"Pip" is the most stupid buzz word I've seen
And I have been playing LoL for 5 years where clowns devs were making up some new dumb buzz words almost every day so I know my kitten.
What? They switched it because players were using pip, and players were using pip because pip isn’t some made up word, it is used for the symbols that indicate rank in the military, police, etc, so seemed appropriate to use for the symbols used to indicate rank in PvP leagues.
Maybe if you spent less time playing LoL and more time studying / reading then you would have a vocabulary larger than that of a lemon.

pardon me good sir but english is not my native language and here’s what i get from searching “pip” on google
Did you try actually, you know, looking it up in an online dictionary? No? Nothing to see here.

i didnt say that this word is made up, i said that its a buzz word, a word with a perverted meaning and sense
the reply i gave above was meant for the rude poster in whose crude imagination everyone on these forums is supposed to be a native english speaker
Every word is a word with perverted meaning since language changes over time.
Not sure why its problem anyway.

It’s true, you didn’t outright say that you thought the word was made up, but it’s at least implied. And here are two of the definitions for “pip” from Merriam-Webster:
“one of the dots used on dice and dominoes to indicate numerical value”
“a diamond-shaped insignia of rank worn by a second lieutenant, lieutenant, or captain in the British army”
I don’t really see how the meaning has been “perverted”.

this is not true and there is a ton of other words which perfectly fit the meaning they gave to the word “pip”

how do any of these definitions fit to the purpose of word “pip” in guild wars 2?
here they say “pip” to describe a point you earn for winning a match, lol

i suppose you could use that definition of word “pip” to describe a legendary level player who got there without abusing amber duoq or ganking solo players in a full premade, but thats about it

Uhm, is it really that hard to figure out? In both of the examples, “pip” means a symbol used to imply numerical value. In Guild Wars 2, a pip is a symbol used to imply numerical value. It’s not quantum physics.

Here is another word for you ‘hypocrisy’, when you start a thread with ‘clown’ devs you’ve already set the tone for your thread as “rude”, you got the reply you deserved.
And no I don’t expect everyone to be a native English speaker, but I’d expect a non-native English speaker to actually research something like this before a making a post claiming it is dumb, stupid, the devs are clowns, etc, or at least simply ask politely why the word ‘pips’ is used, unless of course they were a total idiot…

well, in some armies they use stars to define officer and/or soldier ranks, would it be correct if everyone started calling points you get for winning matches “stars”?

woa, easy there, i get it LoL has a plenty of fanboys all around the world, but you cant just go ahead and derail a thread just because you felt your favourite game’s devs were offended in some way
well, in some armies they use stars to define officer and/or soldier ranks, would it be correct if everyone started calling points you get for winning matches "stars?
Well no, they’re already called pips now, so it wouldn’t be correct; besides, they don’t look like stars and “pip” feels like a more generic term, so it works. But yeah, sure, Arenanet could have called them stars and it would have achieved the same thing, it’s still symbols representing numerical value.
I really don’t see what the issue is, except… you think pip sounds stupid. That’s your problem.

yes and im not the only one who thinks “pip” sounds stupid, i doubt Anet will get any closer to their esports dream by using that word to define rank points in their game
I dislike “meta” more than I dislike “pip”…FOTM was so much better and narrower in meaning
yes and im not the only one who thinks “pip” sounds stupid, i doubt Anet will get any closer to their esports dream by using that word to define rank points in their game
Lol, I doubt it will help or hinder them either way.

well considering that their game is already not quite taken seriously i can say that using silly words in the game’s “competitive mode” will make it even worse
Maybe if you spent less time playing LoL and more time studying / reading then you would have a vocabulary larger than that of a lemon.

I’m fairly confident that I learn and read more than the certain hypocritical crowd of grammar kittens that started to attack me out of nowhere here
especially considering that i know my native language extremely well in addition to fluently speaking english

Except it’s not a silly word, but whatever. Maybe it sounds silly in whatever your native language is, at this point I don’t even care.

