Deathmatch as a mode is still feasible, that map wasn’t the best setup for it, or at least to me it seemed too small for that game mode. Double its size and that might have changed it up.
Yeah, I really feel they just didn’t put any work into that map. Compared to other maps, it’s just so plain. And it is way to small. Death match can still work, they just have to get more creative with the map.
Deathmatch also needs to be round based.

To be fair the main problem with courtyard is that it requires a different set up.You cannot play the same builds as in the other maps. For example, with the meta of the time, it was an awful map for thief or mesmers. In general, all 1v1 and roamer builds won’t do that well.
If we had the choice (like currently conquest/stronghold) and build templates, the map would have worked much better.
Finally, I didn’t really enjoy the design of courtyard while I liked the game mode.
I think that the problem largely boiled down to people being dragged into courtyard when they didn’t want to be. This could be a problem when there were daily achievements that assumed you were playing Conquest, while there were also some players who hated it so much that if they got it, they would feed the enemy team in hope of just getting it over and done with ASAP.
If it was something you could opt out of like Stronghold, I think it would be much better received.

More conquest is a yawn. A new gametype might get me to come back to spvp but not this.

It’s a classic catch-22 scenario. The PvP community as a whole doesn’t like it because there’s not an established meta like for Conquest. There isn’t an established meta because no tournaments are played on Stronghold. No tournaments are played on Stronghold because the PvP community as a whole doesn’t like it…
Because not enough PVE players did make something serious about Stronghold.
The PVP community is so small, that you can’t have soloq and teamq separated.

So… for general review of the new map…
I don’t see it as anything very special however I don’t mind it. It reminds me of a dumbed down version of Spirit Watch but with a more open map like FoeFire. In general, this map does not force a change in strategy or playstyle. When it comes to the entire random choice map cycle, I don’t feel much of a “break in page” when playing from the new map and going to the old ones. Just feels the same. I like maps like Kyhlo which has a interesting setup which can be used to advantage or disadvantage in strategy. It just gives more options. I also have more appreciation for Court Yard thrown into the randomized map picks because it really did offer something very different which is refreshing. I liked having the traditional options like Forrest, Foefire and Kyhlo but with the maps that forced a different playstyle mixed in… such as Spirit Watch, Sky hammer, Courtyard. The Colosseum to me is just boring.

Courtyard was my favorite map. Straight chaotic gameplay, no bunker build to take advantage of the “stand in circle” game mode. If only they could have made more TDM maps and bigger ones.
One change I would make to coliseum: make the central control point much bigger.
You have this huge central platform with a teeny tiny control point in the middle, so you often end up with a huge battle raging all over the platform that doesn’t effect the control point at all Would be interesting if you had to control that whole platform to get that control point instead of just one spot on it.
