New to sPvP: help rally or kill?
My question is what’s the right thing to do? Is there one?
No, it depends on the situation.
I know, that does not help you, there are too many things you have to consider, and then try to choose the right thing depending on the situation.
How much time will it take to kill AND stomp the opponent?
How long will your friend survive in the down state? Will he get stomped soon?
It all depends on the professions around.
Maybe you will manage to survive yourself, and the better choice is to retreat.
Sometime a combination is the right choice f.e. rezzing your friend a bit, that he survives long enough to kill and stomp your opponents.
Sometimes it is the better choice to but your opponent in the down state after your friend died, that he will not get rallied.

Honestly, it depends on what you are and how you are traited, and also on what the fight surrounding you and your ally looks like. Resurrecting a downed ally is a high risk/high reward option, but it’s difficult to pull off. The way I usually look at it is like this:
If my ally is downed – How many enemies are there? If there is more than one, I don’t even bother. Trying to rez would be a death sentence for both of us.
If there is only one enemy – Are they downed too? If they are downed, rez away. If not, it can be tricky.
If they are not downed also – Do I have enough CC to keep the enemy from stomping? If I do, I will use it to try and keep them off my ally and I try to rez them. If there isn’t enough CC, then you have to hope they don’t have any knockbacks/downs because you’re losing your ally if they do. Pop stability, knock them down; if you can’t do that, then try to kill them faster.
If you really want to be the resurrection master, get Rune of Mercy slotted. That makes rezzing a whole lot easier, though it’s not the best rune to be running around with generally.
It is hard to tell more often if you are not tank and do not have stability is better just to finish other guy to get rally. Depends class spec really hard to tell.
Most of time I will concentrate on finishing target( even thought it is hard you want to help your teamate) but it is better faster to do it this way as ranger. Tank Guardian is other story etc.

Hello forum,
I’m starting to play sPvP for the first time and I’m wondering something.
During combat, if one of my allies got downed, my initial response was to help them up. It seemed to make sense preserving the value of an extra player. However, I noticed I got damaged like crazy trying to rally them and sometimes even dying myself. Even going into stealth before rallying them often got me damaged or cc’d. But then sometimes I try to kill the enemy player instead and the enemy is able to finish them.
My question is what’s the right thing to do? Is there one? Even trying to heal your allies to see if the enemy responds can be risky enough.
I’d like to hear your thoughts, thanks in advance.
Mainly depends on the situation, class, you and enemy’s cd, specs and so on…there’s no easy answer
For example if you’re bunker guard and one mate goes down you always have to go for rez, but if you’re a thief or mesmer you probably want to put stealth on the downed guy (Mass invis, sr) and let someone else rez him while you control ppl trying to stomp if you couldn’t stealth him or he broke stealth (Ripping stability, interrupting and so on) cause you won’t probably be able to tank cleave dmg…ending up on you going down aswell..
Also going for rez can be pretty risky vs a heavy dps setup (Even for a soldier war or bunker guard)…offguards, dps eles and mesmers can easily destroy you if you try to rez leaving them freecasting, any good team in a big tf will almost never let you pull out a res if you don’t plan it well (Thats why banner is so good btw). You always have to chose if you can safely go for res, or if someone else is going for it how you can possibly help (Double/triple rez, interrupting stomps, controlling ppl who are cleaving…) never…never do something before thinking…sometimes you can’t even try to res someone and you just leave him there to die…or you can also leave someone downed (Expec if he’s an ele/mesmer/thief that can delay even safe stomps for a bit and not so easy to res due to being pretty glassy) and go for a safe stomp on a war/guard/ranger/nec/engi that can do nothing to delay it. Downstate is a major thing in pvp, a stomp can totally turn a whole teamfight around so it’s not so easy to explain everything on a forum post.
Basic rule is to think before doing anything…“That guy is down, if i go for res can i try it safely? (You’re pretty tanky with some hp left, stab, invuln off cd and so on..) Can i do something better instead, like stomping someone already downed before they can finish my mate? Do they have something that can make a res really hard to pull off? (Shatter mes, condi nec, power nec on lich, offguard, engi spamming nades…)” and many other things…just try to figure out consequences instead of going straight for something. This is the hardest part of pvp anyway…and it’s all bout experience

Thanks for all your replies guys. I’ll try my best to learn when to do what.
As a rule of thumb I’d say always go for the rez. Knowing when not to res will come with the experience.
