Q:
I just tried sPvP for the first time last night – lemme tell ya, it’s awesome!
So I woke-up, did my business, and got super excited for round two. I was feeling pretty great because I usually placed top of my team and I’m new-ish (I dabbled in WvW for the last week).
So I said “pffft… servers are for chumps, let’s do tournaments!!!!!!”
first match… 500 – 100-ish… we lost… I had almost all the points for our side
second match… 500 – 125-ish… we lost… I had almost all the points for our side
third match… 500 – 157… closest I’ve come to winning… I was second most points on our side
then… fourth match… 500 – 35, I had the most points (195), and we finally won one!

in fact, all the matches I played today were super-extra-positively landslides
now… this is day one of PvP ranked arena for me, but what in the sam kitten is up with this matchmaking!?!?!?
last night when I played for the first time in server browser, it was beyond fun and many of the matches were very close. The PvP ranked arena matchmaking has all the intelligence of a boy with a very large forehead who rides a very short bus

LOL.
First, Great Name followed with great low brow humor. You will go far.
2) Welcome to tourney play.
The matchmaking for Solo que is very flawed, particularly at low MMR (matchmaking ratings) and when you just start to play. You will encounter a ton of blow outs in the early go because your sample size is small and your rating will fluctuate wildly. A-net is aware of the issues with their matchmaking algorithm, and while I am sure it will take longer than we’d like, they will improve upon it at some point.
If you really want good matches on a more consistent basis, then collect some friends in your solo que travels and get into team que using VOIP and really trying to maximize your effectiveness. Sadly there are very few teams playing on a regular basis anymore, but if you seek competition, then forming a team and improving your play in team que is the best way to get consistently decent matches. You will get rolled a lot in the beginning, but be sure to communicate with your team before and after the match on what is working and what isn’t and you can get to be pretty decent pretty quick.
First off, that’s awesome that you’re getting into spvp, glad you had some fun.
To your question though, a couple things:
-Yes, matchmaking isn’t the best. The algo seems to have some funny quirks, and it can really throw it off if there’s not a lot of people playing. There’s also a big problem of people not joining matches, and getting 4v5s.
- Keep in mind if it’s your first time into pvp, it will take the game awhile to figure out how good you are, and place you with people of similar skill. The matchmaking should get better the more you play.
- Personal score isn’t everything. It favors getting kills and captures, and undervalues holding points. Your primary mindset should be helping your team win, not getting points. Getting the win is the best way to boost your rank.

Personal scores mean nothing, a good bunker guardian can keep a point for the whole match ending up with less that 50 pnts cause he won’t kill and he still did his job fine…instead of going in soloq i suggest you to find 4 friends (Or join a pvp guild) and try out tpvp first…at least you can play on ts with ppl you know…if you find someone with some experience in tpvp is even better, you can try soloq later when you already have some exp on what to do and you can eventually try to carry teamates (Well if you get leavers, afkers and really bad ones it’s almost impossible but at least you can try)
If you have questions just ask…spvp forum is here for this too
The matchmaking sucks. You average game win or loss will be ridiculous landslides a lot of the time. In solo q a fairly competitve game is 500-300 which is really not competiteve at all.
The matchmaking system is actually pretty good. It does have a couple flaws but I don’t think you’re experiencing anything like that. There’s a couple of things going on:
1. Matchmaking is determined by a leaderboard rating, not your PvP level. Since those were your first few matches, you didn’t have a rating yet.
2. You were playing in the middle of the morning. There aren’t many other people playing at that time, so the game has fewer people close to your rating to work with.
I usually play a couple rounds each evening, and I can honestly say that almost all of them are closer than 500-350. There are a few exceptions, but not many. Maybe I’m just lucky, since it appears other people have more issues than I do.
Hope that helps. Good luck!
