NA Tournament of Legends - Discussion Thread
The interest in this tournament feels incredibly low, and forced. It’s a real shame.
Highlights of ToL day 2:
-KPz pregame formation and Reevz emoting (+1 for Reevz not being an asura)
-Supcutie being stuck in the terrain (GG anet thanks for caring!)
-Being kicked out of the custom arena multiple times (again GG anet!)
Zulu Ox Tactics [zulu]

THe game should not be allow teleporting through walls, up to the roof to begin with. In fact, they should be punished (stuck) whenever they do so. It is just abuse of terrain and cheesy as hell. Teleports should only work when you have LOS on your target.
While I can appreciate all the work that went into making this tournament. It just pretty much highlighted everything wrong in pvp.
An extremely boring meta with Asuras.
Game breaking bugs and server crashes.
Rewards somewhat lacking, so teams (or individual) don’t feel the need to play.
Heavens Rage
kindof the point, I am not there for damage but to stay alive, drop cc’s and keep healing. I had no idea there was a similar role in PvP.
Staff Bunker Elem is actually a new thing in SPvP after 15th April Patch.

Good eles saw it coming from a mile away. Bad eles still think its trash b/c just smashing buttons off cd gets them killed. People will still call for “buffs” to the prof. b/c they just can’t figure out how to play it.
Salute to those participant who put their Team and Name shame for the sake of how bad the current Pvp is. i do not blame them cos that is how conquest works, now who says you need a proper rotation in our current game mode?
It is up too you now Team Arena, make those shavings more frequent. you have all the DATA and Resource now
Between a master and apprentice, i would love to see the differences.
Number of asurans each team had, stopped counting near the end;
Team Teamwork – 3
Obeesity – 3
Snow Money – 4
kPz – 3
No Good Intentions – 3
Angelic Synergy – 3
Elusive – 1
We are Mad Decent – 4
Good Fights – 2
Out Played – 5
Please end the asuran bias in sPvP.

I watched both EU and NA TOL and enjoyed both. I think the differences were evident to most everyone that watched. I also liked that they weren’t mirror images of each other and a very different type of team came out on top between the two tournaments.
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all that put forth the time and effort to make it happen.
I enjoyed ToL so muchhhhhh!
EU ToL was so good, even the salt haha. The Ready Up stream afterwards was the funniest. I’m a decent fighter on my own, but that interview let me know I need to work on communication the most and not biting off more than I can chew. Their tactics felt like real esports. I hope the winning team can come out to the states for an exhibition at least!
The NA ToL was great but shorter haha. really enjoyed the commentary, but I was sad that Good Fights lost. Five Gauge is such an inspirational engi, but I don’t think his build works very well versus warriors currently. I wonder if he had to deal with a lot of lag as it seemed like a lot of his usual tactics were missing by a bit. Maybe I just want to make excuses since I like him so much.
Anyway much love to Mistpedia, the commentators, ArenaNet and DPS for putting together such a great and strong even. Please don’t pay much attention to the doom and gloom, all that read this. It was a great tournament. I need more jebrocasting though! Maybe next ToL!
Sorry, Anet, but you can’t artificially generate interest in this game’s sPvP.
Yeah only 2,500+ were concurrent today. No interest.
I used to run the Academy Gaming tournaments for GW2.

Yeah only 2,500+ were concurrent today. No interest.
That number does look encouraging, and the EU tourny last week had over 3,500 but I have to ask. How many of those were connected just for the precursor giveaways and how many actually had an interest in the actual tournament or PvP?
“…let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die;.”
Sorry, Anet, but you can’t artificially generate interest in this game’s sPvP.
Yeah only 2,500+ were concurrent today. No interest.
Just out of curiosity sake I googled “league of legends twitch channel” opened the first one that came up, it was just some kid playing the game in no special tournament or anything and it had 34,000+ watching.
3000 (which is what I saw it peak at) for the biggest event in awhile with really expensive item giveways is indeed pretty much zilch in terms of interest.
As long as everyone is playing a midget whose attack effects don’t actually show what they’re hitting, particle effects flood every fight, the game still disconnects everyone randomly, a “top” team cheats and then ragequits, a game in the finals includes someone getting stuck in geometry, and the commentary is gibberish (“they’re like walking into a brick wall while sitting the wrong way”) when it isn’t flat out wrong (how many times did an ele mist form and the caster said he was down?), I don’t see this changing.
Oh and fix the balance so that pvp has actual fights in it. Watching a bunch of bunkers play whack a mole with their own hp bars isn’t exactly edge of your seat stuff.
We could just remove zerker stance.
Then once again condi < tank < burst < condi.
It is a toxic skill which hurts intended balance.

