Hey everyone,

New player here. I wont bore you guys with the same question that noobies seems to ask: Which profession is the most op? Obviously I know the answers.

However, I’ve been doing some research on a lot of different things in regards to professions, but to no avail. Most of the sources that are online are from 2-3 years ago where the professions were a lot different.

So can anyone give a noobie a rundown on the classes for the pvp/wvw scenario?
I understand that a warrior/guardian is a tank. Elementalists are used to stand behind lines and do dps and stuff.

But I am wondering, which class has the most potential in pvp? and for wvw? Like if you held the best items in the game, which class would be able to contribute the most to the fight? (each class has its benefits and I am wondering what are the roles and benefits of each class…. not just oh hey warriors have the most armor and vitality…)

more like (choosing a warrior allows one to be in control of the battle. they are the leaders who direct the team towards the enemy because they are the first to engage in a fight. they are good when paired up with….. and are effective at leading attacks because of their high durability)
just information with deeper insight basically.

I generally like to run classes that require alot of skill and knowledge of the game, but offer the most reward for their playstyle. Hence, I am leaning towards the elementalist bcuz of the awareness needed to play him, but I do like the idea of being able to cast shattering damage to an approaching enemy/squad

but I would like to hear your guys opinions on how each profession works in high level pvp. and wvw.

Thanks

Cele D/D Ele, due to sustain and ability to still deal damage.
Cele Rifle Engi, due to mobility and versality (kits), loads of cc.
Thief due to damage, mobility and stealth.

Also those are three the most cheesy ones.

Go ranger.

Lots of tanky meta players, ranger is best at bursting them down.
Also, good mobility too, so decapping is easy.
Also, good for team fights.
1v1 is good too.

Tell me how Ranger is good in ‘bursting’ tanky meta, when Ranger job is to hunt down squishies.
Tell me how Ranger mobility is good compared to Thief or Mesmer.
Tell me how Ranger is sooo good in 1v1 against competent people?

Always the Ranger mains who think their class is bad when it’s one of the easiest classes in the game much like Guardian.

Ranger has 10 million evades and protection on dodge. They have an easy time baiting dodges with pet and their selves in general.

Just one of the easiest classes in the game, that’s all there is.

Most of time, there are no squishes, nothing but tanks, that’s why you use a ranger.

self explainatory, just win, they have a lot of good stuff, pretty underrated right now if you ask me, plus not many classes have a nice knockback like they do, even more reason why to go ranger

All you need to really focus on is longbow 2 and 4. use 5 during cooldowns. use gs 3 to run away and decap nodes and gs4 to block attacks.

Speaking of squishies. If I’m 1v1ing someone and I know they squishy, I’d play my medi guard.
If I know they a tanky class, I’d go ranger.

With tanky meta. You should go ranger. Only reason why I still play medi guard is because all those rowdy rough talkers play squishies and I enjoy destroying them.

Both Power Rangers and Medi Guards aren’t competitive builds.
Ninja edit: Well Medi-Hammer Guards are sometimes played, however their role is completly different than GS ones.

Before even more bias/drama kick in( it will, trust me), let us clarify few points:
There is no class with “most potential”, it’s the player that makes the class, smart choices are what bring in the victory, you can run any build you want but in the end of the day this is a 5vs5 game. Each profession plays differently, they all have strengths and weaknesses, some are great burst, some are great tanks and other offer the best control.

Rangers have one of the best condi build in the game, that one works quite well against tanks which are resistant to burst dmg
Outside of duelling rooms, the 1vs1 you speak of….rarely happen, a ranger can be an excellent point holder, he can hold long enough for help to come, not everything is about 1vs1, at the end of the day…….the team that reach 500 pts win

Necro is much better…

Not as good as any proper node holder like D/D Ele, Shoutbow etc.

Ofc it’s not. However if you want Ranger to do something, other class will do it better. Probably with exception of condi Spirit Ranger, which is barely played anymore since it’s not good in this meta with so much aoe cleanses.

Edit: You go to tournament with selected team, you can have any composition and you can handpick ANY players. Why would you pick Ranger?

Necro might be better in a teamfight where their stuff is AoE. But in a 1v1, rangers can stack bleed like nothing else in this game. Its a bit ridiculous actually.

Hi, OP. Welcome to the game!

Supreme is spot on. All the professions are good! As far as which ones are overpowered, this changes constantly. I wouldn’t pick a main profession based on the current meta at any point in time.

