Matchmaking seems good. A lot more enjoyable.
System still encourages players who hit the beginning of a new tier to throw matches in order to ride a win streak. This can make solo que a pain in the kitten . They need to make players able to lose division.

I have been soloQing since the season started, and most of the games are feeling winnable. No blowouts so far.
Lets give it a week or 2 and see how ppl feel about it.
So far so good for me…. like a million times better than past season..
I think that the division placing was key.

season 1 was good, season 2 was kitten, season 3. I think I’ll just throw in the towel now. also the games feeling more and more clunky. I click skills that don’t happen, or I stop moving after using one, or get stick for no reason. It all just adds up to torture. never mind the MMR. Screen shot of my last game. it was a close game, that is not my problem, it’s the 2 emerald in my game……. it’s just a sick tormented joke.

there you have it.. MMR is still FUBAR. wish they would start with a clean slate, season 2 just messed up all the stats.
nevermind the Q times -.- . All the crap match ups must be putting people off,
(edited by Silverstone.4539)
I don’t see much of a difference.. it’s still stacked heavily towards one team before the match even starts.. it’s just the same as last season.

Man your match ended 500-494 thats evidence of fair matchmaking… You just validated my point.
If u lost that match was prob because of a mistake from someone on your team or a better call from enemy team. But your match was definitely fair. Look at that score.
yeah the matchmaking is good for the most part, small issues here and there but vastly better than s2 and s1

Well, as I mentioned in OP, it might be a little early to conclude about it. Lets give it a week or 2 and see what direction it takes.

what s the problem with emerald in your game?it s not like they are legendary.
The game was close and balanced.
it was a fair game, I’m not talking about that. it’s the emerald in the game. I’m not even t1. wasn’t it meant to be up to 3 tiers above and below your tier?
mind you they change to rules so much now without telling people, who knows…
the match making is 50/50, I’ve played 12 games won 6. and that’s a win one lose on merry go round. I’ve had 2 wins in a row. there is no progression. the pip system needs to be scrapped. A points system would be better, have a preseason to see where people end up then have divisions based on points. at the end of every season, the top how ever many of each division move up, and the bottom how ever many move down. sure they’ll need to rework the achievements for it, but that way if your good you’ll move up. if your not, you can have “fun” in your division.

many people on the forums like to blame their close games loses on the match making however they fail to realize close games means the match making is working well.
personally i hate close games especially when my team loses.
i prefer easy blow out games when my team rekts the other team.
Eh… Most of my games have been stomps in Sapphire. I wouldn’t say it’s been particularly even or fun. I only need to get to Ruby, but the profession achievements are the bane of my existence. They tend to favor players that heavily multi-class. I can’t really complain since ArenaNet let me bypass most of my threshold achievements, but now I’ve got nothing to do until the MMR settles in a few weeks/1month etc.
System feels more fair.
If thats the experience for the majority. I have to congratulate ANET for their work.
You need to look at it differently? What do we expect of a matchmaking system?
1. Close games
2. Neither side is favored to win through MMR.
Current system?
1. Close games? Too early to tell. Jury is still out
2. Neither side favored? Fail.
Part of the reason I got bored last season is I got to Ruby with a 38-3 record and couldn’t figure out what the point was. Admittedly, if I knew my tier this season would’ve been tied to last season I might’ve gone for Diamond.

Competitive games are not for you my friend if you think a close loss like this is indicative of a matchmaking failure.
PvE is a couple forums up and you can win to your hearts content up there.
It seems okay so far:
And to Silverstone: you did great considering you had emeralds on the other team.
(edited by Agemnon.4608)
For me, the system couldn’t be more of a mess. Such a bad experience yesterday. The first 10 matches were all blow outs. Like not even remotely fun matches in Sapphire.
Here is my experience: win 500-100, lose 500-100, win 500-100, lose 500-100. Ok, few matches may even be 500-300 but mostly because one of the teams got too distracted farming other team at spawn.
The matches are so predictable i can literary just play one match (even afk in it and still win, i am not kidding, i have done it), then just afk for next one because no matter what i do i am supposed to lose according to matchmaking.
If you have high enough MMR and queue solo, you never go in match with 50% win chance. One match you have 90% win chance, next match exactly opposite (so 10%). 3-5 min in queue, 10 min per matches, 50% of those guaranteed loss or win respectively. Is this enjoyable? You tell me.