Technically they were attacking your vocabulary, not your grammar. And I don’t really see how they’re being hypocrites either.
especially considering that i know my native language extremely well in addition to fluently speaking english
Not fluently enough to know a simple word like pip, apparently.

I thought we’ve already established that its my opinion which many people share with me that this word is used inappropriately in the actual context which made me start this thread, and not the false assumption that i dont know the meaning of word “pip”
and when given the completely new meaning that word admitedly is sounding pretty silly

Actually A-net was the first to start using pip when they first discussed how leagues would work the players picked it up from there. What’s a better term anyway for the dumb little things you get or lose during the season to advance. It’s as good as any.
Why is this an issue? Is this seriously worth complaining about? Go do some pvp or something.

i dont complain, i discuss
The only people who don’t like the word Pips don’t have any pips!

Nowhere have we established this, in fact, there are several quotes in this thread that point to the opposite. The fact that you still insist that pip is inappropriate in the context shows that you still don’t understand the word.

500 years ago english was totally different than now. Anyway, the game using “pip” is totally your problem. Not the game’s problem.
It is literally the least of concerns. In fact the majority of people were using pips themselves. Anet just follow that trend so people don’t get confused.

even if we follow the false assumption of yours about my unawareness of meaning of the word “pip” i still stick to my opinion that its a silly word to describe ranked arena points

as someone else clarified in this thread it were Anet employees who started using that silly word to describe “ranked arena points” before it became an official word so it were players who started to follow the trend that Anet employees set
Well, like that totally makes a difference. Still the majority uses it in the end. Theres no reason to be hipster about it. You’re totally free to say Ranked Arena Points every single time instead of just pips. Your loss.

I like the word pip slightly more than I enjoy looking at people making whole topics about why a three letter word sucks.
Zarin Mistcloak(THF) Valkyrie Mistblade(WAR) Kossori Mistwalker(REV) Durendal Mistward(GRD)
I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.
Are you daft? Pip is a military term.
Pip, a decoration worn on a military uniform to denote rank, such as on British Army officer rank insignia.
Getting good will earn you some; crying and typing on a forum won’t.

Pips are small but easily countable items.
However, who cares?
I understand PiP but not the word “kitten” that is used over and over and sometimes every other word in a sentence. It’s sad when you realize your surrounded by so many prepubescent schoolgirls.

Not sure if serious or not. The forums filter curse words into kitten.

Burn Guardian reporting for duty. We need some condi clear over here!
Hehe :p
Pip isn’t common in the U. S. Army.
Not a fan of the word selection either.
I suspect ANet used pip after seeing a Hershey commercial where they called the square of their chocolate bars pips.
Other than that, pips from a definition stand point doesn’t make sense but then again, we shoot lightning out of weapons and shoot fireballs from our kitten s.
english is not your first language, and youre ranting against a word whose very simple meaning escapes you.

pip is common in the british army and used to describe the dots on dice and dominoes. if you bothered to spend the ludicrous 10 seconds to look this up then congrats you are a winner.

Actually… pip isnt a “buzz word” its a term mostly used in financial stuff.
“Percentage in point” – search for it. Maybe then it will start to make sense to you.

This answer just made my night. Good game.
Pip is also a term used in the old Star Wars rpg by West end games to represent small improvements in the PCs skills, like when you go from 3D6 to 3D6+1 that’s one pip .. So I like it cuz I’m kinda used to it..
… I even renamed the ranks in my PvP-guild to resemble the word “pip” in every rank there.
Me and my mates find it funny :P
And OP does clearly show some salt-level (which I don’t get it where it came from) instead of having done a little research to get the various meanings of the buzz-word “pip”, which most of them actually are very good explanations for using it in GW2 for division ranking too.
And P.S. I am no native English speaker too – but that doesn’t prevent me from doing some research
And P.P.S. “pip” are also used to describe the little dots you see on radar or sonar, glowing up to show that something (you don’t know what in some cases) got hit by the scanning rays…
