Hey,
we know the single Stronghold map was ready at the beginning of last summer when we beta-tested it. When the Stronghold “gamemode” for the expansion was announced as “compete against other guilds” we expected a GvG mode inside the pvp rules system, a sort of 10v10 Guild Wars 1 style GvG.

Turned out it all turned back on itself, and became just a 5v5 pvp map with a different set of rules, instead of a new game mode with more players and more maps. There is no guild ranking either unless that’s what the league is supposed to be.

So now 6 months later can we ask again? Is there anything else planned for PvP? I mean Team Deathmatch has been removed, underwater combat has been removed, teams are still just 5v5, and the expansion only had 1 map.

Personally after 3 years I was expecting more than just 1 map with the expansion. When you have the gameplay mechanics down in the production tools how complicated is it to hire teams of artists to design more maps? Can we expect more than 1 map every 2 years now that HoT is out?

Not just new modes they need bigger conquest maps with more nodes and 10-15 players per team. More players would help combat the bunker meta.

There’s this underwater area in hotm, never noticed it before so i don’t know how long it’s been open. There’s underwater golem dummies there, so maybe an underwater map soon?

There was a map with underwater combat the first year the game was released. They removed it completely (and it was quite fun).

Don’t count on it.
Underwater combat has been broken for a looooong time.

Them suddenly fixing it is unlikely.

they could make a CDI with ideas for new conquest maps so that stuff like skyhammer/spirit watch won’t happen again.

they could even brainstorm ideas and ask the community what we find best.

they could create beta maps and let us test them, just like they did with stronghold.. even if it’s just placeholder objects as long as the actual map mechanic works.

and they could obviously remodel stronghold to proper GvG.

Ex player of PeanutButterJellyTime, Heavenly Annoying and Visceral Gaming.

The answer is that GW2 is an MMO and the sPvP side of the game has always been a side-line feature. By design, it’s something for the PvE crowd or WvW crowd to come and do when they get bored. That may be sound harsh, but it’s absolute true. The crowd that loves popular PvP games like LoL or DOTA2, they aren’t likely to commit to a 30+GB download for the GW2 client only to PvP. So we get new features sprinkled in but sPvP in GW2 is always designed around catering to it’s biggest audience which is the PvE and WvW crowd who approach PvP more casually than most.

So…

Having said that the play mechanics of GW2 lends itself to be the best action oriented third-person PvP available. It’s worthy of it’s own title. I hope ArenaNet is looking at LoL and DOTA2 and how much money these games are making, how popular they are on Twitch and that they take the GW2 combat engine, combine it with a some other new things and let it be reborn as a much smaller client positioned exclusively for PvP play. If they did that you would see a lot of interest. In fact I would wager if done correctly and we get proper balance of the skills, a few new death match maps, a few new MOBA style maps, solo and premade queue split, League still progression all the time with some special “in season” ranking and tournaments, ability to replay past matches in client… If they match feature for feature where the bar currently is at and just take it a bit above that they would have a phenomenal success. A PvP game that could easily transition the new flagship product for ArenaNet.

Until we get a separate client for PvP it will never get the love and respect it deserves. PvP is a huge market. It’s what everyone on Twitch is watching. But you’re not going to get there when gamers have to download a huge MMO client just to get to the PvP in your game. They are going to assume the game studio’s focus is PvE (and they’re right to assume that). A client devoted to PvP paired with a team of resources who listen to community and fix a lot of these problems prior to go-live would be a huge financial win for ArenaNet and NCSoft. It would boost popularity around the world.

They really need to make deathmatch a mode and make more maps, heck smaller maps like Temple and Skyhammer could be used as DM as is without the points and secondary mechanics.

I would much rather see a couple of new conquest maps than a new mode. Stronghold is not any good in my opinion and I can’t see another mode being better than conquest in gw2. I was thinking maybe a HoT themed map (maybe a tarir themed map, or even adapt the 3 blighting towers in dragons stand and use them as capture points). I would love to see gliding be a thing in new maps as well, of course the mastery would not be required for this.
