I’ve been studying how the matchmaking works:

It seems that when there are no good matchups available for most of the players currently queuing, the matcher turns to ignoring reality and engaging in “make-believe”.

It starts pretending that some people with a low skill actually have a higher skill than they do. It is called the “padding” variable. It pretends that a weak team is actually not weak, and then matches it with a waiting team of veterans.

This is what is allowing new players to be thrown up against veterans.

The alternative is for the matcher to say “No reasonable matches possible at this time”.

What if that is the truth? Ignoring it and throwing the newbs to the veterans does not solve the problem. It turns new and average players away from PvP.

It starts pretending that some people with a low skill actually have a higher skill than they do. It is called the “padding” variable. It pretends that a weak team is actually not weak, and then matches it with a waiting team of veterans.

Close, but it’s more likely to happen the other way around. We match players by the lower bound of their rating (i.e. rating – deviation), so it’s more often that it starts pretending veterans are weak.

This only kicks in if someone has been waiting in the queue for 4 minutes.

As long as it even’s the playing field I’m fine.
If it puts a team of veterans vs a team of newbs, unacceptable. Should be a mixed vs a mixed.

There are high costs in slaughtering and demoralizing the average player base.

telling players “you cant play right now because reasons” is the worst possible thing you can do for your game and always-online games have been moving away from doing that for years with lower and lower patch downtimes, less server maintenances, and in how content is doled out.

it is not an option to tell someone they cant play.

It is better than a 500-0 and the 5 players on the zero side get frustrated and stop playing pvp. That said, I agree that you want everyone to play, but not at the cost of completely uneven matchups

These 500-10 blowouts make both sides angry and really turn new players away from PvP. THAT is the worst thing you can do.

If there are not enough people available at their level, there is no match for them.

Can’t it just mix the good players with bad players so there are an even number of good players on each team? I assume this is what it already does.

If there is a team of 5 really good players then I think its fair that they have to wait a really long time for a match. They are choosing to play as a group and therefore should be willing to put up with a long match queue. If they don’t want to wait then they can play in a smaller groups.

Anet is trying to build up PvP and it won’t happen if 5 man organized groups are stomping newbs all the time.

So you face someone good, while you get destroyed and blame it on your “teammates being nubs” you might actually learn something that you can use to be better in the future. Hell, right click and pm one of those players, say “If I come in your ts can you show me some things to be a better player?” I I know I’d help, and I’m not even that nice.

I have noticed some better matches in the past day or so. Much fewer walkovers. Anet seems to be going in the right direction at least.

Personally, I think the players who cry about nubs are generally less skilled than they think.You’d think they could win 1 v 5 but are just gracefully giving others a chance, by what I hear in team chat.

I will comment that even one pair in teamspeak gives their team a large advantage over a pug team. Matchmaking should consider any partied people as a large advantage.

With respect to 500-0 game scores; The only place that happens is Courtyard. I think that whole map is a really bad idea and should be discarded. I vote against it without fail and would almost rather take a dishonor hit than deal with that setup.

i dont think you guys get it.

yes, of course, its a choice between 2 evils.

however, the only possible outcome of saying “you cant play right now” is a bad experience. if a match is made with 95% odds of one team winning, ~5% of the time you will have a positive experience. ~5% > 0%. so on average, its better to have bad matches than no matches. because at least something is happening, instead of your potential players going somewhere else just because you said they cant play.

The magnitude of the bad experience also matters.

Also, using averages is extremely bad practice when talking about edge cases (like the matchmaker not being able to find a good match).

Content in this game will always seem
to be faceroll at the high levels, because it
needs to be accessible to the casuals and bads.

Mixing might be better, but it’s still extremely frustrating. I’ve been in quite a few mixed matchups, with vets and newbs on both sides. And while it might not be blowouts, it’s not a fun experience either.

I hate mixing. I play this game to win (and to have fun) and I don’t appreciate it when I have people of a much lower skill level making silly mistakes. I don’t have the time to teach them often enough so I want to be paired with people who have a similar mechanical and rotational skill as myself. I don’t want to get put with top 10 players either because I want to have a balanced match, but I don’t want people with only 100 games.

If you cannot swim you can easily drown in a lake that is only 2 feet deep on average

I think the weaker team should at least be informed in some way that they are about to matched up with much stronger opponents. Sometimes its fun to play top players for the lols, other times people won’t want to throw themselves against a brick wall for 5 minutes.

Well, the ladder will reward you for trying and performing even against stacked teams.

I just hope it would tell you how much of an underdog your team is before the match starts. Tell you how many points your team needs to score to get +1 in your ladder rank.

Then you have a realistic goal. I would like that.
