So there is a poll going on right now on whether to lock profession once the game started in order to allow arenanet to provide better matchmaking. My question is, how is this not going through? How can anyone think this isn’t a good idea?

Team composition plays such a huge roll in how the game plays out and currently there is no system in place to ensure balanced matches. Matchmaking, as it is, comes down to your tank. 3 thiefs vs 3 dragonhunters? Why not? You’ll have so much fun being paired on the wrong side of that…

No one really switches anyway so I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would vote against this, plus it’d make the 60s countdown much lower in turn. Do people not look at the teams before a match to determine their chance of success? I do, and I’m positive 80% of the time I’ve said “this isn’t in our favor” we’ve lost, the other 20% you can attribute to individual skill.

In any case, if this doesn’t go through I hope arenanet still makes the effort to balance who gets assigned to what team. I swear I’ve been in matches that could have been perfectly symmetrical but classes were stacked instead; something like two warriors, two necros and an ele vs and ele, two mesmers and two guards.

It may seem silly considering we can switch but I’d be beyond amazed if the actual % switch pregame is higher than 5%. Knowing that, why are people voting no? I don’t get it…

The fact that composition plays such a huge part is why people don’t want it. Players want agency in their comp because nobody wants to get comp screwed. Players are always kittened when you take away agency.

The fact of the matter is that “Yes” is not going to magically result in balanced comps. In order for the MM to actually create balanced comps you’d need a matchmaker capable of dynamically determining the purpose of build and it’s potential synergy with other builds. That would require delving into machine-learning which is well beyond what a game studio can realistically achieve.

Sanity is for the weak minded.

On a side note… and I mentioned this in the actual thread about Class locking. Most people that argued that they needed to switch once they got into a match due to finding out they needed other builds ,

Didn’t read that no matter what, you will not be switching after the warm up timer ends no matter what you vote. In fact I can already see all the 4v5 matches where people can’t get back in because they left to late to switch classes and the warm-up timer goes off.

They will be locked out of the game, this is why it would of just been better to lock it upon Queue up and let Arena Net figure out how to better balance classes. As in, while they couldnt have the system doing team synergies and such, they could of had a hard rule in place that never allowed more then 2 of the same class per team.

Or they could of made people pick characters they want to play based on what others havent picked (though this decidedly comes with to much work so the above solution is better.)

Oh well! No class specific leaderboards for us!

look its a lose, lose situation. either way you’re stuck with anet’s pants matchmaker, just one option allows people to rebel against the matchmakers insane choices, & the other gives a dying game a new leaderboard for the community to try & manipulate.

y’all gotta rock rose tinted glasses with maximum tint, near opaque, to think voting yes will result in better matchmaking. man, wonder how any of y’all see at all.

I actually wanted people to vote yes so we could have profession leaderboards and other things of that nature. I also don’t want to deal with all the people that will try to switch classes at the last minute and dont get back in before the warm-up match ends.

from my perspective voting ‘yes’ is just a big gamble.
most of the time if i end up in a terrible team comp one or more people swap classes. not all the time, but a lot of the time. without swaps we would have lost a lot of games that we ended up winning, because our second thief wouldn’t have been able to swap to druid.
so if people can’t swap im just going to lose more games due to matchmaking.

anet has made no promises about class stacking. they have said they might have a look a soft class limit, but nothing concrete at all. i have no faith that profession mmr will result in better games, i mean matchmaking is poor right now & has been for years, so why would this suddenly fix it? different mmrs for classes isn’t helpful if the matching system doesn’t work.
so, if you take off the rose tinted glasses the reason to vote ‘yes’ is so you can have profession leader boards.

personally, id rather lose less stacked games than have a meaningless leaderboard.
