Low R20 Entry to Ranked May be Bad News
Disagree. I have been having a very good exp so far since the lv req. A noob rank20 would still at the very least know his basic class mechanic and overall combat flow. I’m sick of seeing completely new players who barely know how to move around in ranked. It’s infuriating and frustrating.
Unranked, on the other hand, got completely kitten’d up by hotjoin immigrants.
I understand where OP is coming from. It’s good that there’s now a minimum but the “reminder” that hey, you can now queue ranked coz you’ve graduated to r20 could be bad if matchmaking doesn’t work.

This is why we need a mentor-system to help new players understand the pvp mechanics a lot faster. GW2 pvp requires a lot of knowledge about other classes and rotations to be succesfull. Heck even some veterans who play since release dont know everything.
If this mentor-system would be implemented nicely matchmaking would automaticly get a lot better and queuetimes faster because new players have a actual chance of getting into higher tiers of pvp faster.
Otherwise most of them will be put off by the amount of effort required to get good by themselfes. If this happens matchmaking and queuetimes will probably be even worse than now.
Matchmaking only works as intended when it has a big enough population. So ye, let the new people join up and get better so that the population grows.

I have noticed an influx of clueless players in ranked. I’m all for f2p and I think it’s fantastic, but more effort needs to be put in to explain basic mechanics to new players. I’m sick of games recently where like on Legacy of Foefire we’re winning 350-100 only for the other team to kill our lord then storm ahead because my team has no idea what the lord is!
Make it rank 40 to do ranked not 20!
It’s probably best if they achieve an x amount of wins (i.e.150-300 unranked wins, etc) before ranked entry.
I see no huge game changing downsides going this route. Upside include better ranked filtering = fewer mismatched teams = better pvp experience.
Another upside is when the newer player is motivated enough to pursue 150 or so wins, they wouldn’t take ranked matches for granted. They would also bring a higher caliber gameplay that will be appreciated by ranked pvpers, unlike the gameplay from low minimum requirements.
There is no way a new pvper could master a build within his class plus understand map rotations in 20 rank levels.
I think it’s much healthier for the pvp community as a whole if ranked entry is changed to x amount of unranked wins.
^ That works too in case matchmaking fails. Way better than r20 minimum. At least you know your teammates have been around long enough to understand the basics.

I agree, rank 20 is too low imo. But at least it will stop people from farming dailies in ranked on classes they can barely play. Rank 40 sounds about right to me.
You can’t keep pushing the rank requirement upwards. The truth is a bad player will always be a bad player, at some point you need to draw a line.
REquiring a rank 20 is good enough, increasing simply makes it a grind that you have to cover come. There are a lot of bad rank 80 players. This system is design to minimize or at least give someone a good MMR before they head into rank.
You can still be competitive in unranked. Pushing the requirement makes ranked play seem more valuable and not to be taken lightly. Pushing the requirement will make it less miserable for competitive solo queuers in ranked.
Repetition is reputation. Awareness to map rotations become second nature the more they grind.
I agree there are lots of bad r80 players. I’m skeptic towards r80s and the entire premise of rank in general because zerging and team swapping in hotjoin can get one to r80.

Seeing as you still get rank points from losing, just because someone is rank 20, or 40 or 80 doesn’t mean they’re great. There are gonna be noob players no matter what the rank is set to, and if you make the rank prerequisite high enough, people will just either not bother, or farm their way to it instead, creating either longer queue times or teammates that have even less idea what they should be doing.
Getting to rank 40 requires 328 win in unranked or 983 wins in custom. That seems a little excessive, especially since new players likely won’t be winning games consistently, so you could be looking at almost 700 unranked games, just to play ranked.
Best thing you can do is help teach these people when they show up on your team. Help them understand what they should be doing and help them get better, instead of trying to set up barriers to keep them as far away from you as possible.

Those F2P players would have played 60+ games in the past 2 days in order to join up on ranked.
I’d say it’s just the regular low MMR newbies.

You can only help those that seek help. Practicing incorrectly regardless of time spent will always yield inferior results.
It’s amazing how even some of the newest players have already developed “flawed” expertise about the game and if you try to teach, they get hostile and call you noob.
I am not in favor of R20 for one key item. It just hides the fact that ANET has a broken matchmaking system. The PvP rank actually should have nothing to do with matchmaking.
Instead, it should be about ACTUAL game results. When a new player joins, they should be matched with others who either are new, or who have the lowest MMR ratings.
Also shows why solo queue needs to be added since that system will work really well there.

Your argument only works because you assume there are a lot of player playing PvP. matchmaking doesn’t not create players, it only groups up players based on the # of players available at a very specific moment in time.
Maybe matchmaking is broken, but that is something you cannot possibly know unless there are a lot of players PvPing and quite frankly that is not the case.
Even if they adjusted the MMR to be lower for brand new players, they would still be group up with higher MMR players IF there are few low MMR players.
