MMR System?
Mostly just that it produces godawful matches more often than not if you aren’t high-mmr.

kitten .
The real question is. Is there any MMR or have we been lied to the whole time while the matches are randomly created by bunnies walking on keyboards and sorting people in teams?
In theory MMR works quite well but can be difficult to implement in a team setting, a lot things can throw off the system. Although, even if the MMR system is working great there may be problems during the matchmaking itself depending on the players queued.

Too bad we absolutely have to have a team system, huh?
The players queued is the ENTIRE problem, though, IMHO. You should have an option as to how long you are okay to wait for a match. Because in order of things that make me hate this mode:
1. Long streak of losses when I have to wait longer than average
2. Long streak of losses when I have to wait average
3. Long streak of losses when I barely have to wait
4. Waiting over 10 minutes for a queue and getting matches that are competitive
At the very least, make it so I have an OPTION to wait until the system has found something that I have a chance in. Put a button that says “match me now” in, and if people want to hit that button, stick them with each other and leave me out. So sick of coming on to have a few matches and relax and just finding that I"m on team after team of horrible mismatches in terms of skill and profession. SO FREAKING SICK OF THAT.

This game currently doesn’t have a true MMR system and it’s easy to implement in a team setting. It’s all based on personal achievements wins/losses. Not only how many games you win.
The fact that pvp is only currently good if you no life is a kitten ed travesty :-/

Huh? It does have a true MMR system: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/PvP_Matchmaking_Algorithm
It uses the glicko2 algorithm which was developed for chess and while it’s technically easy to implement making it accurate for an individual in a team based game is much more difficult.
Please tell me why we can’t view our actual MMR rating then? Why don’t we lose points based on losses in ladder? A true mmr system would have those functions/features ;-/ .. Saying they have something working behind the scenes, then getting nothing but crappy match-ups 10 games in a row isn’t a real MMR system. Hell, I was up against top 10 people with only 4 matches played. How does that work if MMR exists? LOL .. What a joke
MMR can only work if they are enough players in queue, guild wars 2 does not have enough players stuff MMR is useless. Unless you can get 1000s of more players, MMR will never be better. Better yet, if you want to avoid relying on MMR just for a team.
There is nothing Arenanet can do about it except hope more players show up. The other thing people suggested is added a rank restriction, which doesn’t really work too well since the players the noobs will be playing against are also noobs so they learn nothing.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

I agree that we should be able to see our own MMR. We do lose points from losses in ladder but not nearly enough to make a difference. The MMR is a measure of your skill and is only one factor in how matches are made, the population queuing at the time has a huge effect on the matches you get and I have no idea what the starting MMR is for a new player. The Glicko2 system has an accuracy rating that hones in on the actual skill of a player as they play more games but the starting MMR could be higher than it should be.
I 100% disagree Kyban. If there was MMR, truly, then I wouldn’t have been matched up against a top 10 player recently. I barely have 20 games played since ladder reset. I had total scrubs on my team and I’m facing a top 10 player and his buddy. In theory, MMR would make it IMPOSSIBLE for me to even match vs anyone who is ranked. Regardless of how long I’m searching based on MMR ranking alone. This is why I feel there is no system and if they have code that goes around the MMR when you’ve searched for too long, then what’s the point? Not to mention comps and skill-level in each match are so slanted it’s disgusting.

Umm your first sentence makes 0 sense. MMR should work regardless. If nobody is on of your skill level or anywhere close, then you have a longer match wait. I get they want pvp to be quick match finds etc etc but they do so at the cost of enjoying pvp. I’m a decently good pvp player. If I could no life I’m sure I’d be top 100 easily but I work a lot. That fact seems to make it impossible for me to solo queue into decent matches. Not to mention how often 5 stacks are against me. I should NEVER face a 5 stack as a solo queue player ;-/

The problem is the system adjusts the MMR gap between the teams if the queue reaches a certain time, so if they were to fix “MMR” you basically would be waiting 10 minutes inbetween games because the issue is lack of players no the system.

Yes, in theory MMR would make it impossible to match up with a top 10 player. But what if the people queuing at the time was: 4 scrubs, 4 medium scrubs and 2 top players. Then the MMR will have no choice but to group you up with the top player because there is nothing left. A perfect example of beggars can never be choosers.
The reality is there either a terrible match or no match. Arenanet decided that for the majority, they will prefer a match vs no match. You however prefer no match vs a terrible match and you will have to make a choice either queue or don’t queue.

I think you’re still confusing leaderboard and MMR, MMR has not reset for a long time so you still have your previous MMR from before the new leaderboard. The match making could definitely use a lot of work but there’s nothing to indicate that the MMR system isn’t working as intended (there’s nothing to indicate it’s not failing either). More emphasis should be placed on the MMR in the match making process but if you have to wait days to get a match people won’t be happy about that either.

By top10 you mean top10 on the leaderboards or top10 as in esports?

What I’ve heard is that new players do not actually start on the bottom but somewhere in the middle. Which would match what I’ve experienced. On my other account, I had 0 games played, not even unranked/hotjoin and I got people who appear in tournies every week. This shows how flawed this is. And it wasn’t at odd hours, just normal prime time. So there’s something definitely wrong with matchmaking.
I agree 100% and I understand if they legit started you in the middle. However, that doesn’t mean you should be playing top ranked tourney players in your first few matches. It’s bad enough that people play nothing but cheese builds half the time that take 0 skill but at the same time you’re match-ups are atrocious when solo queue. :-(
Not to mention I’ve gone from being a 65%+ player to a sub 50% due to match-up BS. I normally can carry a team no problem or at least give us a fighting chance. With this “new system” .. There’s 0 chance at all 90% of the time.

I checked the wiki page and it says default is 1500 out of a range of 100-5000, not sure if this is accurate or what the actual spread of players is but it seems like an okay starting point.

I’m not sure honestly. Do you really believe that someone who had 0 games on their account should be matched with people that experienced they make teams and appear in tournies? I do not.

They should not, but this may not be due to MMR. It could be that they were the only available match at the time.

Well, as I stated it was at prime time. It’s still wrong, they can’t expect people being satisfied with matchmaking like this. It’s not just one exception, people keep getting new players and the games are just frustrating.

You seem to enjoy arguing against invisible opponents. Nobody here is disagreeing with you, we all agree it is wrong BUT that is how the system is. If there is nobody around MM will try to group up people in the most fairest way possible. THis can mean that both team gets someone with zero games.
