Low Tier player pool
what professions are you playing ?
whats holding you back ?
most casual players should be able to reach ruby even if they play 3 ranked games per day.

I’m playing Druid and occasionally Mesmer.
I am mostly working on:
– Identifying best rotations for situations
- Identifying winnable and unwinnable fights.
- Awareness of where my team and enemy are on the map.
- Skill combos.
- Judgement calls between stomp and res.
There are other area’s for improvements but these are the ones that have the most impact on my play style.
I don’t mind being in Emerald. I’m just sick of being spawn camped.
I’m not a good player. I’m trying to improve and I am getting better but I am in Emerald and I deserve to be in Emerald. The problem is, most of the other people who deserve to be in Emerald seem to have quit.
My match making for the last week or so has put me with the same few people both consistently on my team and on the opposing team. 4-6 Matches in a row with the same 2-3 people on my team. Opposing the same core team that flogs us again and again. Solo queing as T1 Emerald i’m facing Solo Q Saphires.
There are a few problems with this:
1. There are good players who are getting stuck playing with people like me again and again as they only have 1-2 MMR matches in team line up they get stuck.
2. Playing unwinable matches constantly is demoralising and causes more players to leave making the player pool much smaller still. This means next season you have a smaller player pool to spread amongst the ranks and better players will be stuck in lower leagues.
Now please be clear this isn’t a “QQ Y NO BACKPACK” post, I don’t think I should be able to progress out of Emerald. But I do want fair match ups. This far into the season the imbalance in lower tiers should have been soughted out, but it hasn’t. I would just like to put this out here for Anet to see. Without a base you can’t build a pyramid and with out bad players to fill the lower ranks you can’t push all the better players up.
Yes i’ve tried playing at different times (similar results i’ve tried from 2pm PST -> 9AM PST).
Yes i’ve tried leaving it a few days and coming back.
Yes i’ve tried queing with friends, most are better then me (High Saphire – Ruby) and I don’t want to drag them down.
Yes i’ve tried partying people I worked well with, we then get matched against tougher 4-5 man premades. Because 2 man pre is the same as a 5 man pre.
Yes I know unranked is there.
Yes I know I need to learn to play and get better.
I hope Anet can figure out a better system for soughting players into tiers next season, but I’m not sure how many of us who deserve to be at the bottom will be back after this season.
T1 Emerald vs Sapphire? I don’t think that should be happening.

hmmm druid and mesmer.
perhaps you can try out reaper as well ?
reaper is not that hard to play.
well, for me, at least.
anyway, that is just 1 sapphire with 9 emeralds. probably a fresh sapphire.

Thank you for the advise.
My concern though is with the small player pool, while I agree they were probably very low sapphire I am getting the same people consistently in matches both opposed and in team. If the matching system can’t even get 10 Emeralds to fill a match then there is an issue.

And there goes the theory of the 15 pips maximum range for all the participants in a single match.
Anet what have you done?

That isn’t a true statement. I’m putting nearly full time work hours and I’m stuck in the first tier of Sapphire, where I have been for several days.
The match quality is getting worse, if anything. There’s no way in Grenth’s realm I’m going to get the pack this year… This is basically becoming a waste of time for me.
I strongly suspect that many feel the same way.
And there goes the theory of the 15 pips maximum range for all the participants in a single match.
Anet what have you done?
I had no pip in diamond and i had 2 legendary in my game. So yeah I duno what anet did.

You know what? I guess that they quietly and silently ninja-patched the algorithm, extending a lot the pip range (0 pip in diamond – legendary is minimum 35 pips lol) due to high diamond/legendary players not able to get a game even after 20-30 minutes of queue.
So now we have a stacking MM and huge pip range search. Wow. Just, wow, the active players must be so few atm to change something in such a drastic way.
Edit: do you remember the teams distribution? Were the legends one per team, or both in the same one?

that is just sad
It’s worse than sad. It means that matches will be even more unbalanced than they were. It also means that I have exactly 0 chance of winning the wings.. so the rest of the year is a waste of time for me. Why should I play? Why should anyone play, unless thye have pre -made ridden to diamond?

