Can we get this into the game? Be able to accept / decline duels when ever where ever? Fractals / raids / Home instances / Open world PvE? Party members can accept and decline too? up to 50 man open world fights? Has someone suggested this before and it was declined ? And why ? I think this will bring more immersion to Guild wars 2 gameplay. I understand Gw2 or Guild wars in general has tried to stray away from the traditional MMORPG concept ( I.E team work mobs no kill stealing and loot for everyone) , but with the way things are going now; with the implementation of mounts in the next expansion we can see now that it is slowly turning into a traditional MMORPG. Which I absolutely have no problem with because it brings immersion to the game.
Immersion for whom? Considering all PC are under the same banner. That would break immersion.
What you have suggested is WvW, in a PvE setting. Anet should just have WvW maps as skirmishes.
Also considering we have PvP. There is no need
Can we get this into the game?
Please don’t.
Ehh, I don’t see how open world pvp brings any further “immersion” to the game.
Nonono, Nick. I too want to troll and annoy level 5 characters with 500 duel requests and send them derogatory messages when they decline!!
Anet are keen to keep game modes separate and it’s not a widely popular suggestion amongst the community. WvW largely deals with map wide pvp and encroaching it into the space of pvers would likely prove incredibly unpopular (as it it has everytime this is suggested)
I have no issue with duels or pvp, but they need to be kept to their assigned game mode where they belong.
not sure how open world pvp in a game all about co-operation between players brings immersion.

Lol “ehiehi wanna fight? I use only 1 and 7. Come on chicken. Okok i’ll use only 7. Come on. Nonono don’t run inside the city. … he left… i’ll whisper to that chicken >:D” can already see it lol
No.
It’s not “immersion,” it’s e-willy comparison.
Take it to the Mists where it belongs.
Don’t know Nick Lentz, I played such a system in another MMO and it worked quite well. Even if we are all on the same side in general, conflicts between people still arise, and in a world full of violence, duelling would not be a weird choice to resolve them.
I don’t really have massive group-PvP in mind (go to WvW for that), but rather one on ones, or with few people involved.
You would choose when you are willing to PvP on the fly. Those who don’t care would not be affected at all, and those who wanna try PvP can choose to do so without leaving their environment.
In the current system, PvP is basically another world than PvE. I didn’t bother with PvP in this game yet, although I loved it in other games. I just don’t like doing PvP in arenas.
This idea would only work well if its implementation goes hand in hand with an easier way to switch builds. You need to set up your character differently, depending on the way you play, PvP or PvE. If you start PvP with your PvE build, you are in for a bad time. I really don’t get why there is no way to set up traits and save them under a number/name in the Heroe Panel. Then, when you fight a specific boss, you just click the number/name of the setup you chose for boss fights. I’m pretty sure the majority of players does not experience the diversity different builds provide, because they never change their character’s traits. They set it up once and live with it. The only people who change them regularly are those who play content where you really notice the difference, like high level fractals or raids.
Did you seriously just suggest allowing people to duel in raids?

Those same people are already nuisances, and there is a way to deal with them: set to ignore, problem solved.
I think he did ^^

As far as I’m concerned this is the only reason anyone would want an open world PvP system.

What you describe is already happening in WvW. You might not know this but players have been dueling in the past, still duels and will still do it evenif it is not a supported game mode. And what happens if people that decide to duel in open world takes up place, scale up events and associated world boss to th point which other people who want to join a map are denied the access ?
Do other MMOs have event scaling? I haven’t played any others to know. If not, I’d think that would be one consideration, having things like that, all the co-op stuff for the open world (shared boons, heals, etc) that would somehow have to be kept secret. Otherwise, non-duelers could “grief” duelers by spamming boons on them.
There’s already PvP, WvW, and guild arenas. Use them.

Or they would just grief players. I played LOTRO for a long time. Their dueling was certain areas only. Which would be an idea…..if we didn’t already have a designated PvP area
And what happens if people that decide to duel in open world takes up place, scale up events and associated world boss to th point which other people who want to join a map are denied the access ?
Well, I guess the same that happens now. You can already grief by scaling up events and filling up maps with a bunch of players. As far as I know, this doesn’t happen. You can also lure mobs to afk characters, haven’t seen that done in this game yet.
Also, I don’t see how a one on one can scale up an event more than dead characters that don’t port to a waypoint.
No to open world PvP. Its not a good system.
Open world duels might be acceptable, but only if it was restricted until you hit level 80 (to guarantee you have all skills and traits unlocked, as well as 3 traitlines), had to be a mode where you opted-in to just being able to be sent invitations (so no spamming invitations to people who have no interest in it), and if accounts were permanently silenced if they started harassing players who didn’t want to opt in. But even then I don’t really see a point to open world duels, just use a GH arena, or duel in PvP.
Also, please make the duel pop up window at least 75% of the screen, so you wouldn’t miss it.
Wait, maybe I need to reconsider duels. Is there a reward involved? If so, I could log in two of my accounts, then endless slay an alt to reap the benefits! Woot!

This does happen to build or reduce penalties for ganking in most PvP open world games. Also a game I played can’t remember which details are hazy people did get rewards/skill increases for open PvP and would just sit and kill their own characters all day.
No, thank you, to Open World PvP.
Nonono, Nick. I too want to troll and annoy level 5 characters with 500 duel requests and send them derogatory messages when they decline!!
This is pretty much the truth of the matter every time these “PvP in Open World PvE” threads pop up.
Yeah, I’m going to have to go ahead and give two thumbs down to this request.

