Losing Streak
I had such a losing streak as well (in fact, you could still find my picture in forums).
What I learned from it, is that, if you see another thief or mesmer in your group, you should switch to something more tanky. The moment I started doing that, my groups started to feel more well balanced.
I understand that you probably want to score some wins as a mesmer, but sometimes getting a win on something else, may bring a luck back to you.
Unranked has no matchmaking
http://www.twitch.tv/sindrenerr
And in unranked people can go full premade team…..What did expect op ?
Unranked has no matchmaking
This isn’t exactly true, unranked does have matchmaking but its based on old algorithm, so given players played enough matches they’ll still get 50/50 match up based on total team MMR. Ofc season 4 is criticized a lot for that as well.

Here is some actual team chat from my most recent match. I was attempting to help organize, pre match. The “omfg..” was me, after my team fell like dominoes and I was the last one up. ( I’d have explained “home” but the match started. )
I admit being somewhat frustrated at that point. The final score 503-42. There was no further team chatter.
This kind of game saps enthusiasm.

Unranked is just a place to test builds man. There is nothing competitive about it.
Go play some ranked.
It still baffles me Ithilwen how you have such a terrible win rate with the number of games you have played. Like do you just refuse to learn why you lose? And keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and just never getting better at the game?
I’ve seen your play in game, it’s not that great. You spend way to much time making posts on the forums about how stuff is OP instead of thinking “Hmm how can I beat this”? I know you play some weird Mesmer build because you think the meta is lame, but when you lose this many games can you really tell yourself with confidence that your build is working?
Like legit if you cant figure it out on your own I will duel you repeatedly and dissect your gameplay/build. Because clearly whatever you are trying is not working lol.

Unranked is a joke lol y do people try and play competitive in that with no matchmaking, joke players, joke builds etc. I only go there for daily and farming achievements, there is no competition at all just a joke all around.

I was one of the lucky people to have been trash talked by OP during unranked. But OP lost that match, and to think I may have contributed to that screenshot is glorious.

I freely admit that during loss streaks, I’m a rotten sport.
Still, I haven’t asked a fellow player to commit suicide. Others have encouraged me to kill myself rather than be on there team. I refuse to feel bad about giving back as good as I get. Turnabout’s fair play and all that.
I’ve never claimed to be a great player. My win rate is currently slightly above 50% in Ranked and I’ve improved greatly since last season. This is despite choosing to play a core build for aesthetics’ sake.

Its ok. You know I love you.
And it continues.. win rate now well below 10%.
A sincere question to ANET. Have you marked my account to be punished for some reason?
The point of this and my original post is simple; People need to succeed. If they don’t, they leave.
It’s simple really, 3 seasons of deliberately skewed matches has alienated too many. The matches don’t seem to be leveling out either.
Ithilwen.1529 i feel your pain!!!
If u check my older posts u will see that i mention that before .
That time i compared the results of my 4 accounts that i have .
Every day 2-3 of my accounts marked as doomed and every game u play is a disaster . The one that survive goes from decent to very very good. All accounts play the same class and the same build.
I don’t care what the others say here in forum … I care only from what is happening to me and others as i read .
Anyways i log only for daily these days and this not all the time. I just wait for the update to happen .
The same time i am looking for another game to play but till now nothing for my standards.
You know…you actually get better by playing every class in the game. You naturally react to animations and just perform better all round. Then you can carry your team.
That’s probably true, but I don’t dare go pvp with a class I don’t know. I take enough flack ( and losing streaks ) as it is. On a warrior, I’d be pure free kill.
Yes, I have at least one 80 in every class and I can play most of them well enough to fake my way through PvE. PvP is another matter.
I’m Mesmer focused. It’s just what appeals.
If all you are willing to play is Mesmer, which is a class you clearly are not very good at, you are going to continue the losses. Perhaps it’s time to admit that your nonstandard vanilla class Mesmer build is not going to cut and either re-roll the Mesmer or play a face roll class like DH. It is unranked also, so just deal. My win rate in unranked is over 65% and close to 60% in ranked on my main account and 2 free accounts I have. I am unsure how you can be getting such horrible matches. The one standard in that equation is you.
Congratulations, I guess. My point remains valid. I am hardly the only one who is having this type of experience, though perhaps the loudest.
I contend that is the major cause of the lack of population. For the rest… when you approach me with an attitude like that, I’ll blithely ignore you.