Please stop it. To get the wings, you just need to cross 10 division thresholds during all 4 seasons. That means that you only need to reach at the least twice Ruby and twice Sapphire, or three times Ruby and once Emerald.
You don’t need to hit diamond not even once in order to get the the backpack.
And btw PvP should be played just for the sake of it, not for some stupid skin, that would be the “plus”, not the main reason.
I have put in more than full time work hours playing this season and last. In that time, I’ve never made ruby. The matches haven’t even been close to fair. 500+ to double digit scores have been the norm all season. Basically I’ve been dying for the pleasure of others and it sucks.
The backpack is the prestige item, yes I want it. Yes, I’ve been locked out of it.
My point is illustrated by the fact that the pip range has apparently been expanded. The system failed. Not only are there too few players, they are also concentrated in black holes. Mine happens to be the first pip of emerald.
(edited by Ithilwen.1529)
Ok, now here it is: if you’ve put full time work hours for the whole duration of 2 months in the previous season and you didn’t reach ruby (especially playing mesmer, which in the last season was a complete joke in how it was OP and easy to play with the chronobunker spec), then you definitely don’t deserve the backpack.
I deserve it more than the kittens who pre-made and rode a win streak to the top with very little effort.

Anet what have you done?
Basically, they are dividing the queue by 6 divisions… (or in 15 pips range)
This is worse than giving MMR based SOLOQ andTEAMQ options.
For the OP, I am sorry but… the grinders already did grind to ruby. The good players are already ruby and up. Coming late at a season start put you in this situation.
Having a SKILL based RANKED system, would removed all those problems.
Please look at this post and comment with you problem in the grind based system:

Or the 20% top MMR player who simply EASY soloq to the TOP.

Unless I’m mistaken you do have to cross 4 divisions in the same season to get hymn of glory no (required for gift of the competitor)? That means reaching diamond if I’m not mistaken.

You’re mistaken.
The crossing of divisions can be done during any season, for example you just need to reach legendary div in just 2 seasons to complete the whole 10 div crossings. Or legend x2 in S1 and diamond in S2, etc.

Hum…
That is not what I’m understanding when I read:
“_League Elite_
Cross 4 league division thresholds during a PvP season.
Completing this achievement awards an item for Path of the Ascension IV: Hymn of Glory.
Prerequisite: League Champion"
The way I get it if someone can’t ever reach diamond he can kiss the backpack good bye.
It’s poorly worded, yes. But it was confirmed by Anet on reddit, partial achievements don’t reset, so if you reach say 2 divisions crossed on 4 of the Part IV one during this season, in the next you’ll only need to cross 2 more divisions to complete it.

Wow, this was indeed very poorly written if it was what they wanted to say. In that case there is hope for these people.

In addition, from reading some are under the impression that the backpack can only achieved in 2016. That is wrong. The achievement and backpack are permanent. In 2017 a new backpack will be introduced, but you can still work on the old one. You could technically play 10 seasons only getting to emerald and get the backpack.
To the OP. I’m sorry for your situation. I wish there was a way out of it for you. On the plus side, maybe those people you are consistently playing with can begin to talk to each other and help each other.
You can try teaming up if you really want to. Solo queing is possible, and to be honest you still have almost two months to get it. All I can suggest is to keep trying. You can’t lose a tier in emerald so you will EVENTUALLY get out of it.
I’m not a good player. I’m trying to improve and I am getting better but I am in Emerald and I deserve to be in Emerald. The problem is, most of the other people who deserve to be in Emerald seem to have quit.

The guy’s main topic is the lack of MMR balance and depletion of population due to bad morale of the ladder, stop pretending this problem doesn’t exist.
I don’t see low population, except during school, and work hours. As for MMR balance again I don’t see it. On two occassion I gotten to Ruby, one account doesn’t even have HOT installed to it. So no MMR balance doesn’t seem like a issue to me.
Well some of us do see MMR/MM inbalances in matches. When you have to explain to players to range from the point with their LB instead of getting off the cap to stomp some one there’s a MMR issue, when you have to tell people to res you there’s a MMR issue, when you have to tell people to “You should have either res’d me, stomped, or focused the down’” there’s a MMR issue, when you have to tell people to stop going mid one at a time there’s an MMR issue, when you have to tell people to leave because it only takes one person to cap there’s an MMR issue, when you have to explain to people they’re doing something wrong because four of them are chasing one person around the map and have zero points capped there’s an MMR issue, when you know you have to carry your team to stand a chance at winning you know there’s an MMR issue.
If you’ve never experienced any of the above you are one of the lucky ones fortunate to fall through the cracks.

