After browsing the forums for a bit I decided I would sum up why mesmers are OP (yes we are unfortunately). The main reason Mesmers are currently over powered is because of phantasm dmg. Without being traited phantasms are fine but when traited for the 30% dmg increase makes a HUGE difference. My swords man hits for 5-7k non crts and 8-10k crts and my duelist hits for 4-5k and stacks 6-10 bleeds on the poor guy. While my blurred frenzy and main spam attack hit for a fraction of that blurred frenzy hits for only 3-4k. That is not right. Mesmers should be the primary source of dmg, not the secondary. The phantasms should be more support/utility (like the skill slot ones) or secondary dmg. Since we are actually real we should be the ones doing the nasty dmg. Mesmers need some sort of change with their weapon skills to make us the primary dmg.

Moa-morph is in a weird place right now. I would say make it a longer cast time and give some kinda icon or effect when you cast it. Like a bigger tell so if you get hit by it its your own fault =P.

My suggestion:
Mesmer now can only have ONE phantasm up at a time. And EVEN then, phantasm damage reduced.

This is how strong they are at the moment.

Blazer is right, mesmers only seem op because few people have practice playing against them. AoE and ranged works great against them as long as you pay attention to stacks of confusion and any bubble the mesmer may decide to drop over your head.

Just kill the phantasms. They die pretty easily in AOE. A somewhat durable Ele vs a Mesmer is pretty one sided to the Ele just due to the AOE fields.

Actually, what you mentioned is a certain build which has you focus on getting phantasms up. I call it SPSS, threeswords and a pistol.

The plus side is the damage that you can do from it is great. The downside? In sPvP it is chaotic and you’re easily able to lose your target especially if cloaking is covered. Your targeting may just go wonky and target a pet..You have no staff for teamfight potential or GS for control..

I find that build fun, although it is one of the ways to play Mesmer.

The fact that phantasms do good damage does not warrant mesmers to be OP—i think the illus define the whole mesmer game play. Noting that you’re able to cast all your phantasms and the illusions aren’t being stopped is comparable to standing still against the full blow/duration of an attack then calling it OP.

People do not know how to play against them yet, they probably tab target around not paying attention to the easily spottable mesmer, get killed then promptly head to the forums and cry about it. I see players still spamming abilities while they have 5+ stacks of confusion on them, or ranged classes spewing out abilities with that big pink bubble around there head.

Stop being bad players and learn to counter, rather than coming to the forums and crying for nerfs, I really hope Arena Net does not listen to these people. The only thing that needs adjusting is Moa morph, if anything fix the things that are broken on the class and some of the signets that don’t work.

Trim down the phantasm damage a tad, it’s way too high for a braindead 1 button-watch and awe spell. (All of them.) And rework Moa in some way… it’s just a guaranteed kill now, pop Moa when someone is on 50% hp and it’s over.

Phantasms: “kill them” is not exactly an effective way to handle it, while you run around chasing to all the phantasms you have a mesmer bashing your back, and just the confusion damage you take from killing them off is really high. And not every job has aoe’s big enough to cover an entire point and the area around it where they are likely to drop the phantasms.

Also, i know it’s easy to spot the real one. However with all the invis’s/ports that they have it’s still very confusing at times. Especially with invis resetting the target mark.

Idk, overall i think mesmers are allright. Just Moa is a bit too strong along with the dmg on Phantasms, especially the pistol one.

Just kill the phantasms. They die pretty easily in AOE. A somewhat durable Ele vs a Mesmer is pretty one sided to the Ele just due to the AOE fields.

I play a sword/sword + scepter/pistol mesmer and I can guarantee you that you wont have the chance to spam one AOE skill on your ele during the whole fight.

Mesmers, by themselves, dont do a lot of damage. Their big burst comes from their MH sword frenzy attack. The rest of their burst comes from their Phantasms. The bet way to handle a mesmer (Moa Morph aside) is to take out their Phantasms. They die in a couple of hits (3 at the most). Send your pet on it, put up a reflect spell, or simply run up and kill it or dodge when he’s casting the Phantasm and you’ll find you’ll have an easy time against the Mesmer.