When the matchmaker looks for a match for you, part of the algorithm’s considerations is to look within 15 pips in either direction from your current spot for both teammates and opponents (at least to start with; this range expands the longer the matchmaker goes without finding enough players in that starting range). According to your pip location at the time of that match, this means that it’s entirely possible that the system could grab either allies or opponents from the first tier in Emerald, even without having to expand its range, which is why there were a couple of them on the other team. There are a number of other factors at work here that let the system ultimately decide that it was okay to put those two Emeralds on the opposing team and still keep the match balanced (most notably MMR considerations), but the matchmaker doesn’t do things like just pick several people at random from that 15 pip range and say, “Okay, that’s 10 players, let’s start.”
I don’t see much of a difference.. it’s still stacked heavily towards one team before the match even starts.. it’s just the same as last season.
This is my experience too. I won’t be playing again this season.

Remember, remember, 15th of November
If so many of you are so extremely unhappy with matchmaking why don’t you get teams? Or make teams if you can’t get one. Seems to me pretty much every single person here complains about the rest their respective teams being so awful, why don’t you guys get together and play then?
Personally I wouldn’t play with you guys in a million years but the solution is right there really. If that’s too much effort or you have too much life to form a team and play a couple hours a week but you still want to be #1 or not play then well, the latter is probably the option for you.

Some people don’t have an option for it. Besides getting 5 decent players together at the same time can be quite hard actually.

How many games am I expected to play before I’m matched with relatively equally skilled players?
I’m against people I can consistently 2vs1, but my teammates are so bad every single game, or they DC, that I actually can’t do anything to win regardless of how much better I am than my opponents.
Not a very fun experience, honestly. Am I expected to queue with multiple people to have a chance at winning and get myself to a MMR that reflects my actual skill?(I’m not good, but the people I’m with and against are not equally skilled at all)

The system is random as hell: sometimes a streak of 5 wins on a row and then a streak of 9 loses on a row (my personal record EVER). Still, I’m almost done with Emerald now.

TBH, there is always room to improve. But if we are the first ones on forums criticizing every single change the devs decide to implement. We should also be the first ones on forums recognizing when things are better or are going in a good direction.
ANET is doing this for us because we are their business (literally).
So, at least lets recognize that this season seems more promising than the previous two and keep giving them CONSTRUCTIVE feedback.
Matchmaking is back to 50/50 odds whether or not this is unintentional, everyone I have talked to in game has said the same thing.
MM seems to work so far only thing what a program cannot account for is the Human. So far every game i got lost what could be win,was due to players fault for loss in my team.Their skill lvl was below average,no clue what he is doing,no CC no interrupt nothing. Not to mention the joke me playing as druid i put heals down and want cleanse people they keep running away from heal.So player awareness in middle of heat in the fight 0.Then you can even notice that some players get the tunnel view seeing only the health bar and slight view from health bar.And they wonder why they not progress league. And come here on forum to complain that MM did not give them the 1 press button win…

