Locked prof/race/gender/armor/size combos?
That’s not the way to go… way too specific. Players need to be able to get their “personality” across by customizing their character. It’s not hard to tell a class at all if the models are reasonably sized, this game is very visual. The problem is a lot simpler, it’s just the tiny asura with tiny weapons. It’s just hard to see their details and armor, they’re really the only ones it’s hard to tell what they are just by looking at the model and when a whole team is running them it’s just… ugh.
I think for serious tournaments Asura should just not be allowed, I understand not every player takes them to take advantage of the less visible animations , which sucks for viewing matches, and some actually like them, but until Anet adjusts their sizing it’s cheesing it and bad for viewing.

the idea has a lot of merit, but the solution you’ve described will never be implemented.
they won’t sacrifice the only reward system they have for gameplay. i would have liked them to think of this as they were developing the game, but we’re too far in to backpedal now.
What if we have two or three a “tournament mode” options with the same silhouette with buttons/check boxes that organizers can ask players to use or people can decide to use by convention.
I mean when we’re talking about serious competition and e-sports I’m not sure that player customization is a respectable priority.
P.S. didn’t mean to draw attention away from Tumri’s thread on Normalized Character Models, I honestly hadn’t noticed it before my OP; in essence it’s the same topic

And then every r50-60+ player would be able to wear their hard-earned skins only in hotjoin?
Some people can’t stand some races too. I love my Asura Warrior because they got the best looking animations for this class. I’m fine playing Human Warrior too. If I was forced to play Charr/Norn on ANY class though, I’ld puke on my keyboard and instantly uninstall the game.
Terrible idea.
Here’s a tip: learn to tell classes by their animations.
If it’s using heavy armor and glows blue, it’s a Guardian.
If it’s using heavy armor and doesn’t glow, it’s a Warrior.
If it’s using medium armor and has animal-shaped bot around, it’s a Ranger.
If it using medium armor, makes pew-pew sounds and drops lots of circles on the ground it’s Engineer.
If it’s using medium armor, teleports and goes blurry when dodging, it’s a Thief.
If it’s using light armor, there’s 4 of him and a lot of pink glow around, it’s a Mesmer.
If it’s using light armor, has a bunch of zombies around/his attacks looks like he’s throwing goo around, it’s a Necromancer
If it’s using light armor, and throws flames/lightning around, it’s an Elementalist.
It’s really not so hard, try it.

My idea was meant to apply to serious tournament play, i.e. e-Sports aspect of things; two threads down GW2 PvP is being described as a “visual cluster****” and I completely agree. For a number of reasons (that I’m sure you can think of on your own… probably) that’s not a good state of affairs.
Honestly, if an idea benefits the quality and future of the game and the entire community (and it would – see hero models in LoL, Dota 2, TF2, etc. – there’s a reason you don’t have hundreds of models per hero/class), I think you puking and leaving the game will be something… we’ll just have to try and live with, I guess?

How can you say this would benefit the “entire community” then discount his view of hte idea?
He is part of the “community” you say to be representing.
Every major moba has DOZENS of champions, with most of them also having couple diffirent skins. GW2 has 8! classes, and no matter which race is used, particle effects on their animations are EXACTLY the same. It’s really not that hard to learn them and what skills they’re paired with. You don’t need to see ‘azura / female / Devout armor / medium sized body’ to realize this charging guy is Ele doing Burning Speed, you just need to see a trail of fire behind him. It could be attached to Asura, Norn, Ettin, a Coca-Cola truck, whatever, you can still say it’s Ele doing Burning Speed, because it’s unique animation.
TF2, since you mention it so much, it’s exactly the same. I don’t need to see a guy in white coat to know there’s a Medic around, I just need to see a trail of light following someone. If I hear a rocket launcher, I know there’s a soldier around, I don’t need to see a guy with a helmet covering half of his face to realize this, I’m already prepared for him being there.
The reason it’s described as “visual cluster****” has NOTHING to do with character models, but with the tons upon tons of particle effects flying all around (worst offender here being mesmer) and it’s already being worked on. THIS will indeed benefit ‘quality and future of the game and the entire community’.
Here’s idea: let the devs finish something they already have started, and if that doesn’t help, then we can start thinking of radical solutions.

Agreed on class effects making it easy overall to pick them out. And yes particle effects need to be toned down, but that’s only half of the issue. Watch tiny asura standing in the particle effects then watch other races. Other races to put it simply stand above it, and the size of their weapons makes the aoe ground effects a lot less likely to block view. With tiny asuras though their waist deep, right in the middle of the ground effects, and their kitten is hard to see even without the particle effects there. They’re the problem and most pvp teams run mostly that.
I don’t think asura should be taken away from pvp, it’s not their animations that’s the problem it’s their size and the size of their weapon, they just need to be bigger overall by about 33%, have their minimum height not be as low, as a percentage of their medium height, as other races and have their weapons be bigger in comparison to their body (make their weapons about 50% larger they then are now, after making them 33% larger. Char should have their lowest height lowered by about another 20% and Norn maximun height needs to be toned down by about 10% while their minimum height lowered by about 10% as well. Those adjustments would bring things close enough where while not equal they also wouldn’t be a significant issue.

Good point.
I assume reworking particle effects will also prevent Asuras from being covered by ground targeted skills. I’ld still wait to see how that turns out. Then we can actually give devs some meaningful feedback on the matter, like “Ok, particle effects are fine now, but we still could use toggle option to make all asuras display at max size”, “Nope, still to much particles.” or “Everything’s good”.

While the champions in MOBAs have different skins, they have the same size, silhouette and movement animations. As things currently stand in GW2 you can have almost anything – two mechanically identical chars running at you from the distance, one of which is a huge pink norn and the other a minuscule azura in armor of a color you’ve never seen before, wearing a plush backpack. That may not bother high level players, as they’ve spent a thousand hours looking at the GUI, but as a viewer on 720p it doesn’t help me one bit, especially if there aren’t clones (etc.) to identify the mesmer or the mentioned burning trail to help me spot the ele.
It’s a basic rule of human-computer interaction – information that’s important should be as visible as possible. Basically, what we’re discussing is, at least in the context of PvP, bad design.
Having some standard for tournament play / broadcast matches is one of many measures that could contribute to making the game easier to watch, commentate and take seriously, all of which are important to potentially make GW2 PvP (in some form) a mainstay on the e-sports scene, which in turn (if the business case is right) can result in NCSoft / ANet allocating additional resources to it.
Now, Harrier may not like all of these measures, but I’m pretty sure if that happens the results would benefit him directly.

Oh, I do, believe me, I’m still exclusively a PvE player, if anything I’d like to see the transition to PvP incentivized and, to be honest, I am not a particularly big optimist when it comes to the whole e-sports thing. There is a subset of the community, however, that actively tries to push for e-sports and I’m just trying to offer ideas as a spectator. This being the sPvP forum, I expected people to be more open to the notion, frankly.