Every time I die to a mesmer, and look at the death screen, things like Mage Strike and Illusionary Duelist are over 60% of the damage done to me.

It’s kind of silly.

And freaking Moa-morph. That ability needs some serious reworks. In a game as fast paced as GW2, where the longest hard CC I can think of is 3 seconds, I do not understand it. Even in something like WoW where it’s CC galore, Polymorph, an 8 second CC, still gets removed on damage.

The animation for it is hard enough to notice if the mesmer is by himself, but when the mesmer has 4 copies and there’s particle effects blinding me and he’s cloaked… you should not expect anyone to reliably dodge that.

I don’t see the issue with mesmers, they provide very little for their team if they want to run an effective build, and if you have half the brains to kill their phantasms they don’t do damage. Moa morph is fine, games aren’t meant to be balanced around 1v1.

Which :

1) take time to be casted
2) are most of the time useless in case of encounterin AoE abilities IF you don’t protect them with bubbles (let’s be honest, no one do that)

You’ll be able to negate boons and everything you want, meet a single decent AoE user and your phantasm build is countered pretty effectively, you’ll never kill him or beein that usefull apart usin your glamour skills or get cleverely in the battle to land a block / use cc’s / use blurred on a designated guy / and so on.

You’re forgettin that you won’t have that much hp first of all, and you ll be pretty versatile. Other pure dps specced toons will do the same amount of damage in the same amount of time (total of the phantasm cast – attack time), if not much more (hello sins)

Mesmer on their own do really good indirect damage. Not the raw direct damage you want to have like every “elementalist” like caster can deal, our main force is in the punishment for attackin in every single possible way (retaliation – confusion – reflection).

Phantasms are gettin killed fast, and most of people I encountered as a mesmer don’t even use the defensive abilities (not talkin about bubbles or aegis of guardians) such as blocking.

In fact, even if people have these defensive options with the weapons they are usin, they sort of use it only on the player, even if it’s the phantasm who deal damage. And yeah well I’ll feel very smart at usin a block on blurred frenzy instead than on a swordsman.

Mesmers need some sort of change with their weapon skills to make us the primary dmg.

Definitely not. You do have tons of damage already with conditions that are applied with some of your weapons, and raw physical damage is already really not that bad.

Just be really quick responsive against a mesmer and identify the weapon he’s usin asap. If you see him with sword and pistol you know that you’ll need dodges and block in the first phase of the combat, then you have time to breath, and it mean force him to heal / teleport away.

Then depending of his 2nd weapon you know what you’ll have to do. If it’s GS stay away and dps at range, it does wonders. If Staff you ll need another block for the warlock damage or better, a reflection.

Just be super aware of that. It’s not that hard to take a mesmer down, most of the phantasm builds are easily countered, but it can be a bit problematic if the mesmer meanwhile stack a good amount of confusion …

Well, about the “stay away and dps at range” for the GS mesmer it’s a bit tricky because the number 1 skill they have deal more and more damage if you are sort of really far, so just don’t be too far but still enough to not be reachable by the knockback (or hint, just charge him, make him panic and use the knockback so you can in some way predict and dodge it), dps, and get ready for the phantasm.

It’s a physical damage one so again you’ll need a block, or a cc.

It’s not that ridiculous to use cc’s on phantasms if you dont want to take damage, as long as you’re sure that you have what it take to destruct it fast.

Well after plating some more sPvP I have to say that mesmers are really imba. Besides the ridicoulus damage here are some few points that makes this class really frustrating to play against.

1. The call target sign disappears from the mesmer if they stealth and get back into view. You can just remove that functionality altogether if thats intended.

2. The clones does insane damage but they also shot through solid objects. Hence you can’t use terrain to your advantage.

I had one more point but I can’t remember it now..

They’re not really overpowered. They have a mechanic that needs to be countered, though so few people seem willing to learn how to do that or go with a glass cannon build and then complain about how they’re being blown up by other classes.

Asking for one of their core mechanics to be changed seems a bit…counter productive.