Lol, I like your tunnel view pic. So true.
I been having this win-streak, with games as close as 20 points.
Today was some of the best games I have played in PvP. I did see the occasional stomp here and there, but I think I am seeing much more tighter matches overall.
Going to assume it might be impossible to weed out all the stomps, it’s definitely better at least for me in Sapphire right now.
Putting Perspective on Zerg Sizes since 2012. Common Suffixes for 40+ include ~Zilla and ~Train
“Seriously, just dodge.”
I had a win streak at the very beginning with close games that weren’t at all competitive save for a couple, and now I’m in a big loss streak where the closest game has been like 500-200.
ANet decided this was what they wanted, though. S2 MM all over again.
I have played all seasons and to be honest I don’t see the difference because when I was a diamond league in season 2 it queued me with people from diamond or ruby, so it was like that before as a game designer, Erik Waananen, pointed out “15 pips lower or higher”, the only thing they did actually is degrade us 2 leagues (I was diamond now I am saphire), and that was a great move on their part, however 1 main flaw remains AND THOSE ARE PREMADES…I was 1 pip away from next league, next 5-6 matches were against premades and they beat us too easily, I will agree with a lot of people here..it is unfair, so you can’t talk about balance CAUSE THERE IS NONE, and it ticked me off so much that like Unfortunately and some other players said…I am out, going back to some other game, because a game is supposed to provide you with fun…not stress after being matched against a full premade 5 times in a row therefore taking all the fun out of the game…
1 suggstion though for all the other players stil lthere in spvp, and if you care about your community change something, make premades fight other premades, match groups together, not a premade vs random people, and don’t give me the argument that it might never find them a match, well let them wait for hours if it can’t find a match…THAT IS THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR WANTING SOMETHING IN THE GAME TOO EASY, want to play as premade them play agisnt another premade….or make solo and group queue, so many solutions, not a single one implemented
Instead of worrying about getting players within “15 pips” of each other – which is almost meaningless – why not try to get a fair mix of professions on each team and strictly put premades against premades. No solo’s mixed in.
Despite your precious “+/- 15 pip” range, there are tons of blowouts. Why would that be???
It’s usually because of 2 factors.
1. There was an experienced premade on one team and an inexperienced or no premade on the other. NOTHING is more influential to success than a coordinated premade. Just watch the pros play. There’s no way to know which premade is experienced or no. Thus, it’s best to keep them in their own que so that at least people know what to expect and suffer the consequences if your team is not on teamspeak/experienced. Now, it’s just forcing misery on to non-premades and allowing organized groups to exploit Anet’s matchmaking.
2. Factor in professions when forming “fair” teams. Necros are absolute garbage at the beginning of a match. Even the very best teams can barely keep one up at the start (just watch the recent pro league). Thus, if you put 3 Necros or 3 Thieves on one team, you are totally sabotaging whatever minor benefit you gained by ensuring all the players are within 15 pips.
I’m actually surprised to have to even say these obvious things, but the Anet’s obsession with algorithms over common sense is why they constantly have to change the formulas each season.
Returned yesterday from a pretty long break (seasons? lol). No complaints.
¯\(?)/¯
So far the matchmaking hasn’t been fair or even close. It is either a stomp on either team. Such as 500 to 200 or 500 to 100. Occasionally 500 to 300. And very very rare for me it’s a 500 to 400. I been stuck at Emerald Tier 1 this entire time. I win some games then i get stomped on the rest. I would be more excited if this was closer but it isn’t. Least in season 1 and 2 i was able to get somewhere (ruby) both times eventually but this season has just been torture. I get a good few rounds where we win by a large margin but then turn around and get beat back down to the start by once again a large margin.

Sounds like someone has no idea what they are talking about. The game are the same in unranked, sure they are close fun games. But I have never played such a stupid ranked system as this pip system. The league should work like every other league system in the world, games played/win/loss/draw. But no they had to reinvent the wheel…..

It just doesn´t protect you from getting humans in your team ;-).

LOL!
MM is worst then ever. It ridiculously big pile of Kitten. And on the top of that there is the crapy pipe system and the really unbalanced game system. GJ! U can be proud of that!
the problem is, regardless of how good you are, there will always be issues. so far in around 15 games, ive won 11 of them, but because there has been quite a few win, loss, win, loss you feel like your pip progression is really slow.
i’ve got to tier 2x prestige in legendary in past 2 seasons despite not playing much, because i farmed as a team when i played, but still, even at the start i feel like i’m put with people who are clueless.
I basically have to get lucky with team comp, try really really hard and hope i have 1-2 other team mates who do enough to help carry also, or its a loss.
There is always some idiot who says, “50/50 w/l? thats your skill cap” which, after only this many days, is bullkitten.
I feel the meta is alot more enjoyable, especially because i’m playing warr again and not cheese mode mesmer, but there still lies the problem of needing big, and multiple win streaks to see any progression, and in solo queue, when you get dc’s, afks, people who are clearly an anomalies, it can feel frustrating.
Sadly, unless you are a god + luck, you wont see much progression any time soon in solo ranked. As soon as you triple+ queue, it’s just kitten easy to farm big win streaks, and there lies the problem for more casual players.
People get demotivated really really quickly when 2 straight losses totally mess up an hour of good pip grinding, and thats the flaw in this system. Relying on 4 other players to have a brain, despite the mmr system sorting that for you, still feels like pulling straws and hoping for the long ones.
