Noobs ruined Hot-join Game-play Experience
Level 54 Bear Rank
The issue is, rank really doesn’t matter. I met rank 50-60 players and they were really bad.
Not quite sure how to fix that tbh outside of remaking HJ completely. In legaue you could queue for unranked matches and it would consider your hidden MMR and even though it is not ranked match you usually would fight players similar to your skill lv.

I think a “place me” option for hotjoin would be nice. It would stick you into a match based upon some hotjoin mmr.
You could still ignore the option and manually join though.
Rank does not = skill.
I think if you use the random game thing for Hotjoin, then it should be intelligent enough to place you in a game where there are players of similar rank, but if you manually select, you should be able to play what you want.
It’s hot-join, no one cares. It’s for lulz and people go there to kill, not play objectives. Think of it like random arenas of GW2.
I thought that’s what the button says when you click it? that it will put you into a game appropriate to your rank… I guess this isn’t working as intended..
.
You know you are on a losing team when when you see players do any the following:
- ignoring the orb in Spirit Watch, running past it or not bothering to stop players taking it to a base
- ignoring the powerups (even the one which grants you ALL bases when capturing it) in Temple of the Silent Storm
- ignoring svanir and chieftan mobs (+25 pts each) in Forest of Niflhel
I just swap teams or start a new game when I see this happening, they clearly don’t have any idea what’s going on, so what’s the point in playing with them.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Structured_PvP —> click and learn, it’s not rocket science.
Honestly, I support the idea, at least about separate Q for 1-15 ranks.

Yes rank doesn’t necessarily mean skill but come on, we all know that it generally means that a rank 40 player is more likely to be better than a rank 10 or 20. That’s just experience and that’s just how it is.
The problem with hotjoin right now is that you’re allowed to pick which side to join. The common tactic is to check the ranks on each side before joining. So usually it’s the high ranks that join in the same team while the new players who don’t know about checking ranks are on the other side to get slaughtered by the more experienced team.
Take out the choice to pick a side and have the game put you in a team randomly when both sides are even in numbers. But then there’s the problem of people just quitting if they don’t end up on the side they want and then joining again to try to get on the team they want.
So basically, there’s no real solution. It’s hotjoin and it’s probably always going to be a hot mess. If PVP is separated by ranks I think it will dilute the PVP player base. The playerbase already seems too small as it is. I keep seeing the same people. If I could only join matches with players near my rank it will further narrow the pool of players that I can match up against.

also add:
fighting zerg vs zerg on ONE BASE while the other (unguarded bases) are not being captured.
common sense clearly lacking in some people.
Rank does not = skill.
No, but when I fight people with less than rank 10 I notice it.
because he doesn’t know it himself
Hot Join is the only fun arena left.
Everything else is just bunkers camping capture points and other bunkers trying to knock the camping bunkers off said points.
I’ve met a rank 80 ele with tier 4 cultural armor and all he ever did was die to warriors/thieves/rangers/guardians/necro/engy NO SKILL ele please remove this class from the game please.
previously rank 2 on old leaderboards

Ideas:
1) Arena should segregate hot-join players in term of their range of levels.
Example, 0-15. 16-29,30-40,40-80
No fun for noobs either if all they get is being slaughtered by higher rank players in hot-join. Arena, you don’t put a cat with a bunch of huge raging fighting lions in the same cage don’t you?2)Noobs can enter higher rank game as a viewer instead. To learn, if they wish to.
At the moment, yeah, noobs ruined hot-join pvp game play experience, either for themself, or for veteran players.
I agree with you that new players are a concern and I like your idea above. Especially when everyone is level 30-50 and each side has a low level 20 or even10. However Last night I was in several matches with low level players and in some cases the low level players where out playing the higher level players. That being said I think the two issues ruining any Pvp mode, is the lack or refreshing new ideas and balance. Nothing is worse then teams of HamBow Warriors and that Engi that just knocks you back over and over again. Sure there are 100 other things wrong Im sure but these are the two things IMO that are impacting not only the quality of matches in tournaments and Hot-Join but many players have grown tired and board moving on to other things or even back to other games buying time. I know a group of guys that played pvp everyday last year and have gone back to games far worse then GW2. GW2 is a good game to make it great we need some new ideas! Sometimes that may mean a change in employees or a shuffle of employees. Seems to have been a lack of comments from Dev’s in the pvp section of the forums but I can’t blame that at the same time. I don’t like to converse with people that are angry and mad. I pray everyday that new PvP content is just around the corner. Ill keep playing and praying!

Maybe he was testing out a new ele build that simply sucked? It doesn’t necessarily means he as no skill unless you’ve seen him suck at every profession.
I love this idea. This way when I start a new alt that I am entirely unfamiliar with, I will automatically get paired with players who are ranked on average to my main professions rank and I can be an entirely easy stomp for everyone while I figure out how/what/where/when and why of a new professions core mechanics. Genius. Keep the good idea’s coming.
i’ve got to rank 40 from pretty much hotjoin alone, i’ve probably been in maybe 5 tournament matches,
i am a very casual player, i log on once every few days and spend a couple of hours in hotjoin with my none meta builds (axe/axe war, P/P thief), DO NOT chuck me in with the meta-morons!
i wouldn’t log on if all i could do is get facerolled by hambows and condi engis/necros…
Rank does not = skill.
No, but when I fight people with less than rank 10 I notice it.
doesn’t apply to all
i have a guildmate, he is like rank 20? but he is around rank 150 or so on leaderboards…why? he did a lot of time in wvw and actually know how to fight

Oh arena, so much fun for the newbies? Is that how you attract new players into PVP content?

