PVP League Badges.
I’d like the option but you need to realize this:
Divisions won’t reflect player skill.
In the same way we had in the last season the entire top100 of engi turrets who played 40-50 games/daily
Legendary division will be only for two category of people:
- players who play 40-50 games daily
- players who play less games (but always 10+) daily but they go in premades 3+
That’s all

Not necessarily. At higher ranked leagues you will meet other premades even if you’re a premade yourself. You will also need a positive winrate. Therefore if you get into legendary division, it’s very likely that you’re a decent player.

As said before, this isn’t necessarily true. Obviously it’s not a direct indication of skill, which is not what I meant :P
I am merely saying it gives you a rough idea on the players experience, and therefore you can act accordingly. Is he legendary? Maximum caution. Is he Bronze? (Don’t know lowest league) Destroy him.
The maximum caution portion can be useful, I suppose. I don’t think the “oh he’ll be easy lets just take him out of the game” mentality of focusing the newbies is healthy.
As much as I WANT to be a nice guy to newbies in PVP I know for a fact if I saw they were Bronze (again, no idea on label of lowest) I would just focus them down immediately. After all, I want to win.
They may be new and unfamiliar to counters/builds, but damage/cc is damage/cc. If my group takes him out right away, that’s one less thing to worry about.
Obviously it’s situational, but no doubt a probable scenario.
Another scenario is for flaming/vitriol. Imagine you’re losing by 200 points, and there is a guy 3 ranks below you. Who is the one you naturally blame? You may be a nice guy, but if you do sPVP at all you know there are those people who will jump down the lower ranked players throat for “bringing the team down”.
That said, I enjoy the idea of badges. I PVP daily, and it’s pretty much all I do. I’ll earn a decent rank I’m sure. I just know I have friends who will focus the newbies which will likely discourage fresh meat from continuing to PVP.
Maybe we’ll get a dev response one day on it.

I’m hearing arguments for not showing badges during a match, but what about just standing around in the lobby?
Bra (80 Guard), Fixie Bow (80 Ranger), Wcharr (80 Ele)
Xdragonshadowninjax (80 Thief)
I’m hearing arguments for not showing badges during a match, but what about just standing around in the lobby?
I see no issue with them being displayed in the lobby; I mean that’s one of the whole points of a badge no? It’s some thing to be displayed. When it comes to a match, you could take a CSGO approach about it; ranks are only shown at the end of a match.

i like the idea of it displaying at the end of the match on the scoreboard the way it used to show ranks, so that why you get roflstomped by 5 legendary players you know why and that you may actually have played decent that match.
they should definitely be displayed in the mists =)
They should be visible while in lobby and match (atleast if it doesnt disturb aiming/clicking target)
Cheers

Those should appear at the end of the match and in the Heart of the mists. But not during matches. Some players may avoid or gang up on other characters based on the badges they have. That’s not the kind of info that should factor in battle. Only enemy actions should.
(edited by MithranArkanere.8957)
Great points here, but I would like to note that when you roll up on a mob and click them, you see their character portrait and know their status (legendary, veteran, etc). Maybe clicking a player should be similar.
Realistically, I see players checking everyone’s rank as soon as the port into a match, seeing 2-3 wood league nubs and AFKing the entire match because of it, with or without kittening in the map chat the entire game.
Not the best for the community.
Also, I’d like to note that I’d like my PvP rank/badge to be able to be displayable even outside of HOTM/PvP.
All of this concern is pointless if there is ANY way to easily search someone’s rank before the match starts.
In Aion Dredge people could easily look up the other teams gear to make a game plan to target a weakest link, or shutdown a strong star player before the match started. I did it, everyone did it.
When you’re seriously competitive you’ll take any advantage to win. And that delay before the match it probably won’t be to hard to look up 5 people. Lol
(Assuming you can search a name in leagues)
So I don’t see how not displaying it during a match alleviates the problem in competition.

