What Ismael and Silv said. You want something? You pay for it. The game you play is basically a free version, you buy the game to get access to everything. Simple stuff really..

That would be a bait and switch.

They’re experience has been intentionally diminished and held hostage behind a pay wall.

I can’t believe I’m arguing this because it should just be common sense… but here we go.

Your experience was never diminished… everything you paid for 4 years ago is still there and you can still do it. You can still do pvp, wvw and pve without HOT. The only difference is that there is new content exclusive to the expansion pack.

When you buy a game you are entitled to the content you paid for. You can still access all that content without any paywall. Anet has no legal obligation for you to enjoy that content though. Just because the content Anet created may prevent you from ENJOYING that content without the expansion pack does not mean they locked the content you paid for behind a paywall. All your content is accessible just as it always was, you just no longer enjoy it as much as you used to.

Here is a good example, lets say you buy a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 because it is the fastest street legal car and you like to street race. The car is touted as the “fastest street legal car”. You win all your races. Next year a Bugatti Veyron 16.5 comes out that is faster and now you start losing. Does that mean Bugatti “bait and switched” you? No it doesn’t.

Not quite. Theyre selling you the license to race so to speak.

This would be paying a lump sum of money to enter a competition where you must pick from a fixed selection of cars of your choice to race, under the premise that this is all you will ever have to pay in order to be competitive in this tournament (anet by their own words said the elite specs are not meant to be an upgrade).
Next year they tell you that if you pay another fee equal to the first sum of money you paid, you may gain access to faster cars and if you do not you may still race but never win.

“You can either leave this room or I will shoot you, its your choice”.

What you fail to realize is that neither anet or your fictitious racing company have any obligation for you to be competitive in their games. While Anet strives for balance they have no legal obligation that says they can’t release new content which makes old players worse.

A bait and switch is marketing a false price for a service only to increase that price later. Anet never told you “we aren’t releasing new specs ever” nor did they promise vanilla specs would be even remotely competitive. Anet sold you a game for $60 of which all the content is still playable. They promised you game content for a price and gave you all of that content for the stipulated price. If you no longer enjoy the game because you die at it, it is not their problem.

Honestly if you don’t get it at this point I don’t know what to tell you. As they say, you can’t argue with stupid. That being said before you continue calling what Anet did a bait and switch, let me ask what law school you went to? For the record I go to Osgoode.

In other words you’re admitting what I’m describing, that being said yes I’m using the laymen definition of ‘’bait and switch" here. While it’s not illegal it’s intentional frowned up business techniques they’re using to sell the expansion.

They made the content that was previously sold obsolete. Or as a pvp player are you seriously trying to tell me that a pvp platform has any value, use or meaning to a competitive player if they cannot win?

For the record, they did promise the base specs would remain competitive. In their own words, the elite specs are not supposed to be an upgrade.

Just because you can log onto the game does not mean it is playable to a competitive pvp player of he cannot win. It’s always a gateway to a game going down the drain when it’s player’s irrationally defend the interests of the company rather than the players. The company’s profits =/= player’s enjoyment. Any competitive pvp player for one reason or the other who cannot buy the further expansions are forced to give up the game as a whole, the game that they bought has been given an expiry date.

Maybe it would make it easier to understand if anet released a mechanic such that, when you buy the expansion your stats are double that of those who only have the core game. Does that seem so innocent now?

It is true. Core mesmer is not viable compared to chrono. You can try but it is simply weaker and an uphill battle to make it effective.

Just buy the expansion. It’s 50% off right now until tomorrow, so it’s only $25.00.

But I want ANet to put more pay2win stuff too.

Sorry, but it’s borderline ridiculous trying to play PvP against people with elite specializations when I don’t have them myself.

Why is this even a thing?

It comes down to money. IMO Anet did a really good job of putting everyone on a level playing field when it came to pvp: we are all at max level, normalized stats, access to the same gear (amulets, runes, sigils). These were really well thought out in terms of getting new players into the game mode, versus having a barrier to entry of grinding levels/gear on top of the skill level disparity when you first start playing pvp (i.e. need to learn what other classes builds can do, recognize the animations, what to dodge, where to be and when, etc etc).

Along comes HoT and across the board every single HoT spec is stronger than the vanilla version. This is type of power creep that comes with a price tag attached is the definition of pay to win. Now, the reason you are paired against HoT specs is because the pvp population in this game could comfortably sit around your mom’s dinner table and not bump elbows with one another. A more interesting questions is: if the game had a larger pvp population would Anet still pair you up against HoT players? imo, I believe they would. You getting repeatedly dumped on by players that have purchased HoT just might make you made enough to drop some cash to ‘level the playing field’ and I believe that’s what Anet would bank on. Look at some of the responses you’ve already got in this thread…

I’m curious what the queue times would be for those that do not have the expansion…

Probably better. A lot of people stopped playing due to the expansion and a lot of newbies are turned away by the need to buy the expansion to be competitive. (you know…. we call it pay to win)

Anet has not interest in spending money of features that encourage you NOT to spend money.

If you haven’t bought HoT at this point, you are no longer their customer. You are either a former customer, or a trial user with the potential to become a customer.

They can’t simply make elite specs free in PvP only, as then there would be literally no incentive for that eSports community they keep foolishly trying to chase to pay them at all. Their entire eSports setup is a marketing tool, specifically designed to sell more copies of the game. Making it more competitive by spending less money simply undoes that entire business model.

This is a good cheezy mechanic of MMORPG.

But since sPVP is a MOBA type of games with “MMORPG builds” on, it’s one of his downfall.

It would be easier to make sPvP like a MOBA and do PVE/WvW like a MMORPG. Doing this would open options… and would bring more people of each game type to bring abundance of players.

But forget it, MMORPG QA testers got better idea of what MOBA is than dedicated pvp players. And so, the MMORPG mindset is “choking” the MOBA community out there.

1. You’re wrong on so many aspects. I was playing Guild Wars before you were born, and therefore have a lot of experience with builds and how to adapt them to fit the circumstances. I have tried every possible build I could think of, including those of other people, and only a few have worked well enough to kill an elite spec and then die shortly thereafter.

I am sorry, but in Gw2 sPvP players don’t have the “freedom” of build that Guild Wars had.

You are comparing the Rolls Royce of PVP to the LADA of PVP.
