Noob if you do Noob if you don't
Alot of the time if I’m dying at far or mid I will tell whoever is at home if it’s uncontested to move mid so I can respawn and go home. But it’s entirely situational.

Khylo. Run to home and cap enemy runs toward me but decides to go mid. I wait and defend home while staff ele keeps an eye out from watchtower.
NOOB GUARD standing there doing nothing!!!Khylo. Run to home and cap no one comes home and I see mid fight is pretty close. I run mid to help and we win but thief snuck out and capped home
NOOB GUARD left home unattended!!!!
This is an un-changeable part of GW2. The only way around this is to have tabs on all 5 enemy teammates, or at least the ones likely to back-cap you at home.
How do you get the whereabouts of your enemies? From real time ‘number calling’, on a VOIP application.
How do you get the whereabouts of your enemies in soloq or teamqueue minus VOIP?
You have not a hope in hell of finding that out, GLHF. Keep your head on a swivel and make sure you don’t IMMEDIATELY get back-capped and that’s the best that you can do.

Capping and going somewhere else to be useful but not over-rotating is, in general, a slightly less probable way to make your team really mad at you. Like, 60% of the time, it’s better to leave home and swing your weight around winning other fights, or, if you run a really dumb side-point A.I build or something similar, go far if nobody is contesting your home point.
But the other 40% there is somebody consistently and predictably coming to your home-point and trying to either fight you or free cap the point, and you know that you can probably get a fight on that capped point soon, then for god’s sake, stay on that point.
Let me re-iterate one big thing.
If you leave home, make sure you don’t over-rotate somewhere – the exception being if you are extremely fast and bursty.

Fun fact: Everyone on your team is a “noob” when you’re losing.
Likewise, everyone on the winning team is a jerk using overpowered builds like Hambow.
That’s just the rule of the game. It’s like that old saying when driving a car – everyone in front of you is a moron, everyone behind you is a kitten.
Honestly, if people are calling you noob, then that is the excuse to just ignore virtually everything they say. Any half-decent leader knows not to insult their team-mates if they want to get results.
The people who do otherwise 90 percent of the time have no idea what they’re talking about. From what I’ve seen anyway. Probably just teenagers that can’t control their hormones.
yeah 5guage covered a lot of important facets.
I’ll just emphasize/elaborate a little more on things I find particularly important, especially since most of my matches are solo or yolo Q.
Taking into account that you’re running a medi guard for home pt here are some tips, and all advice is, of course, situational and may not always be optimal, but its up to you to make those decisions in-game.
-Before the match starts analyze the enemy comp—do they have anyone who can stealth to sneak decaps?
-Do they have anyone notorious for going for decaps?
-Do they have strong mobility?
Now once you’ve analyzed them keep the stealthed classes in mind. If they have 1 thief it’s very easy to keep tabs on him because the other team—solo Q o rnot—will most likely be relying on him to decap and generally won’t pressure far otherwise, unless they wipe you at mid.
So after you cap home, where is the thief? No one else really matters. Is he at the mid fight? Is he downed? Dead?
-If he’s at the mid fight, great, go pressure mid scoping him out. Medi eats thieves for breakfast and make it your job to shut him down, res allies and cleave as much as possible.
—>In this situation the only realistic person to decap you is far pt. So on your way to hunt the thief try and establish where far pt went. Is he coming mid? Crossing to home? Staying far?
Let’s examine the generic and likely paths.
1) Far pt stays far, gg you win mid, 5v4 and secure 2 points. You will rotate home to see how the enemy rotates and repeat your opening rotation.
2) Far pt goes mid. You have 2 good options. A) Stay mid to help win the 5v5. B ) Get the advantage mid (1 kill or a couple downed bodies) and make sure your team looks stable enough to secure victory from there and procceed to decap far if the thief is dead/down or begin rotating home. As a medi guard I would only recommend going far if you have no one realistically better to decap. This is a point of contention since many would make strong arguments that you shouldn’t pressure far if you have home and won a 5v5 mid. I believe if you time it right it you have a good amount of time to decap, and begin running home. Also, it slows the pace at which you win mid, meaning people will be bleeding out, dying at even further times apart which will create an imbalance in their respawns so they don’t immediately regroup to push as a team.
3) Enemy far pt will run to your home pt. Now you have 3 likely decisions to make:
a) burst with everything in 5-10seconds mid, then run to decap far.
b) run back home to 1v1 him
c) stay mid if your team is just STRUGGLING to survive the 5v4 because if you leave and your team loses the 5-1v4 then you’re in a horrible position. It’s better (in my opinion) to win the 5v4 and lose home/far and then have the option to rotate 3-4 people home fast to win it back.
I put abc in this last scenario in the generic, likely response that I would want my home pt to react.
Now for some elaboration on general tactics. After you cap home, regardless of where you go, see how aggressive the other team is. Your primary focus in the game is to be USEFUL, and not necessarily using home to limit yourself. If you trade home for far and from there can be useful, more power to you.
Some teams won’t even bother checking your home because they’ll assume someone’s watching it like a hawk. I think it’s fairly rare that you’ll find an ultra agressive decapper that can successfully sneak away many times. However, if you do encounter this, and it’s so bad that it’s hurting your team, there are very very rare situations where you have home pt defender pretty much “puppy-dog” camp home and you make that decision at your discretion and ignore whatever anyone else says to you.
However, you must realize, as long as deaths are not an issue, every second you are alone at home pt, your team is theoretically outnumbered somewhere else. Don’t be the reason your team loses an outnumbered fight. It doesn’t mean that you should be in THAT fight, but understand that the trade-off should outweigh the cost of you not being there.