Except in aion, dredgion was a glorified dps race and team death kill. Here you have 3points you have to simultaneously defend/attack. In Aion, it was always 6 v 6 race/tdm. So even if they know a person’s division it doesn’t matter much.
Obviously, if it is against a premade it doesn’t matter anyways.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
True, but only if the two teams DPS was DESPERATELY different.
If it was close, there WOULD be a confrontation or more determining the winner. (If you mention training I will laugh at you so hard, that’s irrelevant here)
That same methodology can be applied here. If you know the stronger or weaker players from the onset you can plan accordingly to gain an advantage. For example, peeling when you know you won’t need to help take out a low rank in order to go balance a fight on another point. Or, spotting the high rank and rotating to trap and neutralize his effect on map control.
That would be VERY valuable information for map rotation and matching up fights on point to your advantage.
If they don’t do something about that, trust me. I’ll prove just how effective that will be in having the right pawns in the right place in the board as much as possible to my sides advantage.
I’m not afraid to talk to my team and make those calls. Lol
I’m hearing arguments for not showing badges during a match, but what about just standing around in the lobby?
I think it should be just be an option hide/unhide
Let people choose if they want to show his badge with a simple hide/unhide button
Honestly if people want to show their badge during the combat they should be let to do.
Option to hide/unhide is the best way imho.
I mean if you automate the process, (like not showing badges during the fight but showing badge outside) will be always pretty easily to know which badge has the guy X so people will be capable to blame the guy (for example) in the next game without too much effort (or afk/leave complains etc etc. )

If agree on this.
I relish using the opposing teams desire to shut me down to advantage by playing to that fact to make openings for my team. This will just make that easier when making a plan. Lol

That is a terrible suggestion during a match. If you don’t show it people assume the worse, which stops being an option.
Only show badges in PvE and PvP lobby. PvP badges are no place during a match because during a match it will cause people to quit before trying.

This is not necessarily true but there could be a compromise like
- no badge during the game
- hide/unhide badge outside.

This is perfectly acceptable.
It certainly should not be visible during a match though. The potential for vitriol/afk is too high. Upon thinking more on the issue, I see what some people are getting at with if we can hide it people will assume the worst.
The greatest compromise is to just not show it at all during a match (or possibly, after it had ended..though I’d prefer not as whispers of vitriol and hate could/would still occur).
Glad to see I’m not the only one who has thought on this. Thanks for the dev response.

I know you are trying to defend your suggestion but what I said is true. My experience from previous games.
I find Evan’s question rather strange considering the main reason why they don’t show MMR is specifically to avoid issues such as these.
In any case, it is hardly an option because people will require you to do it or assume the worse. PvPer nature. I mean it is easy to pin the blame on someone.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
If people have a bad rank, then chances are they are not going to want to display it for everyone else to see. Its a matter of pride, in a way. I also hate games that display your win / loss rate as people often use that to belittle / be rude other players.

Ehm..I’m not trying to defend my suggestion lol, I agree with you, during the game, like MMR and Ranks, badge shouldn’t be visible.
But i think the hide/unhide option will be good for OUTSIDE the match, because for several reasons, people maybe don’t want to show their badge in the pvp lobby or in the other area of the game.

Frankly it should be completely invisible.
Players will quickly ostracize censure and harass anyone who doesn’t have the highest grade of badge that’s possible to have.
I like the idea of showing at the end of the match on scoreboard so you can know whether you were roflstomped by good players or noobs and be able to judge your own performance based on that. I think its better to not know at the beginning so that you don’t get over confident by going up against lower ranks or stressed out going against higher ranks. You won’t know til it’s over assuming you don’t already recognize the player names.
Should be visible at the end of matches and lobby.

If I had to vote, it would be at Lobby Only. Reason being, it adds a bit of mysticism. A player can be roaming the PvP lobby and finally see that player’s badge. Whether it’s a high bad or low badge, they’ll be equally surprised.
If it was at end of map (my second vote) it’s almost inevitable to not be grouped with some one you’ve just faced previously. They’re just going to tell their team what rank they are… then again, they could just tell them how good you were anyways… so it really doesn’t matter.
I’m sure this has been said but it should also be something the party group (or pvp lobby) can click on and immediately see what badge a person is, but hidden in matches.
Please add prestiges to GW2 PvP! Have us revert back to lvl 1. I must flaunt my time played via prestiges in addition to title rewards!