So you suggest I play classes I’m unfamiliar with and don’t like instead? That isn’t logical.
well maybe unranked is full of idiots
alright everywhere is full of idiots but unranked is practically their den

I don’t think it’s illogical, it sounds counter intuitive, but you know that phrase know your enemy? You learn heaps.

Yes. I thought thief was my class until I played ele.
I like Ele too. Tempest is hard to play at lower ranks except as a point holder. Many players will actually run out or your aoe buffs.

I think at low skill levels you should stay out of the thick of a fight until all the traps and cooldowns go off, then air attunement in for major profit.

I’m in mid-silver and carrying. I wouldn’t dismiss the role of point holding. It’s like, the most important role. Especially in silver, where people will stay fighting on a point you own even if you are bunking the crap out of them XD
So you suggest I play classes I’m unfamiliar with and don’t like instead? That isn’t logical.
yes
but it doesnt mean you have to jump into ranked games right away with those classes
Just practice every class (at least the current Meta Build) to get an overall feeling for that class and how to counter it and its current Meta Build the best
So you know exactly what animation does what to you/for your enemy when you see it in an important match later (that you can then play on Mesmer ofc but you will have much more knowledge about your enemies!)

The more you post in this forum the more I think you’re a clever troll.
Playing unranked apparently on a core build as mesmer solo q and you don’t play any other classes lol yeah I would have a terrible w/l ratio as well.
I’m maybe barely an average pvp player. The past 12mths I’ve worked my butt off trying to learn and improve. The thing that has helped me the most is playing other classes in pvp besides my main.
Before I take any class into pvp, I go out into pve with as close to a pvp build setup as I can. I’ll go up against Champs solo, simply I can see what CC works best. I spend hours figuring out what combos work best in what circumstances. Lots of experiements, trial & error. Then I go into Unranked to get rekt and then figure out why.
Now I main a Ranger and can run a decent Mesmer or Necro.
I can play a Thief, Rev or Warrior; but certainly not well enough for ranked. But I know them well enough to know what to look for when fighting.
For as long as I’ve been playing pvp, I have seen the OP complaining. I would hate to be as crass to say “l2p” or “git gud”. But after all this time, I would think the solution is obvious. Put less effort into forum posts and more effort into actually learning the game mode you choose to play.

FYI. I have a 50% w/l ratio in ranked this season, my best by a wide margin. I have worked my kitten off just as you have. Perhaps it’s time to stop blaming the player and fix the system?
I’ve invited you, several times, to come into hotjoin to practice. You ignore the messages. The state of the population right now is lacking talent. You can play virtually any build and win. It isn’t the build, it isn’t Anet, and it isn’t JUST your teammates. It is a problem between the chair and the keyboard.

What system needs to be fixed and what changes are needed? All your posts seem to be about unranked but…….welll…….it’s unranked (during an active PvP season at that) so I don’t really get your complaint.
@Ithilwen I am not unsympathetic to your frustration. You say the system needs to change? I don’t disagree, but…. It is the same system that I and every other pvp player work within. We all have a whinge from time to time. But I have never seen so many “complaint” posts from the one person about the same thing…“I can’t win”.
You say you have 50% winrate in Ranked, yet you are complaining about losses in Unranked.
If as you say, you have tried without success to make the desired amount of improvement and the system is truly as broken as you believe, maybe you should simply stop playing. At the very least stop plagerising your own complaint threads.

