Speaking about soloqueue, I’ve a bad feeling, after your placement, don’t seem you can move a lot from your initial mmr, I see the same pattern you had in the previous sesons without the win streak that was basically super important to climb the divisions.

I’ve the feeling without a good friend in duo queue, you have really few chances to move from your initial mmr.

Maybe is too early dunno but I’ve this weird feeling and it’s not good at all.

Anyone else?

That means placement matches put you in a fair position. You are playing those 50-50 games.

But ultimately, you can gradually inflate your MMR with more and more players coming in and play. Because you have a larger MMR pool to earn your rating from.

Obviously another way to move up is to become even better players. Duo queue can help a bit but there is always a limit unless you improve your skill.

MMR calculation is pretty bad. I have 16 wins and 7 losses. My MMR is lower than a friends MMR who has 15 wins and 17!!! losses. That’s a joke. My guess it is because I have lost the first matches. In 4 of them I couldn’t do anything as I was matched with player pairs with one playing like a complete new player. I could even tell by the pet a PVE ranger was using how that game will go. And so it did …

You’re not alone, believe me. I’ve ended at 900+ mmr after 7 loses and 3 wins. Now i am climbing up, currently at 1280 mmr with 22 wins/11loses, but now getting max 14 mmr per win. Yet my friend who doesn’t even deserve to be in platinum but had luck to win first 8 matches, has like 10 wins/11 loses and pretty sure he will stay in platinum with 50/50 win ratio. I’ll get there evetually but it’ll take so much effort where some just got it by luck, definitely not because they are more skilled.. Anyway system treated me like trash (not only me), even with mine 4,5k games played. At least I had pleasure to be teamed up with Guardian summoner and clueless pve rangers/mm necros

Wins and losses are not as important as the quality of your opponents. This season is a brutal reality check for everyone who swore they were better than they actually are, and all sorts of excuses are flying around.

But yes, I figure there won’t be much movement, which I actually find pretty interesting. For the first time I’m genuinely trying to play my very best in each match instead of going like 65%, really paying attention and I’ve already noticed a difference in how effective I am.

I think this thread proves that people still don’t have any clue what MMR is and the fact that wins and losses mean nothing if you’re win streaking against 900 rating players vs 1500+ players.

You’re facing like toaster PC players in the 900 range that keyboard turn.

If that’s so, why do i have to play 10 “placement matches” if my mmr was already there before the update?

So I’m 1700 skill (solo) and I want to move up, to 1950.

What i need to do?

Because I can’t find other solutions than grab a good friend and try to win together something like 70/30 of our games (and it’s not easy at all, we need to play super well and pray that our other team mates are decents). They Are 250 mmr points and is really big (in this area).

If you have other suggestions, rdy to listen. Im 60/40 now in soloqueue and it’s not enough to significantly climb

I do, but we didn’t really have this (placement matches) in the past 4 seasons and it worked kinda fine. Maybe it’s just because its the first week, so i’m feeling a bit out of place. Gonna wait a little while to see if the playerbase changes a bit. I’m playing matches with the same ppl over and over again :/

Wow. I ended up 6:4 also and had 1214 MMR. These placement games are a joke. I increased my win rate further to 69% after placement matches but only made my way upto 1281 rating. Other people with just 50:50 winrate seem to have upto 200 MMR higher.

After calibration right? I mean I haven’t played competitively for 3 seasons so I’m pretty sure if my mmr wasn’t reset, it would have decayed to hell. But i still calibrated to 1899 so I think it’s possible mmr was reset. At the very least, Evan said they were ‘soft reset’.

In current system maybe, but overall if you played couple thousand of matches i doubt your MMR will decay drastically. I have quit gw2 multiple times for few months and still saw same people in matches after i came back (even before leagues were introduced).

I remember reading in a post by Evan Lesh that mmr decay was introduced since S1/2 (can’t remember which). At least for ranked.

Edit: i don’t think the number of matches played affects the rate of decay. It’s likely a fixed rate like the current system.

You can though. I finished my placement yesterday at 950 rating. Yes that’s right sub 1k.

I’m currently at 1347 rating, and I will climb into gold tomorrow and expect to get into platinum before the season ends. Climbing is entirely doable, it just takes time. People need to stop expecting to winstreak straight to legendary.

Also those people that got a lucky placement are going to have a rude awakening when the good players with bad placements start working up the board.

No offense but I think to climb from 1k to 1.5k si really easy, is like to play against Amber boys, very easy to carry.

I’d like to know strategies about moving from 1.7-1.8k+ more because sounds like the old Diamond but without Win Streaks (that was the key to climb).

And dunno why but I’ve the feeling People with 1.8k more is scared to play, a lot of players with really few games in top ladder, this makes really harder to climb for people who have a lower mmr.

It is easy to carry “Amber boys”. How so? What if those “Amber boys” are on your team and you face a group of two good players on the other team? You lose 27 points, which makes at least two wins necessary to get back to your old rating.

It’s never “easy” to get out of a division if the game wants you to carry your team while it puts good opponents on the others. It’s absolutely random. You are either lucky or you die trying for a whole season.

Yeah, that’s because you can only climb up to your skill level under the new system.
Your ability to climb is essentially a asymptotic curve whose limit is your skill level.

Unless you got placed above your skill level at which point you’re going to find yourself on the downrank train really fast.

This was my experience personally:
2-8 on placement matches, with a starting MMR of 466. On first thought, I’m terrible, which I admit is true, as Season 5 is my first serious dive into PvP. On second thought, maybe I’m placed too low, and I could slowly climb out.

Today, I played 5 matches and ended 4-1, with 583 MMR. The matches were won by a significant margin, the last of which my team severely outplayed the other.

I do feel like I’m gradually improving, and hope to at least get to Silver, and optimistically, Gold. My performance from here on out will let me gauge that.

I just feel punished for playing right after season start. With the soft reset it was playing with and against players whose true MMR was different. So the outcome of these matches were random/luck. It seems now that the system rates those first 10 matches higher than the following matches. You are basically stuck where the system has put you. Only moving slowly up or down down after placement. I guess with the huge penalty you get for not playing a few days it gets even worse. You have to play many matches to compensate it.

If you will get/loose less and less points for more matches, then the placement is critical of how grindy your progress will be. I had 6:4 placement putting me in low silver a bit below 1200 and i don´t get good teams which will lead to something like 50:50.
As soon as the MM sends one useless player into your team, you can´t carry. Hopefully this stays rare.

I really want to know how to climb in MMR.

After 4 seasons being stuck in ruby because I don’t have much time to play and couldn’t find a team to play with, now again I’m placed in Bronze division after 5 wins and 5 loses (one match counted as lost because of game disconnection and when returned to game my team won and I got 15 min dishonor).
So I got mmr of 900. It doesn’t matter I have over 4.7k matches played, I feel I’m always in the noob team. Yesterday I won two times 1v1 vs double legend warrior in the same match, (I played with my warrior) but my team had no idea of playing (the ranger with his alpine wolf).

I really love pvp but I feel really frustrated as it seems the only way for me to climb is by farming matches, and I have no time to farm.

I am curious how MMR changes based on wins and losses. How many games does it take to actually see the difference? Info from a dev (cough Evan, cough) would be nice~
From my experience so far (i have alt account) you need at least 100 ranked games to notice change in quality of players. In first 100 games or so on alt account i would just destroy anything on my way, after 100 or so games the “hard carry” games started to happen.
