[Merged] NA World Tournament Series Disconnects
Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.
Even the audience knew what to do faster….which is simply reset…
this is quite literally the very first time that this has happened. It’s for the very first tourney that has a decent chunk of change
So asoon as some moneys on the table all the DDOS’ers come out? NO WAY?
Get real, they’re doing the best they can.
The best they can do = a cancelled joke of a tourny? You got high expectations lol.
no one EVER expected it to happen. Don’t pretend like you did.
You’ve obviously never been involved in online esports before, DDOS’ing is so rampant that nearly every top player in other games uses a proxy for skype, and will do whatever possible to keep their IP hidden. Blizzard and Riot employees have released statements with info on how to prevent DDOS’ing in the past, as well as many forum posts and guides.
They took the countermeasures they had available to keep the tourney legit.
Do you know what a countermeasure is? Please explain to us what countermeasure Aanet had for DDOSing. Take your time.
+1 for 3v3 or 2v2 deathmatch
I’m gonna be real, I don’t think anyone got ping bombed.
I think people just faking dc, or have bad internet.
One thing you need for a ping bomb to occur is YOU giving someone your IP address, and I’m not too in depth into this game to tell if it shows your IP address to everyone (doubt it), if you stream I doubt your IP address is shown there as well.
If you seriously got ping bombed, it was by someone who knows you, and has your IP, pretty sad.
Now back in my time, Quake 1, you simply type “status” and it shows everyone IP address, you use it mainly to 100% identify a player because some people use other peoples names. But that’s the game that introduced bots (real bots (they shoot from there butts, not look at you 100% accurate, death upon being in LOS even from behind), haven’t seen any bots since) and ping bombs (again haven’t seen any games with people ping bombing players since).
Ya’ll silly thinking there’s a ping bomb conspiracy going. I don’t even recall anyone in StarCraft being ping bombed and that’s a real esports game, first esports game there was I think.
But yup, if there is DDoSing going on, its by someone you know. Kinda like how kitten works, high % chance of the time someone who gets kitten d, is by someone who they know.
I think there should be some set rules. I understood (from past tournaments) the following:
1. If a DC occurs before 1:30 and it is called out there is a reset. Each team only gets 1 reset.
2. Rubberbanding does not warrant a DC.
Starting with ToG the rules seemed to have changed to:
1. DC in the start of a match warrants a reset.
2. Rubberbanding warrants a reset.
However, these weren’t explicit.
Currently:
1. DCing at the start of the match does not warrant a reset and the other team must be asked if they will allow a match reset (such is the case of Blacklisted).
2. Rubberbaning warrants a reset… despite both teams on equal ground.
3. DCing near the end of the game (roughly after 8 mins) warrants a reset, without having to question the other team. Each team gets unlimited resets.
For future use, it would be great to know what rule set we are following.
As for the DC issue: I had no internet problems for months. This morning was fine. Then I joined the server and I DC’d before the match started, I relog and we play, we get rubberbanded and have to reset, before the match starts I DC, we play the match and lose. Second game, Hans DCs and I’m lagging a bit. Upon hearing the other team won’t allow us to reset I just leave the match. For the subsequent hour I keep DCing although my stream was fine, my TS was fine, my browser was fine, just GW2 (same for Hans).
@ those who think its fake. That’s what I thought the rules were for… but there doesn’t seem to be any…
It’s kind of strange that in 5 matches there were 8 DCs… 20% of the players couldn’t play…
+ this forum is FULL of people having connection issues recently….
Am I good?… I’m good.

If it really was due to targeted DDOS attacks then there’s not much ANet could’ve done to prevent it. They still should have had firm rules in place to deal with what happens in the event of a player getting targeted.
Also, reconnecting and not being able to rejoin the arena the match is in because it was full… well, that’s got nothing to do with DDOS, someone screwed up there.

I agree with this. NA the dream!
Anyway, there should probably be two things happening for future WTS.
1) Implement a way to pause the game
2) Have all players protect their IPs. Even the biggest games like league of legends have rampant DDOSers in the challenger scene, so it’s not anything new.

