Hello all!

I just recently purchased Guild Wars and i’m trying to get into it. I come from high rated WoW pvp and i’m trying to find a new pvp scene.

So i’m wondering what class is best/good. I’m thinking of going Thief, Warrior or Ele. I’m more of a melee person I think but i want to play what’s going to be good at high ratings and does a lot of damage. I think i mainly want to roam and 1v1 / 2v1 people.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!!

World vs World or Structured PvP?

1v1/2v1 only flies in World vs World. In structured you’d be worthless regardless of profession with this mindset.

For WvW i would recommend D/D ele or Engineer. They are the current meta in WvW roaming.

You’ll want to play ele then. Thief is the best roamer since it has the highest mobility, but it’s extremely hard and only really possible for people at the top of their class to 1v2 anything as a thief. Ele on the other hand still has great mobility, can 1v1 most classes and can hold a 1v2 long enough for backup to arrive.

I don’t mind taking the time to learn a class and get good at it. The only thing that is holding me back from ele is that it’s a caster and what if d/d gets nerfed? Then what?!

Also, I didn’t get to catch the tournament. What comps were in it and what comp won?

If you want to do a lot of damage then play thief. Warrior and eles fill a more deffensive role nowadays.

Warriors and eles can do quite a lot of damage in the right build, but that’s not what they play in high ratings.

However with the new expansion/gamemode this is subject to change, so play whatever you enjoy the most.

NOTE: Also, don’t be too worried about d/d ele nerfs. As long as the conquest gamemode exists (deffend a circle) melee eles are going to be a strong option.

There are high damage ele builds like fresh air with either scepter/focus(traditional in a way) and dagger/focus(newer, not popular). They both have their pros and cons. There also used to be a staff zerker ele build that could wipe a whole enemy team but it only worked against people who ignored the ele, meaning lower tier play.

The problem is d/d cele and staff cele are better.
Also you can either sustain 1v2 with bunkier builds like cele ele, engi, war or roam and burst hard with dps like thief, mesmer, even ranger. A build that could both burst and survive outnumbered for long would be crazy overpowered.

You really should play the profession whose gameplay you prefer. Due to the nature of GW2 combat system, every profession is viable in pvp. Sure, some professions tend to be favored in the current meta (elementalist, engineer, thief, guardian), while some are considered a bit less effective (ranger), but the meta often shifts: last year, elementalists where considered useless in pvp.

If you like melee and 1v2ing people, you could consider engineer in addition of the professions you named. In WvW, a well played engineer can quite easily win 1v2s or even 1v3s against melee professions. In the three professions you named, I wouldn’t choose elementalist if I were you, because d/d is their only melee option, and you would probably like to try out different weapon sets. Thief and warrior have very good melee sets, and some of their animations are great. I hope this was helpful.

In the Glasscanon build it does tons of damage.

In the currently optimal build tho, it doesn’t

What if the world ends tomorrow? What if it doesnt get nerfed?

Just play a class and worry about things when they actually happen. While youre doing thst take the time to watch some build guides and so forth on youtube.

You joined at a very fortunate time in GW2, if you go to twitch.tv/guilwars2 you’ll find the most recent tournament that was played on 3/7/2015 and you can see each meta class and how it’s played.

Basically you can chose 6/8 classes: Guardian/Warrior/Thief/Engi/Necro/Ele to be a strong player.

Guardian is a boon machine and also a DPS/damage machine. Although very fragile.
Warrior is a tank that relies on weapon swaps for damage and timing a certain skill (pindown) on longbow for damage.
Thief is obviously damage but it’s in a weird state cause it’s either s/d or d/p and both have 100% different play styles, (can be seen in Abjured vs Orange Logo video. Abjured runs s/d, Orange logo runs d/p.)
Engineer is the bursty version of an elementalist. Still tanky but you need to time your CC and your blocks to survive and it has VERY low condi clear so it needs support from a warrior/elementalist to kill condi classes if not careful.
Necromancer is a condition machine, Noscoc was considered to be the #1 necromancer in guild wars and can beat the other genral number one classes in the game (elementalist).
Elementalist is a condi cleansing machine, it’s burst comes from resilience and burn/poison/might stacking and it’s very tanky in the long run.

Overall I enjoy mesmer/thief/guardian myself but i like to do the damage and canceling out metas are fun… well i guess guardian will be meta soon since oRNG won with one.

Hammer meditation guardian is considered meta by metabattle for a few weeks now. In EU, you see a lot of them in the Go4GW2 weekly cup.
