Playing 5 games in a row, getting +4 or +5 for each one and getting lucky.
Losing 3 games in a row due to DC’ers dcing multiple times and not coming back, kittenty teammates (gold players on my team as a plat, poor matchmaking) and just general bs, -15 to -20 for each one.
Proposal: Make the system take into account your teammates. A platinum player shouldn’t be losing -17 when they have gold players on their team. The current system only takes into account you vs the other team, which makes no sense considering you’re on a team with 4 other players. It creates incredibly frustrating and counterproductive play. No idea why this wasn’t implemented in the first place.
My understanding (and I’m happy to be corrected) is that +/- is based on team avg mmr.
What is hurting the most currently is the too large mmr range of players on each team. I’ve played matches this season where the range has been t3 Gold to t1 Bronze.

I’m not entirely sure either, but it doesn’t seem like it. I’d love to have confirmation. Even if it already takes team average mmr, getting +5 for a win and -20 for a loss is still insane.
I agree, the range of players is also hurting the experience as well. It contributes to the “a few players ruin the game for the rest of the team” experience.
I am a mid gold player. Last match was all player in my team solo against 2 duos 1 solo. One opponent duo was #1 and #2 in europe. Well I don’t mind loosing such a match but it shows how the lack of players hurts the game. It is really a joke that ANET’s system lowers my MMR for such a match.

I am going to have to agree, if I get paired with a team that has a lower mmr than myself, and that team loses, I lose more points than them because I couldn’t carry the team. What’s the point in that?
This whole thing was a bad idea poorly implemented. It seems to me that, in order to bring PvErs into pvp and boost population, anet introduced gear rewards. Now, so that gear and rank are distinct progression system, we get a win/lose system as opposed to pips and a floor.
PvP is bad enough as in, coordinating with nobodies is bad enough as is, being 20% of a team is bad enough as is, to be ranked according to their combined efforts (or lack thereof). This decision only makes people salty, especially considering how awkward (or non-existent) matchmaking is. Nobody cared this much if they lost before, they do now because, in spite of the “skill” pr-line, the truth is that the final score says very little if anything about individual performance.
Like I said, this whole ordeal was a poorly implemented bad idea.