Hello, this is Over Powered Necro from In Memory of Vyndetta, what happened after the stream was crazy stressful.
Two individuals in our team, Java and Young Thadeus were DDOSed, not to be confused with the typical “dc”, as described by them, “People start cutting out on Team speak, everyone starts walking in place and I am disconnected from the game as well as all other internet services”.
Oddly enough, this only occurred when facing The Uncivilized Rough Boys and only when we were wining. If you do not believe me, you can get a glimpse at the games that were streamed, just after 90 sec into the first game Thadeus was ddosed for the duration of the game, after that game was over he was promptly able to return but it was already forfeit. The third game, when it was evident that we were going to win, both Java and Thadeus were heavily ddosed. These occurrences turned from “random coincidence” into a nightmare as it occurred over, and over, and over only when facing rough boys.
As to how this was able to take place, Crysis and I were completely unaffected, so, the IP of skovex, thadeus, and java, were most likely made available through skype or TS that they had accessed recently.
Why only a few of us were getting ddosed: Skovex’s power had gone out the day before and he was in a different residence so his IP was changed. The second time we were able to face Rough Boys (after climbing back through the loser’s bracket) we had thadeus connect to the internet at a friend’s house. The only problem was that Java was unable to change his IP or go to utilize the internet in a different location, this caused us to still be 4v5 and ultimately lose.
To YOU rough boys, it was plainly obvious that you were the cause of the DDOS, you lost my respect and the respect of many other players, YOU effectively destroyed the tournament for many of the people watching and disgraced Arenanet in the area of potential E-Sports.
The only solution I could see is to redo the entire tournament and give everyone ample time to play at their friends house or buy a new modem.

I want to point out that I feel Grouch made the best calls tonight given the information, resources, and time he had available. Obviously this was an extremely unfortunate occurrence as I personally expected all play to be fair, but alas this was a mistake as we cannot control the actions of outside individuals who look to stunt the growth of the competitive scene, and there was very little that could have been done to prevent this given that it had not been an issue in the past.
This was a new experience for all players in the scene, and I think it is important for large events in the future for players to fortify themselves against DDoS attacks. In future events I am more than sure that players will be assisted with fortifying their connections to hopefully minimize the chance of this happening again. With that said however, no preparation is full proof, and if ever before there was not enough evidence to rationalize the implementation of a pause functionality, tonight should hopefully shatter those claims.
The most important thing at this point is for us to look to the future in Beijing. This is a completely new issue for our small scene, and something that ArenaNet could not have controlled. Hampering on the issues tonight, as unfortunate as it was, will only give the individual(s) responsible the attention and self-satisfaction that he/she/they was/were looking for in the first place, and to attach ourselves to the events tonight will only encourage him, her, or them to perform such actions in the future. The big event itself is still on, and we have some excellent matches to look forward to, as well as two more awesome seasons to come in future months.
Congratulations to The Abjured, The Civilized Gentlemen, PRIME, and Team SALA for qualifying, and I wish all twenty of you the best of luck in the main event, just one short month away.

Don’t want to start BM, but considering a couple players on the team I would not at ALL be surprised if they did this.
Certainly an eloquent post, I do understand it is not quite possible to provide tangible evidence about those individuals who wish to “Stunt the growth of the competitive scene” but by not acting on the obvious issues that were occurring in the games we had against The Uncivilized Rough Boys further issues can develop.
Reasonable solutions to the the games we had against the team:
Only count the games were there were no DC’s (There was one, I do recall!)
Provide information on DDOS before the start of the game (resetting modem does NOT reset IP)
Redo the tournament so NA actually has something to watch (I know most of it is recorded, but who wants to watch a VOD over a live stream?)
In the end, the tournament was for the enjoyment and betterment of the PvP community in Guild Wars 2 and they were the ones sorely cheated out of some incredible matches, the excitement is gone when it is live no longer. If there were a redo tournament scheduled, all people effected previously would go to GREAT measure to secure themselves against the threat of DDOS attack and provide the views and Guild Wars 2 community with something much better to watch then 5v4 4v3 5v3 4v4 etc.

