So I was in SoloQ and the enemy had this mesmer whom which I fought a couple of times,never seen him before in my life,ever. A couple of fights is all we had. Some he won,some I won. Pictures below following the conversation after the SoloQ match.

Is this what a lot of the pvp players have become? Is this the message “top pvp” players gives us by playing “META”,unintentionally or intentionally? Are there no gleams of sunlight escaping through the cracks in the META mountain? Has META forever embraced us in it’s veiling,comforting,everlasting darkness?

It’s not just this player,countless other players act like this,I’ve seen it several times but this was it. I just had to go QQ to the forum now.

Please,fellow pvp’ers,respect each other,and don’t let IT throw you into the Rivers of Arrogance,you might drown.

EDIT: I don’t even run a mantra build. Does one mass invisibility automatically make you a PU mesmer because it’s a stealth skill?….

That is true,I do run that specific trait. However,there’s several other factors to count for as well,skill,experience and build style.

All I wanted was to have a couple of small duels for the fun of it,and for the experience buuuuuut clearly since he thought I played a mantra build (LOL) he completely blew it off because it wasn’t necessary,he would win no matter what. facepalm

People are just too proud to accept faillure… Especially when they do not recognize a build, they will insult people, tell them they run cheese, and basically calling them noobs over and over again – but by this you have won both the match and the game…

On META builds though, people tend to forget that they originate from somewhere… Before ToL #1, the only Axe warrior I knew was a guildmate of mine – but when ROM played an Axe build, people suddenly jumped on it… Same for S/D Thieves which were considered a 1v1 build only, and last but not least Mesmers in general since they were considered suboptimal

Sometimes you need to cast aside as to what is familiar and explore the world beyond the META – only then will you inspire people to run different setups and in turn inspire a larger crowd… There will always be suboptimal builds, sure, but that does not mean everything is set in stone

Alright,I’ve edited it to correctly reflect what I mean. I did not intend to stereotype a whole player base,I’m sorry if I’ve offended you.

I’d also like to just copy paste this here from my OP ;

That mesmer guy is obviously crazy.

Doesn’t mean the whole pvp community is like that.

Edit: as a more serious side note, the guy is completely oblivious of the fact that his “meta” way of thinking only applies to top tier of play, where everyone has near perfect mechanics. In low and mid tier level people are “messing up” and outperforming each other mechanically all the time, so the build doesn’t matter as much.

Rule number 1 for safe solo arena playing: Disable your entire chat, use only combat log instead.

I have a little over 2 years, and only a handful of decent interactions that came from these types of whispers. A few cool opponents in WvW, one new guy in spvp, and that’s it. But that’s still only 1 guy in pvp, ever.

Most whispers, map chat and say chat comments aren’t worth your time because they are coming from people who are mad, usually from thinking they are superior one way or another but they lost. Just lol and move on.

It’s not limited to in-game, when I streamed/played gw2 people felt the right to tell me what build to play in twitch chat. It would be the same people all the time like they have a grudge on me cause I don’t play the same spec as them. This games community is small and pvp even smaller. The age of most pvpers is young and they live by set rules any chance they have true freedom is new and they blow it. Just look at the state of the game

I don’t even bother replying to anyone who sends rude messages to me in PvP. If it gets bad enough, I block them. They are literally not worth my time.

Yeah I never understood the meta mentality… In order for a build to be meta it has to be played by a large number of people…. so if a build is difficult to play it won’t make meta until it is significantly over powered.

I joined a level 50 fractal the other day and was kicked out after being told “the meta is the meta for a reason” before we even began. All I could think after that is why do people feel elite playing a build they put no thought in to that nearly anyone can learn to play with relative ease? The meta is the meta because it’s for the most part simplistic enough that it can be explained and understood with little to no effort.

Happens a good bit, just ignore it or argue for the sake of arguing. Point out that new things will never come if new things are never tried[my usual argument].

Also, I’ve been accused of being a PU often too. Granted, my build and play style is, like, 60% PU-like, but that’s what people jump to when a mesmer uses stealth or torch.

i give you example from yesterday tpvp i had
group of 4 guildeis looked 1 more so i wispered them and told them i am mesmer with condi mtd build (not power shatter) they took me anyway (which is nice)
they had 1 power mesmer
no ts (so i had to chat before the fight and observe the map more often to see movemet)
i went middle with 2 home 3 middle split. we cap it and i run to far for 1v1
i won and cap it. then 2 enemeis came for 1v2 and i hold it for 1 min while killing 1. then another 2 came and i manage to contest in 1 more minute until the 4th came and i run away.
what happend in those 2 -3 min? that because i manage to do 1v3 for 2 min my team hold easily 2 points for 3 min and we won
what happend after the match – kicked out… i wispered ty and wonder why

answer – you play mesmer and we have one already and you dont use meta build….
i lol- common guys 1v3/4 and instead of asking me how i did it they kicked me… not using meta build

i know meta is for the average ppl who dont open their mind to new skills/ build etc..
sure are great builds which optimom for pvp arena but maybe just maybe another build will arise after new patch to test out…

so i guess only after some OP mesmer player would test it and confirm it so other followers confirms it either . no hope for the meta…

I had more good experience with ppl in PvP than bad one. Yes of course there is always some QQing in map chat when one team is losing and 1 guys is blaming everybody, but I just ignore those. Talk to nice ppl and add some ppl to my friend list to keep playing with team.