Why population is low and matchmaking is hurting? Why I’m a rotten sport and feel like a real jerk when I log out after a night? Why PvE players take one look and run?
Here’s your answer. No one is a good sport with a 10% win rate. I’m a self – aware masochist and I keep trying. Still, I am asking myself why.
… When i get a losing streak, I SWITCH CLASSES. I think a lot of people have told you that multi-classing will give you valuable insight into how the other classes fight. Please tell me you aren’t stuck on Mesmer because of your forum signature. Look me up in-game and I’ll show you how to win.
@OP if you suck (which hopefully is the case) then i got good news for you. You can easily improve your win ratio with one simple trick:
accept you suck. Simple as that. Once done with that it’ll get way better, since rather then tryharding to prove something you’ll focus on map awareness and taking objectives. If you can’t fight, then be a good roamer and a pest in general.
When i play my condi ranger in ranked, i rarely go mid or generally into big brawls. Instead i cap/decap lone points, set traps in choke points and drop in for quick kill when the big fight is already underway and some of enemy big skills got burned. Go in, down them, stomp them (if not under heavy fire), go out.
There is a LOT to be gained by just being in the right place at the right time, even if you fight like you were wasted.
one thing being horrible player, you can only improve from there a positive way of thinking

ATTENTION MODS This forum post has been altered by someone who is not me. I will change my pw today.
My original purpose was not so much to complain, it’s unranked.. It was to point out that losing streaks discourage players.

What do you suggest instead? That ANet artificially end losing streaks?

What do you suggest instead? That ANet artificially end losing streaks?
Theoretically, the rating system will cause you to sink until the skill level of the other players is so bad that you are the best of 10 and you carry a win. If you don’t understand strategies that help the team, you shouldn’t expect to win.
So you suggest I play classes I’m unfamiliar with and don’t like instead? That isn’t logical.
Yes, we do. Get more familiar with those classes, and their abilities by playing them. And, if you use a meta build, you can learn the strengths and weaknesses you expect to go against.
To repeat; I have a 50% win rate on the season in ranked. I’m hardly an incompetent player.
While I appreciate the advice, my point was and is; Players are turned off by long losing streaks.
I suspect that the deliberately un balanced matchmaking chased a lot of people away. I personally experienced 68 straight losses at one point. Another player reported 100.
The lack of population is now forcing matches between very different stratum of players. That essentially repeats the issue of s2-s3.
By implication; ANET needs to be very careful to present even matches and even classes. Past balance decisions have left classes either too weak or too strong. In some cases, they remained so for years.
What do you suggest instead? That ANet artificially end losing streaks?
Truthfully? Yes. An ideal rating system would make games easier after a loss and harder after a win.
Since that doesn’t seem to be achievable. ANET would do well to start awarding gimme games after say.. 5 losses.
Yes, yes I know … that’s not competitive etc etc. Consider this though; The ultra competitive system of S2-S3 probably seriously reduced PvP population.
After nearly a year of trying the ultra competitive approach, it clearly hasn’t worked. The rational choice is to try something significantly different.

Your 50% win ratio in Ranked doesn’t really mean much if you’re playing in bronze. Players may be turned off by losing streaks, but Anet can’t fix that for you. You have to improve. I mean, you’re playing in unranked, during an active PvP season, with a non-meta core mesmer, with no interest in learning the mechanics of other professions, and yet you feel as though Anet is somehow responsible for your loss streak and that they need to fix it.
Oh and btw, your suggestion of Anet feeding you an easy win to compensate for your losses, did you think that one through? How is that fair to the other team that is getting stomped just so you can feel better?

Just wanna say, this right here, this mentality, this type of people, this is what the game is catering more and more too. Ranked PvP these days is just a slightly better Hotjoin with a reward system attached.
Eventually PvP is going to decay into a competition of who can kill PvE enemies the fastest (just reminded myself of Stronghold lol) with everyone getting plenty of loot at the end whether you win or lose.
I do not see any problem having a self 10% win rate, having a self 50% win rate or more is already a match manipulation. 50% win rate comes from five individual against other 50% win rate. If you seek infamy in spite the population issue, ranked is the way to go.
Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.

Isn’t that pretty much what ANET did is s2-s3? They more of less fed easy games to “high rated” players so they could win streak and fell like pros.
