My “Dcent” Changes to PvP

SPVP:

I think that almost everyone can agree that hot join needs to go. This is because anything higher than 5v5 feels like a zerg fest that involves no skill, and all it does is shy people away from pvp. If arena net wants to attract more players to pvp then I feel like there should be more organization. So here are just some of the things I would change/add to pvp. So when you go to the pvp matchmaker you would see the following:

-Conquest Tab:
In this tab you would see the option to queue 5v5 for which ever map that you choose. So for example when you open up the tab you would see (5v5 Battle of Khylo queue), (5v5 Legacy of the Foefire queue), etc. The game would try to match you up with players close to your rank. This would give new players a better perspective of pvp .

-Arena Match Tab:
This would be a new game mode where you could queue up for 2v2 or 3v3 arena type play. In this game mode you are only given one life, and the goal is to defeat the enemy team. Surely arena net will need to implement new maps to support this game mode, or cut off sections of their current maps.

-Capture the Flag:
I think everyone knows what this game mode is like so I don’t really need to explain it. But I believe this game mode should be 10v10. You might think this would be a zerg fest. To avoid this maps would have to be very large, maybe 2 or 3 times as large as the current maps.

Spectating Tab:
Here you would be able to watch conquest, arena matches, and capture the flag.

-Dueling Tab:
Now I know many players like dueling their friends and such for obvious reasons and the current dueling servers that people make are great. But it’s time to organize it a little more. In this tab you would see a list of servers that would send you into a large dueling arena. Once in the arena you would be able to send duel request to players.

-Private Server Tab:
This tab is for custom arenas. Here you can construct your own matches however you please. The only catch is playing here will not award you rank or glory.

TPVP:

As for tournament pvp the only real issue here is the division of solo queue and group queue, beside from that I don’t think there are many more complaints. So when you talk to the tpvp match maker you should see something like this:

-Conquest Tab:
The difference between this tab and the one in spvp is that you will not be able to select which map you would like to participate in. These maps include the current tournaments maps, meaning raid of the Capricorn will never be selected.

-Build Template:
` Since you never know which map you are going to be in, I think it would be fair to give players the option to switch builds on the fly right before the match. I know arena net has been discussing this, so I am not going to elaborate.

-Arena Match Tab:
Not much of a different between this one and the spvp one. The difference being the chest rewards you get from winning and leaderboards.

Rewards:

Now there are a multitude of things that arena net could do to improve the reward system. Here are just some of my ideas.

-Gear:
They should add a new vender where you can buy pvp sets with glory. These sets however are pvp exclusive gear that has a legendary feel to them. For example maybe there is a set that makes your character look like they’re on fire or something like that. Also the pvp version of legendary weapons should be able to be purchased for A LOT of glory.
Another idea I had was for this to all be tied to new achievements instead of glory farm.

-Miscellaneous:
New class finishers could be added to be bought for glory, or possibly something you would purchase from the gem store.

I really like these ideas. The only one I am not sold on is TPvP supported Arenas. I like the addition of 10v10 capture the flag and 2v2 or 3v3 Arenas, but as long as professions are balanced around a core pvp mode of conquest I am uncertain as to whether any additional modes should be emphasized beyond for the pure enjoyment of it/privately hosted tournaments.

I really like this because it reverts conquest to the 5v5 it is balanced for and yet you can still get all your zerg in via 10v10 capture the flag. Even with a much bigger map you could still obtain that “protection of the horde” feel. When you want to practice more specific skill sets you have dueling and arena options; which in the end help to hone your skills for conquest. Conquest still has that primary sPvP mode feel to it, but these other options open up a world of possibilities to cater to additional potential pvpers.

I like everything here, but I don’t think it’s a matter of ANet not being aware of these feedback – rather, they simply need more time to implement them.

I do like hot joins, though. I do them all the time while waiting for tournament queue’s to pop (and filter for 5v5’s only, of course)

“Hotjoin needs to go. Anything over 5 vs 5 feels zergish.” Anet has already responded to this. Hotjoin is 8 vs 8 because it is an arena type where players can come and go. If it is was 5 vs 5 and team lost a player, the advantage now heavily favours the full team.

Capture the flag being 10 vs 10. So once a player has captured the flag, what do the other 9 do? escort them back to base? What does the opposition do?..gank the flag bearer? This mode only invites true zerging and particle pollution. What happens if you hold the flag and are a thief? can you stealth?..can you shortbow teleport? Too many variables that could favour or strongly kitten many profession builds.

Dueling arena. These already exist. If you want to duel, there is plenty of free servers with no players that can be used. Anet has already admitted that the thief is, by design meant to be the strongest profession at 1 vs 1 encounters and meant, by design, to be able to control the pace of the duel. When one profession has so heavily been designed to excel at 1 vs 1 why commit to dueling? Before the arena has even been created there is a profession that already will excel at it more than others.

Being matched with people near your rank level. This is fine for rank0-30. However what about those rank45+ The amount of rank needed to achieve that level is greater than the combined rank to achieve ranks 0 to 30. Are there 10 rank 42-49 players able to play at given time? Eventually people will be needed to fill out the ranks. What if those same needed people aren’t interested in playing that game mode?..this highlights that although a good idea..it is not particularly viable.

Rewards..well, I am not entirely sure how the current reward system was designed and how it was thought fit to reward players. All I can say is that i remember when I went from rank 26 to 27, the chest I got was 3 dolyak finishers and a glory booster. I remember that clearly because I felt that was perhaps the worst reward I have ever seen given. So far in all my pvp experience (1800 points off ransacker.) I have not once used a finisher, or do I see others using them regularly. So yeah, rewards don’t give a sense of reward.

Some of your suggestions I disagree with, some I agree with.

- Hotjoin; face it, it is here to stay. ArenaNet has already commented why it is here, and why it will continue to be 8v8. Personally, I enjoy hotjoin when I just want to play 3 matches and get my PvP daily, it is quick and fun, no commitment.

- Adding new game modes sounds great on paper, but the PvP population is too small to support it at this point in time. Hold off on new game modes, and instead focus on giving players incentive to PvP, giving people a reason to PvP.

- Speaking of incentive, love the suggestions on purchasing PvP gear for Glory via a merchant, really like the idea of having armor and weapon skins that are PvP ONLY, and think class specific PvP finishers is a pretty sweat idea too.

All in all, I think ArenaNet needs to focus on:
- A working solo-queue.
- Giving people incentives to PvP.
