Why can they get 1200 range?

I don’t know about subpar compared to X, Y, or Z, sorry, I don’t play enough mesmer. My point? I don’t really have one. I just thought 1200 range is very strong for a traditional melee weapon. Heck, shortbow rangers don’t even get 1200 range. Just a thought :P

So my question boils down to “why is that necessary?”. That’s all. I’m not asking for a nerf or a buff to anything, I just saw an apparent contradiction in my mind and wondered if there was a neat reason for a cleaving weapon to be able to hit at 1200 instead of 900 which is where I assumed it always was. Again, I’m not asking for a nerf, rather, just understanding of why that’s the case.

Greatsword has the same auto attack style as a long bow… (Our mirror of it?)
DPS decreases as the target gets closer.

Yea and also it doesn’t stack 9 bleeds(ALL THE TIME) or have evades like a shortbow….

Mesmers are the trickster illusionist class; the greatsword is a melee weapon but used to shoot lasers by the mesmer..

GS and staff are 2 completely different weapons tho

with staff you will never catch a running target, nor your able to deal reliable damage at distance

and again.. dunno why you’re comparing to other weapons, gs auto attack has no travel time and hits x3 per auto attack… also the mesmer itself doesnt stack bleeds, but the clones stack a decent amount of bleeds with auto attack( if you’re looking for a comparison )

Yes; I didn’t say they were the same thing, I said the GS is subpar to staff…. overall.
Two stuns and Sword 3 is fine for catching mid range targets..
I’m also not alone when I play these games..

When it becomes my job to catch a running target I’ll think about switching to it…

lol not sure why you’re letting your imagination go wild, the OP isnt asking about which weapon is stronger nor how to catch a target mid range, or how many people you play with :P ur getting a little bit carried away there. :p

which statement tho, i never brought up staff :p and when you did i just pointed out 2 differences between the weapon on topic and staff but then you broght s/p and utility into the convo :\ at this point you’re comparing GS to a build :P

anyways, i was just making a joke at start, didnt meant for u to get so serious

and well, shortbow and long bow having same range, really made no sense, its just odd they waited so long to make the change

I only edit to add stuff to comments / fix typos. Darnis, relax. Breath. I’m not mad about shortbow, if you read posts on ranger forums, I was one of probably 3 people who thought it was a smart change to make shortbow 900. I’m just learning about other classes and learning about mesmer greatsword seemed contradictory. I still haven’t seen you do anything but attack me when all I asked was for logic as to why. "Whiner...big bad mesmer" you’re really mean dude. Go fly a kite.

The GS is the only weapon that can put some damage and pressure on disengaging enemies. All the other weapons don’t have the range or very slow moving projectiles. Only exception would be traited OH pistol, and besides the stun shot, landing iDuelist over a 1200 distance more than often fails.

Defenisve in-combat mobility is great (kiting), but chasing someone with a Mesmer is just horrible. I guess that is one of the reasons why iZerker also cripples the enemy.

You may not realize what you’re saying or you’re deliberately saying it while pretending to be genuinely naive.

Let me spell it out for you and your friend;

Seems ODDLY SPECIFIC, in regards to the previous comment, it seems you are SUGGESTING that it be shaved down to 900. Not melee range either, 900, why 900?

If you wanted an exploration of a metaphysical question you would not have posted in the spvp forums, you would have posted in the mesmer forums; because really Why do greatswords shoot purple beams at long ranges, man?

It’s pretty simple: A Mesmer’s greatsword is their long range weapon.

That might confuse you, surely a Greatsword is a melee weapon(!!), till I blow your mind with the next data drop.

Well, though it is a greatsword, the skill is “Illusionary Wave” with a picture of a wave on it. Waves move. Pretty far.

EM waves maybe. Try making waves in pitch once. By the way, you ever see the Pitch Drop Experiment? Cool stuff.
