Saw it on stream. The design looks very nice. Not sure about the secondary mechanics. Good thing is that if they are way too strong, the devs can decrease the stat boosts. The map won’t need a complete redesign to fix problems lol.

I love the crowd thing. The idea of a coliseum and playing “in public” is awesome. Now, relocate the map to The Queen’s Arena in Divinity’s Reach and let the actual Tyrian public watch the matches.

That could be a huge draw for pvp.

Couple more details

  • Standard 3 point capture map with 2 artifacts on the side of the map.
  • Offensive Artifact – Give your team 20% damage (both physical and condi). Wielder of the artifact summons a reaper that automatically stomp any downed enemy players unless they get rallied first.
  • Defensive Artifact is called Shield of Life, give entire team 5000 HP and 100 Toughness. Wielder of the Artifact get 1 free rez when they go down.
  • PvP is about capturing that glory, and Coliseum adds to that theme.
  • There is a crowd mechanic – crowds will cheer/jeer whenever someone get stomped, rallied, artifact captured etc. Adds a bit more immersion/moral support.
  • They want see player reaction to two side buffs that open at the same time – do you commit 1 player to each, 2 to each? How do you retain map control? No dominant strategy has prevailed in the playtesting.
  • One of the differences between this map and other maps is that secondary objectives like artifacts do not immediately give you team score. While you may be able to get the artifact, you still need to capitalize on that buff with your team before you can make use of it.
  • More open area around the midpoint, will be interesting to see how players maintain line of sight while staying on the points.
  • What really define this map is that the buffs are incredibly strong. They are curious to see what influence it will have on competitive play.

To be fair the main problem with courtyard is that it requires a different set up.You cannot play the same builds as in the other maps. For example, with the meta of the time, it was an awful map for thief or mesmers. In general, all 1v1 and roamer builds won’t do that well.

If we had the choice (like currently conquest/stronghold) and build templates, the map would have worked much better.

Finally, I didn’t really enjoy the design of courtyard while I liked the game mode.

People stopped playing the map because it was loads of fun for certain classes and premades. To make a mode like that fun, someone has to be stomped hard and repeatedly.

Pretty soon, people get tired of that.

I once told the Sail Commodore of our local club, " Yeah it’s great that ( another sailor ) wins every race. What good will it be to be the top when no one else comes to race though?" That class is no longer sailed at that club, for lack of interest.

I feel like we need 2 more non-conquest maps then put them together with stronghold and courtyard queue, that’d provide alternative game mode that many players have been asking for. Keep on dwelling on conquest only feels like another form of content drought. Essentially you’re still doing the same thing just a little different side objectives, and meta is unlikely to be different no matter how many conquest maps you pump out.

Sounds really interesting, Like Temple, you need to spend resources to get the buff but you’re not immediatly rewarded, you need to capitalize the buff advantage winning or not losing the fight.

Dunno how much the buff stays but numbers can be tweaked/balanced so it’s not really a problem.

I heard the map is really open, really few spot to kite and JP so professions with teleport will have good advantages here in a TOP tier skill level (when people know how to kite).

We’ll see, I think is a general interesting concept.

I don’t see a huge problem with this. It wasn’t the map that was broken but ANet’s build of it. That could just mean that it didn’t work because it wasn’t in the game where it was designed to be used. ANet’s private servers are not the game servers. It’s probably just that restrictions in the game servers have alrdy been incorporated into the map, which makes it harder to run in ANet’s own servers because of clashing issues with the relatively larger freedom in ANet’s servers.

Take that with a grain of salt, but the gist of it is that I’m not particularly worried about it not working in the showcase.

I appreciate the hard work Anet is outing into this, but I’m just not excited about this. I played the other Capricorn new map about 5-10 times and it just feels similar to other conquest maps (the underwater version was more unique) and in general the game mode is too limited/repetitive.

I’ve been wanting a 10v10 or 15v15 GvG mode since launch, not more conquest. We need something new and game changing.

Indeed. We need something game changing. But… concerning 4 years of silence (since release) anything is better than nothing, even if that means broken and unbalanced. We can chill, relax and have fun. Sometimes I think consumers have more passion for virtual products than creators.

In my opinion this game is still a game because consumers love it, just like a moldy bread is still a bread if consumer is hungry.

The lesson they learned from you guys is to not risk their investments in a new game mode only to have the players refuse to play on it. It’s safer for them to just make new conquest maps. Less recourses and less risk.

Are you serious?! Where is that failed attempt? Where is the failed try?!

In 4 years players received only 1 (one) new game mode: Stronghold. And that is not for players, but just a small attempt to access and try MOBA market with an MMO. However, it’s still a game mode and, believe it or not, many players actually liked it and still play it (if you do not believe me, activate it and see it’s queue time for yourself).

@Kuya.6495, our argument is not valid. There is no history of such a high risk put into PvP. As for rewards, everything they thrown… players liked it and consumed everything (even old Skyhammer or old Capricorn).

Their safe approach only gets them 4000 twitch viewer on average for a $200,000 dollars tournament. Some sort of breakthrough is needed.