Yea, i don’t know what killed them when they get near me either.
The only exclusive skyhammer stream
Another idea:
Try not calling people noobs and give them some directions.. maybe they won’t think by themself, wow that player is a jerk so i am now gonna troll the living daylights out of him. or end up in lengthy discussions about how bad someone is ..
The words “hey , i know you are new, please come and stand on this point for the rest of the match and call if it gets decapped”.. usually works.

Grabbing candies from a baby is fun for you?
Losing is part of the fun for you?
My point is, a Good Game/Fun Game should be consisted of 2 teams of players at the same par of playing level/experience. We feel accomplished and that’s part of the fun! Not thrashing newbies. If this persist to continue for a long term without any remedies from arena, PvP would ultimately meet its impending doom i dare to say.
Well i care =), for the newbies as well.
Meanwhile entertain yourself with another screenshot. I’m pretty sure that rank 42 wasn’t having any fun at all in his losing team.

This has GOT to be a joke right? Is the OP mocking all the “matchmaking fail!” threads started by people complaining about rank 1s in their top-500 tournament games or something?

Which part of “Noobs ruined Hot-join Game-play Experience” have failed to make you understand the discussion was about Hotjoin and not about tournament?
Level 54 Bear Rank
I find most lower ranked players are serious about winning in hotjoin and higher ranked players are just there for fun, waiting for a queue to pop, or testing different builds a lot of the time.

^ This. I’m with you OP, but there needs to be a better implementation so high rank players rolling new alts won’t get kitten d.
And yes, rank does matter. GW2 pvp is all about experience and knowing how to fight with/against all classes. Rank is a reflection of that amount of experience.

Lol yeah tell it how it is, with my treb, cannon and hammer of the sky glory build I am like a glory god.
Sorry bro rank is just a reflection of time wasted.

You could try to be more constructive, stop WASTING people’s TIME reading on useless comment such as this from your good-self.
You mentioned about glory farming issue which is obviously not in any way related to the discussion here.

@OP
It’s hotjoin
Solo Arena is what you’re looking for. They sort by an MMR rating in tPvP.
Also PvP rank doesn’t matter, it’s the MMR rating that is a more accurate representation of player skill.
Norn Guardian – Aurora Lustyr (Lv 80)
Mia A Shadows Glow – Human Thief (Lv 80)
It baffles me what people can expect from unranked hotjoin. Sure solo queue isn’t perfect, but it is the entry point to ranked pvp, as others have said, hotjoin is for learning the basics of your builds and farming glory, nothing else.
Lol maybe I did seem to go off topic but then again how often in a game of randoms does only 1 player go off to deal with a threat?
Your right I should stay on topic about the lower ranked players being unskilled getting beat up upon by higher ranked “skilled” players, all the while posting pictures of me on the higher ranked side with the other team being full of lower ranks. I’m sorry that we aren’t given the CHOICE on what side we want to be on before the game begins not give the option to SWITCH SIDES during the match, truly is unfair at the max.
anyone remember when all the cool kids traded matches back and forth and basically went afk for ranks? just another reason why rank does not = skill.
regardless the current format is broken. it’s also getting extremely boring doing the same ole crap. i hope they look at the recent tournies and make some new non-trollhammer match types and what not.

Wouldn’t it be a random experience like soloQ then? How would you put people in brackets without ruining teamplay and taking away variety from hotjoin?
Pretty sure that a bunch of people would complain if they lost the option to pick a server, play with friends despite rank difference, being able to pick a specific map etc. Remember that hotjoin likely is the best place to learn playing professions, testing new builds, attack strategies and so on.
Just ask Anet to make 10% of the public servers “Rank 1-10” and another 10% “Rank 11-20” with rank restrictions to secure new players from being violated.

Yeah that’s why I thought you MUST be joking: IT’S HOTJOIN!

Obviously good idea in theory but we can’t split the player base any further at the moment.

o yay my 50 war got into a pic =)
Rank does not = skill.
It’s experience.
Every other MMO I’ve played does matchmaking based on experience.
It works.
GW2 has a hefty fancy MMR system that took them months to get running this well… and its about up to par with other games’ slap-together matchmaking.

for tournaments
Yeah, but the point is whether or not matchmaking needs to take into account skill, not just rank.
And so I said it works just fine based on rank alone, if you want anything more complicated (ike an ELO style system) it will take months to enact and probly won’t end up working as well as a simple one based on straight up ranks.

It’s repeated team stacking that ruins hotjoin experience.
disabling the option of joining Red/Blue team might solve the problem. Hardly anyone clicks on “join random team” because with team stacking happening everywhere doing that would just throw yourself into the weaker team
