Paid Tournaments: Can we blame them?
Can you provide some sort of proof other than anecdotal? Some of us follow the competitive scene without actively participating in it.
“He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
Maybe people don’t want to play in Paid tournaments because the idea of paying to play awful pvp is absurd.
It’s a wonder people still play to be quite honest.
Good teams play Paid tournaments for free, you never run out of tikets if you win, and that’s what Paid tournaments are for, they are made so that the top teams can fight eachother for qualifier points.

“Organized teams didn’t flock to the challenge of facing competent rivals, instead they stayed to stomp on pick up groups.”
Can you give some kind of proof, because I actually did not notice that, now in free tournaments even on last map I usually meet random teams (different guild tags, same professions and builds that don’t work well together)?

Pay for what? you use in game currency to play and teams that get 1-2 get more gems in return to play again while 3-4th get 4/5 tickets to play again.
Although I would like to see the ticket pay system changed up maybe like 1 for forest 1 for foefire and 3 for khylo so that teams that can’t make it past the 1st map don’t have to pay the full 5 tickets you would pay the full 5 at start but if you lose on first map you get 4 tickets refunded. (so more people que up reducings the time you have to wait)
last night was the first time since paid’s went live that I’ve seen any number of premades before the final round in free tourneys. last night was incessant though facing guild group after guild group after guild group, and primarily in the first round.
I was kinda curious as to why the sudden influx…

Yea, me and my 2 friends were wondering the same thing. We normaly only run with 3 and have 2 pugs. So the constant double guardian premades were pretty meh to have to deal with. I guess not all of these guys can cut it in Paid….
I see premades in free tournaments every match. Bads will bad, regardless if they’re a premade. For these bad premades it’s better farming if they stomp PuGs than get beaten in the first round of paids.
Tried 3 free tournament yesterday. All premades on round 3. Had to go back to sPvP rather than keep wasting my time in tournaments.
after paids went live, up until yesterday, I was making it to 3rd round regularly in pugs. not sure what happened last night. paid que seemed like it was empty from what I was reading in the map chat in the mists. maybe they all ran out of tickets already? more likely they just got tired of getting roflstomped by the premier groups is my guess.

I’m confused why don’t any of you just grab 2-3 more people and join as a group? its not hard join a guild or 2 get some in game friends and your done.
i’ve been winning 1st place in free tourneys frequently now since the paid tourneys, whereas before it was uncommon. We are starting to do a few paid tourneys but we get smashed in 2nd round. I’d say there has been a shift.
Have you tried talking? If no one talked you can’t blame them if you didn’t try. And glory ranks just show who followed the zerg longer in Spvp no skill involved I would rather have a rank 10 that got there from tpvp only then a rank 30 Spvper.

we could easily ask the same of premade groups, “why don’t they simply take their group and go fight other groups instead of pugs?”
the fact is both populations exist in any PvP game for a variety of reasons and have little success in terms of enjoyment for either party when paired together. this isn’t a mystery or anything new to the PvP scene. You’d think ANet with all their “innovation” would have planned to accommodate this.

while I agree Glory rank is not a clear indication of skill level, it is however an indication of familiarity with the maps, formats, and classes. there is a clear difference between being grouped with <r10’s and >r30’s

How the hell is the theory sound? It’s just plain stupid. Half the teams (4/8) are left without tickets and they are forced to buy more or farm them off free tPvP. Of course they’ll stay in free tPvP.
the concept of paid PvP is fine.
The problem lies in the fact that it HAS to be a tournament.
This means that a single team needs to wait for 7 other teams who happen to be on at the same time to play paid tournaments.
Unfortunately outside of US Primetime there just don’t seem to be 7 other teams. Even during US Primetime, there are only very few teams that actually participate in paid tournaments.
Basically no teams are queuing because “no one else is queuing,” and instead of wasting their time waiting hours upon hours for a matchup (this is not exaggeration. My guild has waited 3 hours with no pop at Japan primetime (GMT+9,) people just decide to go back to free tournaments.
The tournament system itself is the cause for failure. It should have been free/paid matches. Not tournaments.
