MMO pvp veteran with questions
1. Anvil Rock for North America and Desolation for EU
2. Thief… But engineers are also amazing in everything (wink wink)
3. As soon as you finish the tutorial or if you have a friend already in a pvp lobby, level 1.
4. Rank means absolutely nothing.
5. FIND A TEAM FIND A TEAM FIND A TEAM FIND A TEAM! The game is so much more enjoyable if you can communicate with friends while you play! Not only will you enjoy the game more, but you’ll learn and get better quicker. Also ask top tier players for tips, most will help and share their builds or strategies with you.
If you need any help ingame or have questions, feel free to send me a message here or ingame. My name ingame is Vöz.
Cheers and welcome to the game!

Welcome!
1. Deso EU
2. Thief
3. Pretty much immediately. Click on the swords top left and choose go to the mists.
4. No leveling in PvP
5. Obviously lots but starting with the very basics, get runes and sigils for your weapons/armor. Spend your trait points.
Thank you both with the support and information. I think I will start with a Theif and see what i think of the playstyle and damage output. I’m from Ohio in the US, so I’ll probably end up dropping into anvil rock for the server. I’m kinda sad I can’t level in PvP, but no worries (: If either of you are on anvil rock, feel free to get ahold of me! I’ll post my character later. one last question…
6. Does PvPing at a low level have any benefits to my toon? Or should I grind up to max level quick as possibly and jump into PvP after?
pvp & pve are two different worlds.
if you want to leveling and do some pvp, you play pve and go for wvwvw (so it is pvp gear based)
heart of the mists is where the PvP is. you are max level and all items and skills are unlocked.
i would suggest you elementalist. or warrior. but people think warrior is UP so elementalist. btw you can play every class, so try , test, have fun
gl
I use my warrior for sPvP. She does really well.
She’s a signet build GS/Rifle with lots of nommy crits
Though it all depends on your play style and preferences and what you really get an eye for.
Honestly level your character to 80 first before going into spvp. It’ll make it easier for you since you’ll know what each skill does and how it works k. The beat down your going to get in the mists won’t be half as bad if you do it that way.
I play a thief its all I’ve played since launch. If I knew what I know now and I could restart I’d probably either go engineer or elementalist

If I might ask… Why on earth?

In what world? Certainly not Tyria.
Don’t get my wrong, I LOVE my Engineer. It will always be my best and favorite class.
But saying you regret having a Thief and would rather switch to an Engi with the game in its current state is just ludicrous. o_o
Sounds crazy but no matter how good you are as a thief you just don’t get respect.
This is a game right? Games are meant to be fun… Right? I have fun on my engineer with the CC and overall baddassery. It certainly isn’t the strongest, but I’d love to see anyone who can beat me in a 1vs1 or kill me on a node! Engineers are rejected simply because they are difficult to play well. We get no love QQ

Okay, okay, I can understand this. When I play on my Thief or Mesmer, people will QQ at me sometimes, but never give me kudos. At LEAST once a play-period on my Engi I’ll get someone commending me on a job well done. It does feel a bit more fulfilling.
I’ve also been pretty much dead-set on playing Engineer since…. March. So I always will.

Or you can just watch a few videos/streams of your selected profession and practice in hot join until you get it. I’ve done it on a few characters and haven’t had issue. If OP is decent at PvP he/she will be fine.

+1. People pick up a lot of bad habits in PvE anyway—have you seen a PvE warrior try to PvP? It hurts to watch.
Edit: oh yeah, and +1 to the people saying that if you succeed as an engineer, you’ll turn heads.
First of all, I know this thread may be old but I am still going to reply because it feels good to help people by giving them my input.
Now I’m gonna reject to some people who say ranks are worthless. Unless you have time to put in to farm black lion chest and keys to get the scraps and then get a skin, ranks help. Ranks determin what animal you are( rabbit, deer, dolyak, etc ) and determines what kinds of skins you can get from vendors. By skins I just mean better looking pvp gear. All pvp gear have the same stats. But stats such as power would come from and amulet. If you like the pvp gear you start off with, that’s fine. But if you don’t, look forward to ranking up because you can get some pretty cool gear at ranks like bear or tiger.
Here are some other ways to get skins (by skins I mean actual skins you can put on your PvE gear. But Arena Net was nice and made an option to turn those skins into pvp gear.)
Your achievement chests are of course a good way to get skins to make into pvp gear.
Black lion tickets as I told you before.
Gem store items are another cool way.
And how could we forget the SUPER ADVENTURE BOX! (If you have the tokens of course.)
And of course, the trading post.
I hoped this helped every newbie out there and I’ll see you all, at the matches.
Have a great day
(P.S. If you have anymore questions, mail me in game. My character name is Leroxes)
Get a load of all these people from 10 months ago laughing at the concept of playing engineer instead of thief.
Master race class.
really bad engineer

You can try Engineer but don’t complain about not having any easy escape tools and most classes getting a guaranteed stomp on you, especially Thieves with perma-blind field, any class/build with invis/stability/block/blind, etc :P
Also I would recommend staying away from Elementalist because in their current state you will spend most of your time hitting your head against your keyboard at how frustrating it is to play that class and being half as effective as any other class at any specific role.
