Multi-classing vs. Maining
I think it’s good to give them all a fair try before deciding which to main. Both so you know which you like the most compared to the rest and so you know what to expect when fighting them.
I also think it’s good to have variety and that having more than one character you enjoy is a good way to not get sick of your main profession. For example, I rotate between my Necromancer and Engineer evenly and I play both of them daily. I consider them both effectively my mains.
Champion: Phantom, Hunter, Legionnaire, Genius
WvW rank: Diamond Colonel | Maguuma
I solo q up to legendary.
Wanted to do it on my main – Thief (Around 5700 games played – 57 % Winrate).
Gave up on that idea when i reached ruby.
Started to switch between professions as needed (Auramancer, Scrapper, Reaper, Power -Rev).
Only played thief when the enemy comp allowed it.
Worked out for me.

able to play many professions efficiently is much better than just playing one single profession only.
i used to play warrior only, mainly a warrior hotjoin hero.
then i started exploring engineer as well.
since hot and warrior is very hard to play (unless you are very very very good with warrior and your opponent is somehow not very good with dealing with warrior) so i tried playing reaper (one of the easier to play hot elite specs in my opinion) as well.
so nowadays i play dagger warhorn staff reaper, rifle flamer scrapper mainly.
been trying out druid and herald as well.
can’t really play the others well.
ele / tempest ? lowest health pool, light armor.
this is so hard to play for me.
i can’t even hotjoin with this.
thief / daredevil ? lowest health pool, medium armor.
sure if i feel like lowering my MMR in emerald and sapphire.
sometimes hotjoin for the daily profession.
guardian / dragon hunter ? lowest health pool, heavy armor.
hotjoin for the daily profession.
i might try to train my dragon hunter to be ranked worthy.
maybe for amber division in season 2.
I agree with what others have said in some ways. I think people who learn to play multiple classes competently get a much better idea of class interactions and how things compare between classes.
The people I see that play class X and only play class X are quite often very myopic and I’d say about half from what I’ve seen don’t even know their class that well often being wrong about many things.

Maybe i am a fool, because i choose the hard way by maining my main for a very long time and trying to figured out some ups and weaknesses that my profession has, same as other class/profession and i has this mentality that (which is suck) i rather play to learn by playing against others, hopefully the feeling is mutual against those people i come across with.
Some say, sharing is caring
Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.
Get game.
Pick one class, main it.
Play it until you’re bored, don’t feel like it suits you, or more interested in another.
Pick a second class, stick with it as if it were main.
If like it, main it.
Once at certain point with main, try all classes out just a little to get to know their skills and how they play. Then, return to main class, be better for it.
When opportunity presents, duel using other classes for better understanding without having to really commit anything to them.
Once at a high level, pick an alt with a play style you can work with.
Use alt when main is not good for the comp, in a weak state, or just for a change.

Basically this.
For a while, I didn’t know what any of the other class’ skill names were, but I knew the animations and effects. Once I played each one for a bit and understood the basic cooldowns and openings to abuse, life became so much easier.
I do understand you can do both but I was curious what people thought about playing several classes vs. maining and playing one all of the time…whether its more beneficial to get really really good at one class or get decent-good at several
There’s nothing stopping you from getting really good at all professions. I think there’s a huge benefit to being able to play every profession and every type of build the profession has to offer.
By multiclassing you also make your main stronger, because you know what is strong against other classes
its always good to be decent at other classes when your main class is getting nerfed
for example i had a friend that mained thief, which is kind of bad in the current meta so it was no suprise that his winrate went downhill and because he could not play any other class he stoped playing gw2 alltogether , last time he loged in was 1-2 month ago, hope he comes back when the thief is getting buffed next patch
i for example main ele but also have a decent amount of games on thief and rev, so if ele is getting nerfed next patch i will switch to thief or rev