Elementalist sounds fitting for your goals – just experiment and play what feels fun to you. Ele has been a very strong part of the meta in all three game modes lately, but this wasn’t always the case. And it may not be the case in the future. That’s not what’s important though, liking your character is.

Ele isn’t always just a strong damage dealer. They can “tank” in their own right, offer loads of team support, or focus on burst damage. Just depends on your build and how you choose to play. They’re quite versatile. All the professions are, but ele stands out to me as one of the most versatile professions, along with engineer.

Keep in mind that you start the game with 5 character slots. Don’t be afraid to use them all. You can always delete a character if you don’t like it and don’t want to spend gems on additional slots.

First of all: Welcome to the game! Secondly: WvW and PvP are two different worlds. WvW is open world PvP with PvE gear and stats. In PvP all stats are normalized and everyone has access to the same gear, runes, sigils and traits. In other words: PvP is about personal skill and build, not the best gear.

Since this is the PvP forum I’ll do a quick rundown of the professions for PvP.

Thief you can go for sustained damage with lots of evades for survivability or burst damage with stealth and blinds as survivability. Your main job is to +1 fights and roam the map. You target squishies or enemies with low health to dispatch them quicky and let your team do the mop up while you bolt off to somewhere else. Unparalleled mobility.

Elementalist
Ele has become a real jack of all trades. Sustained damage, good survivability and excellent team support. You can also choose to build them for support or pure damage.

Mesmer
This is imo one of the most difficult professions to play properly. Managing clones, shatters, positioning and the low health pool can prove to be really hard. But oh the damage! Brings good team support with AoE stealth, group teleport and quickness.

Ranger
I stay way over here and just nuke you down. Very high damage and decent survivability. Very dependent on good positioning to do anything. Have decent survivability and can be a real asset when played right.

Necromancer
Conditions or power. Powemancers can wreck an entire team if not dealt with quickly. Same with conditionmancers really. Tend to die very fast to enemy thieves and require extremely good positioning to work!

Engineer
Can be very hard to kill if played properly. Tons of aoe damage and control. Very good on-point. Haven’t played engi too much, so haven’t much more to say really :/

Warrior
I’ll smash your face! Literally. Good damage, both AoE and single target. Very hard to kill unless focused down or countered. Haven’t played too much warrior either…

Guardian
The bunker profession. You can build for survivability and team support that is simply unparalleled! You can also build for very high burst damage.

Hope this helped! Good luck and enjoy the game man!

Melder – Thief

I generally like to run classes that require alot of skill and knowledge of the game, but offer the most reward for their playstyle. Hence, I am leaning towards the elementalist bcuz of the awareness needed to play him, but I do like the idea of being able to cast shattering damage to an approaching enemy/squad

I can’t speak for WvW, but you sound like one of these classes/builds:

Elementalist

  1. D/D Celestial
    1. Master of all. Your challenge is to squeeze every bit of OPness this build has out of it, from supporting allies to killing enemies to rotating quickly because you’re so fast.
    2. Difficulty: 7/10 (lots of skills and rotations to learn)
  2. S/F Burst
    1. Instant bursts. Your challenge is to kill everything you can with stupidly strong bursts while not getting killed yourself.
    2. Difficulty: 9/10 (Burst is hard to pull off, staying alive can be tricky)

Mesmer

  1. Shatter
    1. The ultimate mesmer. Set up your clones and spikes right and you can pull off some scary bursts. A well placed portal can totally screw up the enemy team. This is the hardest build I’ve mentioned so far. You have to play super careful, especially when everyone else plays something easier than you.
    2. Difficulty: 10/10 (staying alive is hard, bursts can be hard to time sometimes)

Thief

  1. Dagger/Pistol Backstabber
    1. Ganker. Jump into battles, gank someone, get out. Your biggest asset is your ability to get in and get out. This build can travel over 2k range instantly if you blow enough stuff.
    2. Difficulty: 8/10 (knowing when to go in is hard, sometimes landing your hits can be tricky)

Ranger

  1. Power Ranger
    1. This build is easy to use at max range and a challenge at close range. Super high damage, super annoying to play against, at least until you manage to get up on it.
    2. Difficulty: 6/10 (the 6 points come from melee range fights. Pew pewing at range is simple and fun)

Engineer

  1. Celestial Engineer
    1. High damage and heavy CC. Your job is to kill everything with explosions.
    2. Difficulty: 7/10

All of those builds are challenging to run at max level. Some of them have a lower skill floor and thus will be harder to get into, but in the end can be just as effective. I know how to run all of them, so if you need some help feel free to message me in game (Raine Avina).
