I have a question. Does PvP rank have anything to do with matchmaking at all?

The reason why I ask is because I frequently see posts complaining about matchmaking with a screenshot of the scoreboard listing disparate PvP ranks.

I always assumed though, that matchmaking was done solely through some kind of hidden ranking system, similar to the leaderboard, and that PvP rank has absolutely no impact on matchmaking?

Which would make sense I think. PvP rank is an indicator of how long you played, not how good you are. The leaderboard or whatever ELO system Anet has is a better indicator of true “skill” when compared to PvP rank.

So does PvP rank have any impact on match making? Answers appreciated, thanks in advance.

Actually from my experience (1100 tourney games, about 1050 of them solo queued, rest with 1-2 friends) in about 90% of my games the team with the higher rank players won. sure in theory the pvp rank tells nothing about the skill, but it tells how experienced you are and usually you get better if you play more.
leaderbords are a bad indicator as long as there is no split between solo queue and premade. leaderbords only tell how good your team is and while it is still possible to stomp pugs as a premade even this is pointless.

I dont know what matchmaking system arenanet is using but in consideration of the unbalanced matchups in terms of rank i think ist more something like a win/loose ratio system counting someóne with 20 wins and 10 looses the same as someone with 200 wins and 100 looses, which would be beyond stupid.

Do you believe in RNG in tournaments? Do you believe that a rank 8 can get carried to high leaderboard percentile via other team has afk, disconnect, ragequitter. And his team carries him to that high percentile everytime? Until up to a point when you face premades, that’s when he starts dropping, and rank 8 isn’t enough games to solidly put him in a spot of where he should be at.

Rank isn’t everything, but you don’t know anyone in solo q, I’d rather have a safe team of people around my rank rather than chancing it with some rank 8 (which 70% of them are a liability to the team).

I was mostly considering players who learn fast vs players who never learn. From my experiences in LoL, I know players who’ve played 800+ games are are still incredibly bad. And I know players who’ve played 100+ games who grasped the game mechanics rather quickly and are very good players.

This is just my personal experience. That experience and “skill” doesn’t necessarily correlate, and was wondering if anyone knows how (if they do) Anet considers PvP ranks in their matchmaking.

I honestly don’t think rank SHOULD play a significant role in matchmaking.

That’s not to say the current matchmaking system is good; I just don’t think rank disparity in games is the real issue here.

It has no bearing on leaderboard but rarely do you see a team with ranks below 20 lose to a team with 40+