Have a little confidence that you can make the right call. There is no sense getting caught up on whether or not you do the right thing to the point where you’re freezing up. Take risks or play it safe, realize that as long as you remain human you’ll make some mistakes. As long as you can learn from them, there is nothing to fear. We can all talk theory for years but the best way to learn is by doing and not take what other say personally. If they have advice that makes sense book it, if not ignore them.

Pure truth.
Turn off chat. There are times when having chat is actually useful…but if you are soloQ, just turn it off and save yourself the headache.
You can still call things like 4 home, etc. even being unable to see it. Just do the best you can do, and don’t let others bring you down.

So if everyone takes your advice, no-one is listening to anyone. You expect people to reinforce/avoid home in response to your calls, but you’re not even giving them the benefit of the doubt by listening to theirs?
How about you just do your best impersonation of an adult, discover some intestinal fortitude, and not care so much about what random strangers on the internet say about you. If someone is being particularly nasty and you’re all out of tissues, you can always block them, but if you’re turning off chat to spare yourself hurt feelings because you keep getting called a noob… you’re probably a noob.
If you don’t want to work together as a team to win tourneys, go back to hotjoin and stop wasting people’s time.

Everything that can be done, you can do yourself in SoloQ, by looking at the minimap every so often. It has nothing to do with hurt feelings, I could care less. But seeing people complain at each other all the time in chat is simply a distraction.

Some players, especially bad ones, will find a way to blame the team’s failures on others while avoiding responsibility for themselves. It’s like a bully, they take it out on others.
The other day I was called a noob along with another teammate for retaking our home point by a guy who was getting farmed off point. I’ve had a guy call the whole team noobs while he claimed to be fighting 3 people on skyhammer alone, when there were at least 3 enemies on the rest of the map holding their points. I’ve had a player I really respected throw a hissy because his teammates died – he wasn’t sure why, but somehow missed the warrior who came up from the other side of the point that swung the team fight.
It happens, and it is really difficult to avoid. I’m no elite player but if be willing to talk in game if you want to add me.

No wonder Solo Q sucks…
When I shout 2~3 at home or 5 at middle, home needs help, mid need help, foe’s far empty, foes charging lord, or bottom (temple) is covered… you CAN’T even here me…
Minimap is not reliable….
Also when the team is asking about build and the role who’s taking, you can’t see it either, and you’ll assume other people will do according to your plan…
I finally understand why most yolo q people play like headless chickens because they don’t even bother to help the team.