League is popular because it’s simple. People can understand simple games easier so they get more involved and invested in them.
I used to run the Academy Gaming tournaments for GW2.
…And this game isn’t simple?
^Spammin’ is hard, ok.
Sorry, Anet, but you can’t artificially generate interest in this game’s sPvP.
I don’t think they got the memo.
Also, gg to Cheap Fights for rolling with bug abuse on a streamed tourny. A sound call to make, no doubt~
The Ele build is crazy, so tanky it looks unkillable in 1vs1.
Sadly, these forum fights are much more entertaining than the final matches themselves.
League of legends is more popular because it is more balanced (lol) and because the skill cap is much much much higher
So were can I watch the NA ToL?
Was this tournament pure Condi’s like people in the other subsection predicted?
Actually condis were snapped over the knee of the strongest support comp against them that I’ve ever seen
Just caught the vid. Grats to Blu and Sireph for trying to squeeze excitement out of the snooze fest that was the Apex-KPz final. Won by a group of mechanically good individual players running the safest self-sustaining cheeze imaginable. No need for any fancy-schmanzy team play, just keep those three points contested and rotate a healing ele or guard in as needed. Attrition baby! Props for ruthless pragmatism but not for manliness.
Oh, and US beats EU hands down in forum PvP. US ego goes to 11.
Legend S1-S3 with 100% solo queue 100% conquest
Filthy casual, 6k sPvP games
League is popular because it’s simple. People can understand simple games easier so they get more involved and invested in them.
And it is free2play.
There are an huge number of prepubescent kids, dyehard pirates and extreme casuals who won’t spend a single penny on a game a priori, which is an pretty high barrier for an e-sport game.
Other than Call of Duty or any other console e-sport joke, not a single e-sport game can match the popularity of League or DotA because of the B2P barrier.
The only two B2P serious and fairly popular e-sport games I can think are Counter-Strike and Starcraft, which both are on the market 10x longer then GW2 and are nowhere as popular as League or DotA.
The idea that people from one part of the world are better on average at a video game is ludicrous at best. Taking the game more seriously, spending more time playing it, and having teams together longer does not equal more innate ability at the game. In a strange way N/A should be respected because we realize this game isn’t worth putting much effort at all into. I guess when you have the welfare state minding you 24/7 some Euros have plenty of time to waste on bland games with almost no incentive to excel. Most of us in America have better things to do.

If ANet went f2p they’d need to massively expand their support. They’d be handing out bans 5x more often than they do now, the abuse would be crazy. I can just imagine how quickly people would be able to grab black lion keys with a bot and craploads of accounts.

They can just make F2P the PvP part of the game just for the sake of e-sports.
F2P accounts can’t gain gold, can’t sell things on TP etc.
They can just play the game and unlock skins in the wardrobe.
Then, as most likely happens when people get involved in a game, a lot of them will spend money and eventually buy the game to enjoy it fully.
No issues, no problems, lots of money, lots of esportz.

Laughing at the idea that people from one part of the world are better on average at a video game.. And then coming up with the idea that due to the Welfare State, Euros on average don’t have much better to do – all in the same breath.
Impressive deduction, lol.

trust me, A LOT of NA players have disdain for our “best” players/teams and what became of the NA ToL- it’s not just a EU thing.
EU was really a much better display of what this game’s PvP “esports” should look more like, not NA’s talentless snoozefest that was won largely on the merit of riskless team comps and lethargic wars of attrition.
can we ask a scrim between Apex vs TCG?
I really want to see it.
Choose your words carefully, who are you to say what anything should look like? Talentless? Riskless? Don’t bother to mention NO ONE changed builds after losing to apex or kpz. If anything pvp in this game should
have constant build switching to better deal with your opponent, introduce counter play via build swapping but no one does this they just rather fail repeatedly and then blame the opponents comp on being cheese.
I rather enjoyed watching kpz and apex go at it with similar comps as any mistake on either side meant failure.
I couldn’t sit through EU as it was tons of zerker/conditions spam, fights were over as soon as they started. Even saw a complete zerk necro running wells who was dead for the majority of the match. Very uninteresting.
I like my long drawn out boxing matches where fights are determined by skill and not by how fast you can take somone out.

wait wait…
I’m sorry I dont understand you..are you saying a condi comp lost?!
It seems like a lot of people missed the months and months of time where condis were just non-existent in PvP.

It almost seems like everyone was anticipating condis and made really resilient bunker builds so half the teams ended up coming to the dance wearing the same dress. That or like in the EU tourney nobody wanted to mess around with their comp too much. I’m sure there’s still some as-of-yet undiscovered super OP combination that we’ll have to deal with for the next 6 months.

So they lost…
It seems US teams like rolling a lot tankier, compared to the “superior rotation” strats that top EU teams have.
It’s a shame we don’t see more EU style comps.
It used to be like this in WoW Arenas too.
NA would try to win by outcomping the enemy and finding a new FotM while EU teams would tend to prefer playing whatever worked for them and be less eager about chasing the next FotM.

Surprisingly… I agree. The game isn’t in a competitive enough state to make players do this though. The best teams in the game don’t practice 6-7 days a week like professionals in other games do and we sure as hell don’t take it nearly as seriously. This is because the game isn’t rewarding enough right now. I think when more tournaments roll out and there is a reason to practice more and stick with the same team for more than three weeks, then you will see teams get more serious.

Yes, but don’t worry. The people who keep thinking condis are OP will still ignore all evidence of the contrary and keep clamoring for all condition builds to burn at the stake.
Note
Ban Asura as a race in further tournaments.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. We are very much interested in making the tournament better for the next round, and we’ll take a lot of this stuff into consideration for our planning. We have a running list of places to improve on.

Yeah only 2,500+ were concurrent today. No interest.
You do realise those numbers are greatly inflated because of the precursor give away.?
The give-aways made it impossible to read any feedback on the match as it was going. In fact, I missed half of the coverage in the last fight (the good one), because I was ADDing on the chat that I wasn’t even a part of.

We are preparing the prize lists now, and will be reaching out to the teams who have prize options for your choices when ready.
I will post again when emails go out so team captains know when to check their inboxes.
Will the legendaries be account bound or can they be sold in the TP?
Can anyone list the music they were using on the stream please quite liked a few of the songs :-) thanks
note: considering top teams used exploits of bugs trough out the tournament. my opinion on tpvp is confirmed.
Next time just hold a lottery.