Yall full of yourselves, if Uncivilized Rough Boyz had to DDoS anyone it would have to be Abjured, because DDoS MoV wouldn’t even been worth doing, if they lost to you it would have been in upset.
I’m not too familiar with whose on what team anymore since people keep changing there teams, but I do know who play together, and if nobody from UCRB plays with anyone from MoV than theres NOOOO way they could have ping bombed you without your IPs. I doubt anyone from UCRB knows Java and Young’s IP.
If anyone, its whoever you didn’t accept on your team and have vengeance or envy and don’t want you guys to go to the tournament without them on your team. (someone close to you… You know how the saying goes keep your enemies close, but your friends closer).
Sooo much fakeness of dc. Like when Grouch mentioned “if it goes into a 3v4 guys, we will pull the plug”… Immediately someone dc’ed… Its not like UCRB knows all the other teams IP and wanted to ping bomb another dude. All fake dc’s and bad internet. There’s no need for a superior team to DDoS a team expected to lose to them.
If you really expect cheating, you have to show evidence that without doubt you can tell something wrong is happening. record that stuff, screenshot and whatever, don’t just talk and talk without lots of proof. You guys just as bad as that WvW thread claiming people trebbing off map and other world should lose because hack.
How I know you guys make excuses? Went from server lag, to DDoS attack (really problem is bad internet, faking dc) What ya gonna make up next? Hacking into your voice chat?
That network error you see on the other threads is most likely old issue, they stuck in que, which happens when you try to do a tournament when they have ‘a new build is available reset your client’. You don’t do tournaments during that because it will mess up the server and network and complicated to talk about. I use to que in those, believing I get easy win, but its just not worth it.
Obviously you just went and read the last post, if you don’t think Abjured got DDOS’d ask Ostrich. Also, the game that was 3v4 we were in the lead and Java was DDOSed out, do you really think we would have faked that?

Lol, far from it. Great to see it get money, I’m all for GW2 PvP going big…but 2,000 viewers for a tournament that decides who goes for $50,000? Take away precursor/llama giveaways and you can take a zero off.
I used to run the Academy Gaming tournaments for GW2.
who played for Abjured ? Noscoc and caed did not, right?
whats wrong with you people? This just shows how guildwars 2 pvp works – lagging, disconect, ragequits, 4v5s
everyone see this everyday in gw2 pvp so whats wrong when they dont hide how kittenty it is in tournaments?

Why isn’t it fun? Downed state, game mode, lack of build options, particle effect spam, condescending developers… Take your pick.

Downed state is confusing for esportz, anet pls fix.
No. Wasnt sarcastic.
Or… give red downed penalty after first down.
Take your time, i’m not in hurry, it’s fine if you release this with new game modes, not important before that.

This is absolutely sickening, If anet wants to hold a proper tournament, they need to have the appropriate systems in place to hold one.
Just so people are clear, the PvP devs fight hard to even have these tournaments. It is that difficult getting real assistance from higher ups that we are left running it with such low resources that the devs themselves actually dedicate their spare time to assist with the tournament and appreciate every second dedicated by the community to coordinate them. Any issues with resources comes from higher up the chain.
I can’t ask for LAN/Wired connection methods, but at least postpone your tournament until your current server issues are resolved.
Extremely hard call to make, almost impossible. Why?
1. People don’t magically turn up in China
– Once the tournament is complete there is all the triple checks in eligibility, issues with passports etc etc. The deadlines are already so tight.
2. People can’t always be available.
– The amount of work and sometimes ‘babysitting’ to make sure all players for each team aren’t afk when their match comes around is difficult enough as it is let alone keeping everyone together for hours on end. Some teams would simply have to drop due to commitments if delays are too long. Hats off to the guys running this as they have done an outstanding job keeping everyone at attention.
The players rely on your servers, in combination with their ISP, 2 very fickle systems. And I just witnessed a game go 4v5 from the very beginning of the match, no intervention from admin, and they simply just gave the match away rather than restarting.
I don’t know about you, but this is unacceptable behavior from the admins and to be honest, the casters seem completely oblivious to the fact that this creates a massive unfair divide. It was almost as if they didn’t care, or feel that they may as well fight a 4v5 “just because”.
These tournaments are becoming a disgrace to proper #esports
The admin knew exactly how bad the situation was, they were dieing on the inside watching it happen I can guarantee.. As a community member running an event like this your powers and options are very limited. I bet my left kitten their only option (factoring in time restrictions, limited power etc) that was left to them was to offer the other team the chance to be extremely good sports or simply take the controversial win. The team chose the latter and I’m certain the admins would of been disappointed yet understanding of the situation.
I ask you to remember that the admins are running this FOR FREE. You get to kick back with a beer, relax and enjoy. They are dripping blood, sweat and tears FOR WEEKS EVEN MONTHS to make this happen because they believe you deserve it!!!! The kicker is they forfeit their chance at the opportunity they are trying to give you!
So to avoid burning out those committed admins and spvp devoted devs at least have the decency to add constructive criticism. Instead of essentially kittening it up for the community that do appreciate the hard work, passion and dedication these guys are putting in.