I agree with what lux said.
Specific tip for battle of khylo: while you are capping home you will see enemy necromancers/elementalists/aoeclasses positioning themselves on clocktower, this is the best time to call target on them as you have the best view of all your teammates.
Another tip for those situations where you can see the enemies as they approach you 2v1: don’t disengage immediatly , consider the situation before you take action.
Classic example: you get invaded by thief + someone else, if you run away immediatly chances are you won’t make it to the teamfight because the thief will intercept you on the way while the other guy will cap.
If no backup is on the way and you realize you won’t be able to escape it’s best to just buy time and die on point, your teammates should rotate far in the meantime and when you respawn check if the other guy is still on close, if he is move mid, if he isn’t get close back.
You can still call things like 4 home, etc. even being unable to see it.

Yes, I’m the type of person who makes you turn chat off. I’m the type of person who expects some minimal level of effort and consideration from my team.

Depends on the person, yes it could be a distraction, or not. To me it is a distraction.
And no, it is not a contradiction, I said “you can” meaning, anyone capable of doing so can, if they want to.
I am perfectly fine with not reading chat, others may want to read chat….this must be an incredibly hard concept for you to grasp. Unless you feel this is some magical requirement for “minimal effort”
Play, try, stop complaining.

Hey, you don’t need chat to zerg around getting carried. I can see how getting raged at by people who are sick of your attitude would be ‘a distraction’.
You actually think you can read everything you need to know about a game from the minimap. Says it all, really.

I don’t see why EVERYONE would take that advice, it is aimed at the people who are getting flamed at in chat (see OP…hopefully you actually read it)
It is hard to find a difference between SoloQ and Hotjoin as is, aside from not having team swapping and actually finishing an entire match duration.
Do people really not understand that every match doesn’t fall under the same circumstances every time?
And Entropy, you are bordering personal attack, if you have a problem, block me, leave it out of here though, you seem like someone who cannot discern the difference between fact and opinion.