But that it the thing: these players actively participate and contribute to the success, whether or not they are dead or not. And If these afk players are already there on map, you don’t want more of it if you add another game mode on top of the very cooperative nature of PvE.
I say we take the “Look at the suggestion, and see where it can take us” route with this.
First of all, We don’t have easily accessible 1v1s in sPvP or PvE.
As much as it is suggested here, players WOULD NOT just be able to “Jump in” into the mists for a quick 1v1.
If you want to PvP Duel someone, it’s a complicated system of servers, until you can hopefully find a functioning server that you and a friend can (At most, hopefully) play uninterrupted. In comparison to a “Duel player” option, players have to be Introduced to the idea of being able to 1v1 in this game.
By this point, this is a feature only available to those with prior knowledge, or have showed the way.
The other way is using Guild-Hall instances for 1v1s, which while may seem easy or make some sense, it’s a small time restriction for players who might want to try, but are yet to have a guild… And a major restriction for F2P players, whom cannot use this content without HoT.
Combined with the above, dueling in this game is a feature unavailable to truly new players. This is game content of which Could have been better introduced to newer players, possibly appealing some to stay & be around for enough time to value purchasing the expansion, or gem store items.
.
IN CLOSING (tl;dr)
We have valid reason to consider an easier, more available dueling option that is easily available to newer players, and open-world dueling is a suggestion that tackles this. If we want to argue constructively here, we ought to suggest easier access to dueling, with or without open-world dueling.
(edited by Robert Williams.4872)
Easier access than:click pvp→my custom arena→name salad masterrace→team size 1→password 1234→send name and password with chat to the other?
@ Acnologia
There’s a catch to that; You need a “Custom Arena Starter Ticket” for that, and you open a server for 30 days…. Click on “My Custom Arena” yourself, really quick, and you’ll see it.
I’m all in favor of easy access to dueling, so long as it is part of PvP. Click character, right-click > Duel in PvP, both taken to an arena just for the two of them.
I know it. But for a dueller that should be a must have or duels are not what he wants.
It’s 200 Gold for an arena Ticket, and 2 Gold per extra day beyond the first 30. That’s a lot of unnecessary grinding for a dueler to have favorable conditions, or otherwise easily accessible content.
Eh. For an exclusive feature that few use that’s a right price.
-\( ’ . ’ )/- and 200g you can do that sum in 2 weeks
Second worst idea, ever.
I like wvw and I like pvp even though balance, population and skill are terrible. Don’t put it in the pve world. If each city had a section where people could enter for the express purpose of dueling – that would be a good way to isolate them and avoid clogging the zones.
No PvP in PvE!
Wait, maybe I need to reconsider duels. Is there a reward involved? If so, I could log in two of my accounts, then endless slay an alt to reap the benefits! Woot!
What. Wait. You can do that and get good rewards?
Add PvP to PvE!
__________
More seriously, the game isn’t built for PvP in PvE what with PvE being cooperative. ANet has always separated the two even though the founders came from a game with the ability to have world wide PvP (WoW) and their vision of the game doesn’t include this feature.
Who the kitten would want to grind for 2 weeks to duel, especially a new player? (To whom might benefit most from this suggestion)
There is already. But people want it free.
2 weeks of normal playing if you grind 2 weeks you can buy a legendary
new players that doesn’t even know what skills they have duelling?? Come on you want a feature for veterans. For new players there is pvp or wvw.
(edited by Acnologia.6934)
I ought to start a separate thread for that suggestion.
Who the kitten would want to grind for 2 weeks to duel, especially a new player? (To whom might benefit most from this suggestion)
Why would a new player get to duel someone if the game he started playing has never advertised dueling in the first place ? If a player wants to mainly duel, he should play games that advertise this sort of feature.
No. You want open-world PvP? Go play Black Desert Online, or just enter WvW.
a lot of people use the phrase ‘breaks immersion’ like it will raise red flags with the devs, who will of course drop anything to investigate something that ‘breaks immersion’ for a player.

Is that true?
HAVING SO FEW EMOTES BREAKS MY IMMERSION!

Yeah, because when I’m killing a load of bandits having someone come up to me and ask me to duel would not be immersion braking at all.
Do you even know what immersion means OP?

Yeah, like ghetto blasters. They would move this suggestion to the “ridiculously immersion breaking” category that is never touched again.
Just adding my own HELL NO.
This has been asked for many times and the answer always comes back that you can duel in PvP, WvW, or in guild halls. IMO, PvP in open PvE would destroy this community and drive away much of the casual player base.
Open world PvP is WvW.
PvP in PvE maps is a joke.
There would be an option of course, that will allow you to decline all duel invites if you don’t want to. And People trying to compare WvW and PvE isn’t the same because WvW is server based. You can’t “Duel” everyone you want. You most likely have to go to a guild hall and fight in the arena , where if you had a duel button when you right click on someones name , you could just send an invite to a duel. Many MMORPGs do it. No one is forcing you to do ANYTHING it was just a suggestion.
What I think would be a nice middle ground is to have set dueling areas in designated locations, like in the major cities, where you had to both be in the area and accept the option to pvp. That way, the people who do want to duel in full gear don’t have to find quiet spots in wvw for it, and the people who don’t wouldn’t have to deal with it.
No, thank you, to Open World PvP.
For once, we completely agree.