Oh the problem is real. No question about it. The pool of players within your MMR and pip range can often be quite limited and why you are continuously put over and over with the same ppl so often day after day.
I don’t see low population, except during school, and work hours. As for MMR balance again I don’t see it. On two occassion I gotten to Ruby, one account doesn’t even have HOT installed to it. So no MMR balance doesn’t seem like a issue to me.
well bully for you – you must be one of the lucky ones!
trust me MMR is an issue to lots !
Thank you all for your input, but just to clarify the issue here is small player pool, it’s not about the wings or progressing through the tiers.
My situation is i’m playing the same game on repeat, and yes while there are benefits to getting the same players again and again, that benefit also goes to the other team who are consistently winning with margins greater then 350 points. This seems to be because the match finding is having to stretch further to find matches. I’m being matched against players who are IMO out of my reasonable PIP range.
I feel this is because at the start of the season, the players who should be in this tier with me got thrashed so badly they no longer find PvP fun and left the game mode.
I am not saying we should revert to a grind based Tier system, that had it’s own flaws. I’m saying there has to be an alternative then giving people endless losing streaks at the start of the season. This post is here to give Anet a view of the bottom end of the tournament. The theory that it would even itself out has failed.
I would love to see more casual / below average players return to the game mode and play with / against them. Unfortunately I feel they may have been completely turned off the game mode.
Well. Anet killed their own game by making sure to whip and punish casuals. No wonders the population is so low. Soon enough, the only people left playing the same old boring meta picks are going to be the one paid to play in ESL.
So, is it even a game once this happens?
Casual players can still play, in unranked. Probably where they all went. Or Hotjoin.
Playerpool in my piprange has gotten so small, that I have to wait for two people to leave their match and queue up again.
End of Ruby, beginning of Diamond.
In addition to the small player pool, the “pro” players are playing on alts to get matches. This means they stomp there way through the divisions again. So, they compound the problems that got them slow matches to begin with.
This game wasn’t built to be esports, it wasn’t advertised or promoted as esports and the audience doesn’t want esports. I hope anet realizes this in time.

This is happening? That’s just plain unsportsmanlike.
Might explain a little what I experienced today. I started super late but decided to give it a shot. First 3 matches were decent, 2 wins and a loss. Today I hit an 11 losing streak before winning one. Expletive.
I’m obviously a casual PvPer but I can have some fun in unranked and get roughly a 50/50 win/loss ratio. This is just demoralizing.

Yep! I’m going back to unranked for my PvP. Sorry guys but the ranked pool just lost another potential player.

I have experienced this too. Last night I had 4 matches in a row against a player who was devastating us, easily winning 3v1’s, holding his own in 4 v 1’s. His response was " Sorry got bored in Legend". As a one off it’s fine but repeating the same match 3 more times was… painful.

Not with this matchmaking they can’t.

This would explain why there are still a lot of blowouts. Queue times in lower levels are now 4.5 minutes, they have essentially doubled in the last week. The game at lower levels is getting unsustainable.

i can believe that, guess there are more people like me that have just walked away. got to Emerald t3, been there since just 3 days after the start of the season 2. only winning 1 in every 10 games, fighting builds that I know I can’t beat because of how unbalanced everything is, I just said, F it, and stopped. Anets just shooting themselves in the feet, they want people to play it so there whole matchmaking works, with short queue times, but they forget that if it’s not fun, people won’t play. Balance kitten, and maybe, more people will come back and play.

I’m new to pvp in gw2, started unranked recently in order to collect armor skins and I’m barely half way thru my first reward track. That being said resing someone is not a MMR issue, it’s an issue with common sense or lack thereof. I do however experience first hand the problems of matchmaking pretty much every night I play. Matches are rarely close, mosty they are extremely one-sided which is a clear sign of a match making problem. You can tell right away how things are gonna go when 3 or 4 of the enemy team condi and cc bomb you in the first second you meet. People of different skill level have no place playing together regardless if its ranked or unranked.
I don’t really know if this can be improved, folks have been trying to measure other folks with numbers for a long time but it just doesnt work out that well. There are things no formula can calcualte
