Fear The Crazy [Huns]
Q:
I’ve been waiting for observer mode since tournaments are in. In Gw1 I liked to observer the best matches, you can learn many things from there, and to get into the observer and others can spectate your team is something worth fighting for
I’m glad it’s finally in, but as far as I know we will only be able to observer hotjoin/custom arena matches, like in an FPS game.
Or could we observe the top rated tournaments after they’ve finished the match?
I’m not sure I want to watch r5 vs r10 PvE guys fighting off points and zerging all over the map.
Exactly, after the patch you can observe Custom-Arena-Matches but no Tournaments. The reason behind this is the possible abuse of gaining an advantage through a third party member. So you could see where the teams are and what they are doing, and in the meantime telling it to participats of the match.
For sure A-Net has to implement a delayed observe-mode for Toprated-Tournaments. After the match is finished you can find it in a ingame-list. I think this will coming in the future.
I know that live-match observing is cheating, but they should add the match to a menu after they’ve finished. What’s the point in not observing top tournament matches but PvE guys? You can’t learn anything from hotjoin. I had an arguement with a guy (r30 guy!) in hotjoin who kept reasoning about that zerging is ways better than point capturing and holding and you shouldn’t pay attention for those things..
I srsly start to think that they don’t know for what purpose ppl want a feature.

Tbh, observing custom arenas will likely prove much better. Tournaments are random at best where as CAs will probably have community run tournaments that will be advertised and possibly shout casted
Back in GW1 they had Observer mode where you could view rated GvG matches, battles in HoH and such with a delay, no reason not to have them in GW2 too, it’ll just take time I assume.
From a programming standpoint spectating with a delay may be related to replays, so we may get these two features together.
Observing tournaments needs to happen at some point, and will have to have a 10min~ delay. For now though, as others have mentioned… the best/most entertaining matches may well be custom tournaments where teams sign up. Will seem a little odd though in comparison to GW1 where you could view the top 100 guild matches, so you’d know what you were about to watch was a high quality matchup. That said, since the “top ranks” are player based, rather than team based, there’s no guarantee that a tpvp match will be any good.
I’d like to see rankings return based on guilds, so we have a ladder of “pre-mades” – I’d also love to have proper HA style tournaments back too, the gold lined capes for the top guilds, and the excitement that came from winning in HoH and holding it for a few rounds!

1. unless they implement GW1 style Observer Mode (you could watch the replay of the match after it’s finished), it would be too easy to abuse the current live observe system.
2. “zerging” as you call it, can actually be quite effective if it’s done with an organized team and build. You just have to think outside of the box

We all know what’s a hotjoin zerg.