nah shutting down the chat takes away all the fun, go invisibile to block off whispers and then join the party and go crazy on map chat.
You may also consider filling up your in-game mail for those prolonged yolo queue sessions where people start sending you mails instead of whispers.
My advice to the OP is not to listen so much to other people.
They’re usually:
-Clueless
-Giving advice 10-20 seconds behind the constantly evolving situation that is PVP which is useless advice.
-Not taking into consideration the type of build, mobility, decap, support, burst etc that you are and giving you “advice” (petulant whiny criticism) for their build.
Have map awareness, see what your enemies are doing. If they’re constantly probing/flipping home and you’re a slow bunker, stay home.
If they’re crushing your team 3v3 at mid or higher, rotate harder as their comp is just better than yours and you’ll have to outrun them on caps and point opportunities.
Pay attention to feed scenarios. Don’t feed the enemies, and capitalize on your own if you can.
Pay attention to one time only point games such as NPC kills Tranq etc but not to the point where you’re behind on caps and spending a quarter of the match on a contested one.
Press the advantage when you’re ahead on caps, break the fortress door, assault the lord a little. If you’re behind even just faking it as a distraction for a bit (shoot the base, shoot the lord and leave) it can sway a game if too many noob defenders rush to stop you. (Provided your team is not stupid and caps instead of rushing to help.)
My personal pet peeve as a glassish roamer is bunkers that immediately leave a point after I just helped them cap vs. enemy situation where mid or home is constantly assaulted. I end up bunkering that point way more than I should as a roamer because no one proper is doing the job and I know an enemy is going to be right back in respawn + travel time seconds.
That comes from a cowardly mentality that even though they are in a bunker build or at least a heavy assault they want to cling to at least a 2v1 instead of doing their real job and preventing walk some on caps till the team can get back. Even I can do this on power ranger quite often, and even 2v1.
(edited by Otaking.4675)
If I play support bunker guard yeah I am gonna go wherever the biggest fight is. But as a bunkerish MED guard or any other kind of dps role..
I feel like I am a noob if I do or a noob if I don’t
Right here is a little of what I was talking about in my last statements. Yes it’s great to have a boon spam at mid but it is greater to keep home ticking points during that whole fight so if no one is defending home you may need to change your tactic. Your boons will help at home at the same scale they do at mid. 1v1 you’re booned 1v2 it scales up equally when people start showing up. Don’t put the scaling over the current tactical need of the match.
Personally I make sure to /block people being rude, on my team or not. Play as you want, the build that you’re comfortable with, do your best, have fun and that’s it. Your teamates will have to deal with it, and politely. This is a game.
Impressive that you come to the forums not to complain and whine, but actually with an open mind to ask about these things…
There’s a lot of extra information you can get from minimap and chat; if your teammates don’t utilise them for communication in solo Q/yolo Q, fine, they are missing out – but that doesn’t mean you should follow their practice. You can do better than they do, if not mechanically, then positionally. It is a game, sure, but it is also a competitive one (although not #esports) where winning matters, especially in Player vs Player format.
Don’t get offended by insulting chat. If you take all the shiet seriously, I would start to worry about your ego, because there’s only so much one can take. Blocking people or turning off chat though, is running away from the problem. Face it. Get shiet on, shrug, and say nothing. If it’s not useful or helpful to you, have the mental fortitude to get it out of your head. Focus on getting better.
If you are not in an organised team where everyone calls out important information, you need to compensate with other forms of communication, or informed rotation by looking at teammate health, position, and node possession.
Using chat you can relay things like:
Initial opening (skip boss/temple cross far/forest crossing/steals)
Enemy thief respawn timer
Enemy numbers on node (so roamers can decide if they need to burn skills/break off to arrive faster if say, 3 mid vs you)
Enemy strategy changes from mid vantage point (esp. Guardians)
Helpful reminders for the absent minded (830)
And target-calling on trainable targets, along with map pinging are very helpful.
As a Bunker Guardian you want to be in teamfights to support and hold the point with your heals, condi clear and might stack to help them win. However there are situations taking into account your mobility, the state of the distant teamfight (whether your arrival will help them win), and enemy decappers. Think about what the enemy would do.
The absolute worst is just deciding to leave your home without checking thief position (e.g. thief just on Kyhlo window plinging away and watching your movements) and you get stuck inter-node travelling while thief gets free decap at no cost. (Your thief/roamer should be keeping an eye on it though.)
We’ve all been newbs before (now I’m a noob). It’s not the best idea to stick to one strategy because players think and adapt on the fly.

I’d like to thank all the people who came on here with advice for me. I already feel like I am being more effective and importantly I feel much more relaxed. I don’t have the same frustration and anxiety of “Am I doing the right thing”. I am having fun again. I even take the lead a lot more now in groups that have no one talking. I figure even a noob leader calling out targets and spawn times is better than haphazard zerglings running all over. Got another question for you guys but I am going to put it in a new topic called “Is Support Guard Gimping”
Erik
Support Guard
Here Comes The Boon
formerly Mini Bunker
I think new players almost always think that: “I need to kill enemies wherever I can”.
Fact is, there is no “permanent killing” in this game. There is only being sent back to base for about 10 seconds.
So if you “kill” them and they get a 3 sec respawn, and their home point is being fought over…you have actually teleported them to that fight!
If you can keep two enemies busy trying in vain to kill you for a minute or two as a bunker, then you have made it an easier fight for your team somewhere else…maybe in a critical fight over a point that your team cannot afford to lose!

LOL, you just can’t help yourself, can you, hypocrite. Even as you berate me for launching what you meekly characterise as a ‘personal attack’, you can’t resist injecting your own limp little personal snark.
This lack of self-awareness probably explains your unintentional contradictions, and your subsequent defensiveness when trying to cover up your embarrassing blunders.
If you have a problem, block me. See how that works? Just like if you have a problem with abusive players, you block them rather than isolate yourself from all team communications like some kind of emotionally fragile, home-schooled religious nut.
If that doesn’t help because everyone is calling you a noob… then you’re probably a noob. Consider reasonable criticism and try to improve.