rules say, on ESL at least, that match is gonna be restarted only if the winning team gets lags and dcs (For obvious reasons) counting both total pnts AND capture points..if they already have some pnts advantage ofc they won’t reset the match…but if it was on start with no winning team they should always restart it i guess
anyway if you guys think you had been ddos’ed then you should ask yourself how they got your ip, if you were on ts only server’s admins can get client’s ips…just saying…you ddos ip adresses not “players”

how bout dat?
I don’t get your hatred about downstate,
I have a theory for how the player inflicting the DDOSing could have gotten the IP addresses.
A lot of the PvP community plays on certain community Teamspeaks together, and a lot of the players on those top teams in the tourney have mixed around and played on each other’s Teamspeak servers together before.
Now, in order for this to work, the user needs to either needs to be an admin on the TS server (so that they can see the connection logs and see people’s IPs), or they need to know how to extract other people’s IP addresses on a TS server even without admin privileges (requires a bit of knowledge with how TS works).
If you were all playing on not-private Teamspeaks (such as simply playing on one of the community ones but in a password protected room) a person could have watched you connect and re-connect to TS, and used that information to DDOS accordingly.
A lot of people do use the Fight Club Teamspeak server. Skype is also a likely culprit. When playing in major events like these, we recommend that you play from a different IP address, do not connect to Skype, and use a different, more secure TS server. The following message is displayed to all users on connecting to the Fight Club Teamspeak server: “If youre planning on using this TS for WTS/ToG, please have a seperate TS prepared to use in the event of trolling/DDoSing as this TS will be a prime target for trolling.”
Competitive Warrior, Ele, Mesmer, Ranger, Engineer, Thief
also says Oct*B*ober, not trustworthy source
anyway, im not saying its players fault but they should really start to protect their IPs
I want to point out for all future events if you are worried about ddos there are simple tools to prevent an amateur ddos attack. As I don’t have access/wasn’t there when the ddos happened I cannot tell you which method was used or how to prevent it but in the future there are several USER-END (not arenanet) tools that can defiantly help. I will also not be posting them here as this should be handled through the tournament organizers.

Was that because I erroneusly used the word “innuendo” (English is not my first language) or because of other things? If so, explain yourself. I’m soooo confused :C
Uhh some how my separate thread became the original post in this thread.. Whoever wants to know my team’s POV of the story of what happened yesterday read the first post. Also to whoever thinks rough boyz wouldn’t know java or my IPs, java has known kaypud on rough boyz for eight years, and I have known 4/5 rough boyz since beta two years ago.
I didn’t realize, but after scouring the internet a bit, apparently just knowing a user’s Skype information is enough to compromise a person’s internet connection. There are apparently services that trace people by their Skype username to their IP address, then you can pay to DDOS them. That’s pretty screwed up.
I recall watching some of the earliest GvG tournaments in GW1. In some of those I recall seeing the entire team in a large room playing the game. I can’t remember the details, it’s been 7 years ago or so but I believe these locations were provided by Anet at the time.
This is back when the whole Guild Wars esports thing was fresh, it’s both funny and sad that after 7 years it’s far worse than better.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
There really needs to be an official response on the situation and disaster that occurred on Sunday from Anet.

I just want to forget about yesterday. I feel really sorry for everyone involved and slightly guilty for forcing my team into a scenario where we had the chance of losing what was going to be ours. I’m sorry to the people who feel they got screwed out of a chance to go to China, but we were the sure winners anyways… We were on every kitten day for 4-6 hours practicing. I’ve kept that schedule up since before TOL2.
I’ve practiced far more than anyone else for this and I got screwed out of even playing in it… The entire time we fought rough boiz, I was getting DDOS’d at the most opportune times. There was one game where in foefire they went for a lord rush (because they were going to lose otherwise) that we barely held off even though I got DDOS’d right when they got to the lord. I almost kitten myself, but my team held it off 4v5 for the fourth game against them…
Basically, my entire team 4v5’d. Even with the honor system in place (as many complaints as there were), I’d like to point out that those games would have been 500-0, and the last game in the series nearly was until I got DDOS’d again. I had a 2 second+ delay even when I was in the game. It’s obvious something fishy went down and no one expected it.
I’m glad this was just a qualifier, but my god was that insane. Grouch did a great job and made the right choices. Props to the ESL admins and the casters who stuck through a grueling day of drama and esports, as well.

Sorry man, but just because you think you were the “sure winners anyways” doesn’t trump the fact that this was supposed to be an official tournament sanctioned by ANet with set rules and procedures . Even if you 500-0 every single team the matches need to be played out regardless of what everyone’s expectations of the tournament were.
Every team except for Blacklisted got at the very least, a second chance upon someone disconnecting. What happened to us (Blacklisted) at this point is beyond atrocious. It is absolutely comical in light of all these other events.