There are three main types of player in PvP: Those who want to be at the top of their game and look for the highest tier of competition the game can offer, those who enjoy a friendly competition between fellow like minded players and those that want to make themselves appear better than others by any means necessary.

Those who want to improve their own skill have dedication and patience, because they know it takes time and effort to be as good as they can. They also have a great deal of respect for thier fellow competitors and are not afraid to share their knowledge.

Those who enjoy a friendly competition do not take the game seriously, but do enjoy a hard fought battle and enjoy the challenge of fighting other skilled players. They too have respect for other players and are happy to share what they know.

Those who seek to appear better than they are will lie, cheat and belittle others to make out they are in the top tier and a top player. They do not share their knowledge because they feel it will either put them at an even greater disadvantage than they already are or it makes them seem like they have some secret knowledge only the top players would understand.

Unfortunately, pretending to be the best is a hell of a lot easier than actually being the best, and therefore a lot more players are able to do it. I’m not saying that most players are the fakers. I actually believe the opposite is true. I’m just saying that more players are capable of faking it. Also, in order to make the illusion more believable (in the faker’s mind), they need to shout and scream until someone believes them, because any real effort will only reveal the lie.

The moral of this long winded story is, if they are unwilling to accept a friendly battle ‘just for the fun of it’ and only throw words of how great they are at you, then they are not worth talking to. If they claim you will always lose, simply say ‘Ok, thanks. Bye.’.

Without an audience their illusion is pointless.

From my understanding meta builds are simply the one/several perceived to be the most effective in a particular game mode. Meta builds are usually designed/tested to be superior in a conquest setting and may work in synergy (Engi-Necro, Thief-Mesmer) to increase on-point effectiveness.

That really doesn’t mean it’s the “best build” and although the game is not balanced around all builds, there are some that are just superior in some 1v1 match-ups that are not “conquest” meta but instead “duel” or “WvW duel” meta.

Makes you cringe when you hear “my build is meta so it’s best build” or “whats the best build for my class” because there’s (given the lack of choices, still) more than 1 build for everything.

By the way, whoever talked crap at you probably got an ego boost out of mouthing you down. Shudder of pleasure as he imagines your despair in light of his highly original knowledge. And best of all, nothing you can do to get him to fight. Just another anonymous internet user enslaved to the GIFT.

I agree Ralkuth. Another reason why the best build ideology doesn’t work is because we are all different. We all like different playstyles and have different capabilities within those playstyles. A meta build may work wonders for one player but feels very awkward to another.

Generally, meta builds are popular because they are more effective for a larger group of players than other builds might be, but that doesn’t mean they will be effective or the best build for everyone. Your hybrid or unique build could very well out perform a meta build if it suits your playstyle perfectly and your skill is greater than your meta build opponent.

Anyone who believes that simply having a meta build equipped guarantees a win is fooling themselves. Even meta builds require an element of skill to master and an element of synergy with your capabilities to utilize to the best of your ability.

One size does not fit all.

Like half of pvp players are like this. While they winning they are best players in universe and you are useless pve noob who is carried by him or so and if you kill them oh dear.. You get whole novel of reasons why you won so easy from broken fingers to grandma licking their hairs, I ve heard hows my build is OP meta (I never use other then my own builds) how I play OP class and ofc how AI (read tuirrets) won instead of me. Its ironic this argument using almost exclusivly by ilusion spaming Mesmers.

Ugh your guildies seem narrow minded and shallow for kicking you out due to your non meta build. But I think they did it because you werent on TS. Some people are super anaal about TS

might so.. but i guess thos guildies failed to understand than even without ts i did nice job .. but the main reason i think that in the tpvp arena classes expected to play surtain build
so if guard- bunker
ele – d/d or healer bunker staff
mesmer – shatter
thief s/d d/p
engi – turret
etc…

so conclusion is they think that build carry the player and i think its both (favor the player)

You sir, are terribly mistaken…

Meta builds are more than often build in conjuction as a team, and most often made by someone who feels comfortable running a build…
Meta builds also do not drop from the sky, they are created because people try different things… This is either because of boredom, or because the said person cannot adapt to the playstyle a set has to offer

What you are mixing up are optimal and suboptimal builds… You are not going to do much by running a Shatter Heal Mesmer, but if you run a Lockdown Mesmer, you could outpeform Standard Shatter’s given who plays better or is in a different comfort zone…

Take your head out of the ground, what is written on paper is not set in stone… Develop your own style and get good at it… Adapt to the situation, learn from mistakes… Don’t pick up a Meta build and think you are ahead of people, because you might regret it the moment someone shows up with a different build and destroys you with it…

i remember how the s/d meta 2.0.0.6.6 build started long ago
everyone call it uneffective no power no crit, noob.
but boom 1 patch change it all strength runes … and now history – META after the top players liked it