Deathmatch game mode is fine, courtyard as a tight map that promotes spamming AoE is not. Also based your argument on forum qq posts is not logical, people don’t usually come to forum to show gratitude, let along GW2 ones. Yet queue time for stronghold is fine, indicating there are certain amounts of playerbase there.

we have 8 classes, so i would prefer 8 vs 8, but since boons are 5 man party limit ic where those 10 come, still would be a good number, and if the gamemode is an adaptation of the old gvg scene the better.

Yeah, I really feel they just didn’t put any work into that map. Compared to other maps, it’s just so plain. And it is way to small. Death match can still work, they just have to get more creative with the map.

Love to see a dual capture the flag mode, 2 flags, one on each side. Flag carriers have limited skills and no speed boosts. Need to capture the enemy flag and run it back to your base to score, multiple caps required to win. If yours is stolen kill the carrier and run it back to your base. Points for flag captures and kills. With having dual flags players need to be decide attack or defend. Players that like the objective style games have something to focus on, people that are in it for the kills also have a role, and people that like to take/hold or defend have a bit for them as well.

It’s a classic catch-22 scenario. The PvP community as a whole doesn’t like it because there’s not an established meta like for Conquest. There isn’t an established meta because no tournaments are played on Stronghold. No tournaments are played on Stronghold because the PvP community as a whole doesn’t like it…

Didn’t play WoW but yes if its like that. I enjoyed this style of game mode from the Halo series and as a youth in RL (without the killing part of course).

Queue both Stronghold and Conquest. During play times get a regular pop on both. There’s not much feedback on SH because the people playing it, are well, playing it versus posting. Those don’t like it don’t have to set a foot in it. The check boxes worked rather well, no since in making people play a mode they don’t like. Hope if we get other modes in the future the check box options are expanded on.

Didn’t play WoW but yes if its like that. I enjoyed this style of game mode from the Halo series and as a youth in RL (without the killing part of course).

Yeah in WoW it is pretty much exactly how you described, except the flag holder still has access to skills and what not (which is a bad idea since some classes are god mode when it comes to carrying a flag). But really, CTF mechanics are already in the game on the Spirit Watch map. Now Anet just needs to expand on the orb capture mechanic from Spirit Watch, give it a nice map, some pretty flag animations, tweak out some details, and we’d have a new game mode!

I personally don’t mind stronghold. I find it kinda fun actually. That said more conquest maps will be received better than a new game mode even if players say they want a new mode.

Queue both Stronghold and Conquest. During play times get a regular pop on both.

I always leave both queues checked, and I only ever get into Conquest matches. Nobody is out there playing SH right now, it’s just not happening.

Having two queues is part of the problem, because most of the PvP community is unchecking the Stronghold box so they can stick with the same super enjoyable Stand-Inside-A-Circle action they’ve enjoyed since launch.

Stronghold actually attracted quite a bit of PvE & WvW players initially. I know because the guilds I used to be in at the time, one was a large WvW guild that didn’t PvP at all but they played Stronghold when it first came out and enjoyed it.

But Stronghold was ruined early in the seasons when we had invincible eles & scrappers that were able to keep npc’s healed. Pre-mades & pro players exploited the crap out of it and farmed soloq players for fast rank gains. That was during a time when Anet was still matching soloq players with full pre-made teams. Everybody I knew from the WvW guild stopped playing Stronghold then and never looked back, most stopped playing PvP. Myself I disabled Stronghold from queues and never re-enabled it again, I’ve only played Conquest since then.

So if Anet’s goal with Stronghold was to attract more players to PvP, they succeeded at it initially. Unfortunately one of the biggest issues with Anet is how slow they are at reacting to changes needed relating to balance. When there are things that the general populace find distasteful, and you make people wait 3-4 months for things to get tweaked, that’s just too long for a MMO. You have 1 chance at making a good impression in MMO’s, once people get annoyed and leave, most don’t come back. Same thing happened in WvW when Anet introduced Desert BL’s…it was so bad and broken for such a long time, no matter how much it gets tweaked now, most that left are not coming back to play it.

I’d love for there to be true CTF & Team Deathmatch modes. Spirit Watch isn’t CTF, it’s Anet’s bad attempt at adding capture the flag on a conquest map, played 5v5, that just doesn’t work. You want CTF, look at WoW’s Warsong Gulch, one of the most popular BG’s ever created. I’d kill to have something like that in GW2. And 2v2 & 3v3 TDM arena is just long overdue. Both of these game modes would attract fresh blood into the current stale & stagnant PvP scene. The game can seriously use less fighting over small circles.

With that said I’ve enjoyed Capricorn. It’s been a long while since we had a conquest map that didn’t have annoying PvE elements in it. No siege, no doors, no npc’s/lords, just player vs player combat. But if Anet really wants to reinvigorate PvP, it needs new game modes, and it needs faster balance tweaks.

Courtyard was the only reason i started to pvp.
One day they will put it in ranked and it will be glorious.

They tried it. Courtyard really didn’t work.

They gave us what we wanted, not what we needed.

Courtyard needed to incorporate rounds, a 5m time limit, and a team health measuring tool to determine tie breakers. They do that and GW2 would be better off.
