Please excuse me if this has already been discussed but, the search feature here really sucks!
First some history for anyone reading this. One of the things that initially drew me to this game (during beta) was the fact that ANET was boasting about “jumping into the game and doing whatever it is that you like to do”. So I pre-ordered and took part it beta, starting @ BWE1.
One of the first things I did was “jump head first” into PvP, since of course most other games I played, if you wanted to PvP you needed to grind your * off in PvE first, sometimes for really long times (like, think, YEARS)… So this made me excited, and I “dove in”, “head first”, during BWE1 – into PvP.
Anywho, since I saw they really weren’t lying, you literally could: order a copy of this game/create an account, log in, and go straight into whatever it is you like to do. Whether that be PvE, or PvP, or WvW, or crafting, or whatever…
This was one of the MAIN premise on what I used to lure my friends into playing this game (what PvPer hasn’t been annoyed with HAVING to PvE, sometimes for years, before being able to gain “good access” to a games PvP content)!?
Now to the point of this post/thread: Just now, I went to log one of my alt accounts, and I was going to go do some PvP, but wait, what’s this – “THIS FEATURE WILL UNLOCK AT LEVEL 22”
WTF is this? Are you seriously telling me ANET has now made it so you HAVE to be level 22 (PvE) before you can PvP?
If so, WHY this change???
I must say, between the new “Siege Disablers” (for WvW), and now THIS, I am surely NOT going to recruit or even recommend this game to ANYBODY else (in the entire world)… I will surely NOT be buying ANY more gems either (with cash). At this point I don’t even know if I will keep playing the game. They are making some SERIOUSLY BAD choices…!!!
But please, sorry for the stray myself, lets stay on topic. So, WHY this change for PvP? Can I seriously not tell anyone I know (that doesn’t yet have a copy), that they can happily buy this game and dive head first into PvP? Is it so, that you will now have to endure PvE until level 22, before you can enter PvP?
IMHO this NEEDS to be changed back, there needs to be NO PvE or otherwise any external requirements to being able to enter and enjoy PvP!
Yeah the new player experience is just bad but they had to put it on because they have it on gw2 asia so here it is. Enjoy your ruined lvl up phase and your gated content.
Pretty sure you can use the portal in LA
You can use the portal still, it’s just a pointless change to discourage brand new players from doing something that they wouldn’t have done in the first place.

Was there any info on this on the website/patch notes/forum? I don’t frequent any of the above, well, up until recently with my recently discovered dissatisfaction’s with the game. If not, I would REALLY like to hear ANET’s “take” on this one! (along w/ a few other things)
How recent was this change? I made a ranger yesterday to mess around and I was able to get into PvP after I finished the tutorial.
Anet is always going to cater towards people who haven’t even played the game yet instead of the veteran players. This is just going to make the pvp community smaller gating the access.

Maybe it’s an account based thing then? I’d assume so, because the alt account of mine in question is brand new, so no toons on my account in question have ever made level 22 yet. Even though your freshly created toon wasn’t 22, do you have another toon on the account that is = or > 22? If so that indicates to me that it is an account based thing…
Nonetheless, it’s crap, as per my original post…

The New Player Experience patch was designed to target brand new players not brand new characters
This is why it is set that way on your alt account. Any account with a character that has these features unlocked will have access to those features. The icon may be hidden, but the hotkeys and other methods of access will work as intended.
I also do not like the NPe at all, I think they took a big step backwards in terms of trusting their playerbase to know how to play.
But ya, brand new, fresh, out of the box accounts will need to unlock the features on one character, then it will be available for the rest regardless of level.
The more things Anet adds concerning the new player experience the further away they take me to ever creating a new alt.

Now when I think of making an alt, only the thought of what I would have to go through makes me want to puke.
If I was a new player right now, I would quit the game within a week, that’s how bad the new player experience is atm.
Luckily I have a 2 year old lvl 80 toon, because I sure as hell won’t be making a new one, unless they fix the crap they’ve made new characters go through. Seriously who on earth is coming up with such ideas?!
The new player experience in GW2 atm is one of the worst I have ever witnessed in any MMORPG and it was just fine when the game was released!

During sales, that was so long ago. And again, as already mentioned in this thread, once unlocked it’ll be unlocked. So don’t know what we’re talking about? Go buy another copy of the game right now, then log THAT account, then try to get into PvP through the menu. You WILL NOT be able to. (also as already established in this thread, you would still be able to use the AG in LA though to get there.)

I agree, things were fine during beta and at launch! Believe it or not though I do still have family/friends/associates that I haven’t yet lured into playing this game. Knowing all that I know now though. I’m not going to even mention this games name until they start fixing things, especially the things they broke that didn’t NEED “fixing” in the first place.
- This topic (NEEDS to be resolved). To be more specific I’ll even go as far to say the entire new player experience needs to be reverted to what it was at launch!
- WvW needs lots of fixes too (WvW is almost exclusively what I play), with the BIGGEST one being the complete removal of the recently added “siege disablers”; they also need to make it so that tower siege (if not all siege) cannot be destroyed by anything except other siege. Also need to fix the gates, so that player damage doesn’t “go through” the gate (seeing above though also note that player damage will no longer even damage gate anyway, so this would also give players no reason to even be attacking a gate in the first place!!!)! Also. since WvW is literally the ONLY remaining reason for individual server sanctity they need to completely ELIMINATE server transfers (offer one last transfer then you’re on that server FOR LIFE), that will hopefully be a decent way to get people to stop stacking on T1, and spread out more evenly between all the servers.
I know these are just my opinions, but still, if I was in charge over at anet, these are the things I would definitely have on the top of my priority list!

I wasn’t aware of this change, if so it’s a TERRIBLE decision! The entire basic premise of Guild Wars, ever since 2005, has been “pvp with no grind!” I can’t believe they would break a promise that was so foundational to the franchise and their entire company!
Furthermore, it fails to take into account experienced players who simply create a new character that they only want to pvp with. What if someone needs to play a different profession than their main in pvp, but has no interest in levelling it, or who creates a duplicate of a profession they already have because he wants to conform to a naming or dress theme of his pvp team’s?
And what’s worse is, they do this, yet after 2 years of the entire community begging them to, they still haven’t put a rank requirement in tournaments so complete beginners don’t accidentally join Team Arena without knowing what it is.
Anet’s philosophy:
Let’s make a decent game at launch and then slowly update by update take away it’s features to make it more and more annoying. Especially for new players, we don’t want those noobs in OUR game!
And we also won’t listen to our dedicated fans. kitten them. If they don’t like it they can leave. We don’t care if they would potentially spend more money on our game, we don’t need it.
Coming up next update: creating a new character costs 1g and you don’t get access to WvW or EotM until you hit level 60. It’s too confusing to new players and it might feel overwhelming.
Also in the next content update: your first utility skill can be equiped at level 60, second at level 70 and the third one at level 80, because we really don’t want new players to feel overwhelmed by the choice of 3 utility skills AT THE SAME TIME. We want them to slowly embrace this idea of “UTILITY SKILLS”. Also the game will automatically pick a stun breaker utility skill for you at level 60. You will only be able to exchange that skill for the one of your choice at level 80. We want to give new players some direction… However traits will cost even more and will take even more time to obtain them via world exploration.
