Hey ppl, I play GW2 for over a month now and I’m having a blast in PvP with my P/P Thief. I have reached rank 20 and I’m planning to play some Ranked but I’m not sure my Thief with P/P is good for that. My main for PvE is Warrior and I was wondering if I can play Ranked with him. So I made a build I think is good for my play style but I want to hear your opinion on that. Here is the build CLICK and thanks in advance.

Thief is a +1 class through and through. If you suck at it, you make your team loose because you didnt bring a DH bunker.

But on the other hand if you are good, then go nuts.

They’re both extremely easy to play and learn. Focused on damage and 1vs1.

What you are saying is “If you don’t play the current META don’t play at all!”

If you want to play thief, dagger/pistol is a good option! P/P is too easy to counter with a well-placed reflect.
If you focus on decapping far/recapping close, picking off low targets in teamfights and finish downed enemies, you should be fine. You’ll learn and your team and your enemies will suck just as bad as you do (it’s called mattchmaking).
On the other hand thief isn’t that good for newbies, because you need to predict enemy movement pretty precisely to be efficent. Watch the mini map. Know where your team is, what kind of fights need your help and what kind of fights are fine without you. Try to predict when they will go for close, when they’ll storm mid, when they’ll bunker close.

But no matter what, having a second class option is a must for a thief for as long as class stacking is possible. A team with two thiefs can win (as in, it’s possible), but three or more just won’t work.

p.s. blind and stealth are your best friends.
p.p.s. keep moving

Just play and try to improve (watch one or two videos of thiefs in pvp) – if you suck at it, the game will give you (most of the time) teammates and opponents that suck at it as well

I still need to figure out how sPvP works and I’m not gonna play until then (I’ve played enough PvP in other games to know that) but I need to know what class is best for me in it as a start.

Not that we need more DH, but they are a great beginner class due to their innate durability and dmg output. Necro is also a good class to start learning the ropes with because they can be played several ways without the need to learn a ton of rotations.

Another thing not mentioned yet is: Rotation. Its extremly important as a theif to know where enemy/allies are on the map so you can get glimp on where to +1 a fight. And its also important how many enemies died at what specific time. Because if you win a fight middle, you have a window to decap far but not fully capture it because they are going to respawn, and theives are not a 1v1 class in sPVP. There is a top theif player called Sinderer, who has some videos on his youtube explaining all this.

watch this one.

Practice 1v1 match-up in the unranked lobby. Teamplay is about learning when to rotate and using your uh oh buttons to avoid getting burst down. Defend against an incoming player, push a far point or walk away from an uneven match-up.

You have 6 weeks to get this season pvp rewards so take your time. You need at least 60wins,180 loses (both extremes) but with a 50% win rate around 90 ranked games to complete all of this seasons pvp league tracks. So you can get some of the pvp ascended armor or weapons pieces.

Monday night I played 11 not-ranked games and won 8 of them and got my level at 20 so I can play ranked. Last night I had to play 10 games to get my rating and lost 7 of them! In all games(ALL 10!!!) I had AFK or leaving players, ppl that had no idea what are they suppose to do and where. And as a result I got staring rating of 687 so yea… I can’t see the point of this. I expected that ppl will at least know map objectives in ranked play but in most of the games I was the top player and I’m a noob with 60 games under my belt.
