for the sake to be different.

Higher percentage, higher ranking.
Well one of the reasons they use % is most likely to avoid showing that there are couple thousand pvp players from couple million game copies bought.
Is there someone still looking at leaderboards? lol i’m going pug since months and tonight i discovered i’m top 300 (And i don’t know how is it possible since pugging is not really the best way to go tpvp..thought i was somewhere between 800 and x% oblivion) just because a friend told me while he was looking for his position in soloq…noone really cares bout ladder, it’s broken (Come on pug in top 300? Seriously?), it’s dominated by fotm riders and it’s totally worthless when it comes to rewards (That’s why i stopped giving kittens to it months ago)
Play, have fun and don’t care about ladder…at the end of the day you get nothing from it even if you are top 10…no reason to tryhard going boring fotm bunker meta

Well I don’t use fotm and wasn’t trying hard to get better rank, but I was curious at what position I am, thats all.
Yeah I think too that Anet only shows percentage as ranking to hide the fact the not many players are playing PvP.
In fact, it has no practical use. You don’t get anything from it, you’re crippling your rating by not using pure fotm builds, it does say barely anything about your personal skill since conquest in team play and should be considered in team ladderboard. But you can’t make “arena bracket” team so it classifies you wrong.
Not even talking about yoloqueue, one time I was top 200 because I had just better setups/more guardians on my teams and/or didn’t get single skyham, the other day I fell to top 500 just because myteam compositions weren’t good and I was getting skyham 90% of time.
I’d say, ignore current ladders as a whole, they show your RNG luck mainly

In 2011 a representative of anet claimed gw2 would have ladders. Leaderboards were implemented because the spvp community “asked” for them.
Leaderboards are pretty meaningless. The meta is driven by skilless builds, and it is also almost impossible to recover from a low leaderboard’s ranking at solo queue.
I used to range around 91%-600th as an elementalist, but now I’m at a lowly 84% and being matched with people that don’t know how to restore a trebuchet with the bundle in their hands, and guardians auto-attacking with scepter far away opponents instead of rezzing allies at their side. It’s kinda funny, because I also see better players at around this rank, and some matchups are not any easier than matchups 1000-2000 ranks above. I assume those players have been sucked by the leaderboard’s black hole too, and find themselves unable to free from their ranking.

Ranking high on the leaderboard means you understand what builds and strategies are most likely to lead to winning and actually utilize them as such.
Sure, you could be really knowledgeable without playing the meta and maybe you are the most 1337 skilled player in the game, but just don’t get ahead because you play a D/D ele or something, but that’s a shortcoming of just about any type of leaderboard.
In the end, the leaderboard isn’t simply a measure of skill, but a measure of competitiveness. To succeed, you need a combination of skill, drive, and enough play time to make something of it.
just to tell you a short story about our beloved ranking system:
14:00 Ranked about 850 in tpvp
14:30 – 17:00 played some matches with friends -not ranked- won about 80% (~10 matches)
18:00 wasn’t ranked anymore
does it make sense?
HELL NO!
does Anet care?
no single F*** was given!
Solution:
don’t give a F*** !

And then after each victory you work hard for, you get a 4v5 and go back down.
The leaderboards are worthless. Both achievement leaderboard, pvp leaderboard and wvw leaderboard.

But then, there shouldn’t be players with less than 30 games played on the top 100. Experience isn’t really reflected.
The system should be way more explicit in my opinion( i.e same as in GW1). Average ranking per team. You win, you get +2 ( max +15, depending on opponent). You lose, you get -2( max -15).
Ya, the leaderboards right now are meaningless and really don’t lair you up with the right people atm. Let’s just hope that that these new ladders Anet is implementing will be worth all the hard work they’re putting into them and actually work. I’m excited for all the new changes coming, I just hope they aren’t too far away.

Play enough games and that averages out.
@ Abazigal: Agreed. I wish there was a larger games played requirement for high positions of the leaderboards.
TeamQ still has some authenticity since certain randomness is taken out. (Put balance aside)
SoloQ on the other hand, forget it.
The other leaderboards are not really what I want to see. I wish they would have dungeon-related leaderboards with speed-clears (Blizzard did it) and GvG ones with designated GvG maps (or at least one) to queue for and face each other off.

Leaderboards are ok.
Team leaderboard shows people who are on good teams. That’s the intent and it works well.
Solo shows people who can either carry team, or people who play OP specs.
The problem with solo queue leaderboards is a problem with solo queue in general. Players in solo queue rarely coordinate or help each other. It’s all about being able to win fights (or stalemate) 1v1. As a result, “selfish” builds geared toward 1v1 succeed. Due to trait and skill balance and available stat combinations, certain professions are better at it.

I sure hope they will look into fixing the match making system.
I played with 3 guildies and a random today. None of us are even on the leaderboard. We got paired with a team in the top 30.
In solo q you have to endure the 4vs5 and 2 maps that should not be there.
I would love to see a fix to this tbh. Without a fix, the leaderboard will imo continue to be pretty meaningless.

Ya I’m expecting the matchmaking improvements to go hand in hand with the ladders.