In any competitive sport both teams know the odds going into the game. You know where you rank and where the other team ranks. Doesn’t matter if it’s American Football or Chess, that’s the norm. A team should not have to wait until the end of the match to know why the lost the match or to realize what a great feet they just pulled off. Why the kitten can’t we at least try to model PvP in GW2 after real world sports and proven paradigms. It makes no sense.
I’d be seriously annoyed if you don’t allow badges during matches. Back then we had visible pvp ranks and you removed those for no reason, now we have no way of distinguishing new from experienced players. I don’t care about someone getting offended for being a lower rank than someone else, it’s a competition – deal with it. Data on your teammates is always helpful, if you see someone new you’re more likely to keep an eye on him in case he makes a mistake so you can make up for it quicker etc. On the other hand if you notice a highly skilled player you can use some more bold plays in certain situations. It’s not about bragging rights so stop with that crap nonargument. This way we’ll also have a visible data on how that matchmaking is working and give more feedback. There are 0 downsides and decent benefits.
(edited by Burn.5401)
Of course there are downsides. You make good points, but don’t be so arrogant. I have seen plenty of games where a person who is lowest ranked on a team will be blamed for a loss and cussed out, all over something they had no control over. No one is pretending it won’t be useful, but there are legitimate concerns out there as well.

In the PvE part of the game, if you don’t ping at least full ascended zerker gear and run the exact meta spec, you are persona non grata. You will get kicked.
In WvW, it’s not as rigid but if you are not GWEN or a utility mesmer and running the one allowed spec for it, you can be asked to switch or leave the map ignored for grouping not rezzed etc. Granted most WvW players aren’t this intolerant but that culture is still there to some degree because we understand that is just how the game works at the moment.
The end result is these game modes suffer from stagnation.
The last thing SPVP needs is map chat spamming “Legendary Rank Only.” Or every player with the highest quality badge logging out every time he gets a match with any team member or members who don’t have same. The constant 5 v 4 is bad enough already.

So I am arrogant because I want player info like in every other competitive game and real sport out there? Care to elaborate what’s arrogant about my post, because I don’t see anything. There will always be certain people that harass players regardless of their “rank”, I’ve seen better players that are simply quiet get harassed by bad players for no reason so what concerns does this raise?

Honestly the biggest issue is to think higher badge = more skill.
In a grinding system doesn’t work in this way.

You’ve both got decent points, there is no reason to make it hostile. It’s not necessary.
There is good argument on both sides: showing badges in-match will allow you to gauge your opponent. On the other hand, it will also let people have an “excuse” to afk/dodge the match, or abuse the newbies.
One of those arguments is easily solved by not showing the badges during a match. The other argument is much more difficult to address, because it directly conflicts with the other. This is a scenario in which you will likely not be able to please both sides.
Being competitive is fine, but being an kitten is not. Showing the badges before/during a match promote nothing but singling out individual players for abuse. You can say it allows you to “know who to watch”, but we both know that if he plays poorly most are not going to offer tips on how to improve. Also, you can pretty easily tell without a badge who is playing poorly. We don’t need a target on their head for abuse.
On the side of “knowing thy enemy” so to speak, I don’t think badges are the place for this. In the stream, they said PVP division was a PERSONAL accomplishment. It was literally designed for personal bragging rights, and bragging should be a CHOICE. Not everyone who is better than another feels the need to brag or gloat about it.
Either way, lets keep it civil guys. It’s a decent debate, and for those of us who play the game for PVP it is one that is important.
Badges should definitely be shown in the lobby, if not what’s the point? As for matches, if people object to displaying them during the game just make them visible as soon as it ends. By the way, it would be really nice to be able to view our previous match statistics (plus badges for both teams) after we get booted from the game. I really like the new information but the time we get to view it is far too short.
Badges in both places thanks. We aren’t children, sometimes people are mean for a million different reasons, and it would be bad play anyway to target somebody just because they had a lot of badges.

I agree with this. People often like to keep PvPing after the game is over, and of course I’ll jump in because that is what I’m here for. This usually means that I’ll miss out on the stats screen because I’m busy trying to settle an unfinished duel or something.

With respect, many people are children, or at least act like ones, when it comes to this kind of stuff… By far, most gaming communities are actually rather hostile.

please keep in mind that the league will reset every single tournament. so everyone will always start off in the lowest league on day 1 of each tourney.
as an aside… showing the league badge at the end of the match won’t make a difference if the stat panel isn’t available outside of the match. There are plenty of times i wanted to take a “deep dive” into my stats after a match, only to find i was kicked out of the match and no longer able to look at my stats.
[suggestion] please try to do at least one of the following:
a) make stats for the match available outside the match (every stat reported when you press [B] to bring up the stat panel)
b) do not force me out of the match instance until i confirm that i am ready to leave, so that i can take a more detailed lok at my stats for the match.
thank you for your consideration.
