So, to be matched with people of your “rank”, you just hit the Play Now button, is that right?

Whenever I have clicked that button in the past few weeks, I usually end up in a 3-person “match”. Small. Or more likely, 5 people dueling who tell me to please leave them alone.

I think your talking about the hot joins. That doesn’t have ranked, the play now button will just bring you into a random map I believe.

To be clear, hotjoin is a farce and should not be considered as part of this game. When the DEVs talk about PvP they are talking about free tournaments and previously paid tournaments. Stay away from hotjoins, they will only cause you to hate this game. It’s not representative of the PvP in GW2 at all.

They should call it Glory Ball or something, cause it isn’t conquest.

So now I just click on the tournament master and get in queue to play, and it will find me a team of similar “rank” then?

If its indeed the same system as it was at launch then hitting the play now matchmakes you into a game with people close to your pvp rank. Hope that helps. They could have however ended that system long ago.

Thanks. So I need to join free tournaments to get a rating., I guess. And I will have to join as a solo since I have no team.

If your doing hot joins my advice is to avoid the play now button and join a nearly full server manually, they are almsot always balanced.

Its the same ….Paids just become frees, so there is no new split and now we suppose to have a little higher PvP Community for Tourny since Low rank/rated teams shouldnt be afraid of joining rated games with the new Matchmaking (if it works fine). They should remove the “FREE” word and use “RANKED” or w/e like any other game does.

What im guessing is that they will give higher reward for 3 round frees Tourny otherwise it doesnt make sense, unless they cant find a way to give us map rotation for 1 round tourny, so they are keeping 3 rounds in there while they find a way to make the map rotation? dunno.

I think its a good move on the paper, i would also remove the 8v8 Hotjoin rooms so new players get a direction and try to imitate Ranked Tourny Gameplay in 5v5 rooms and not just zerg around.

Let’s look at this from a solo player’s perspective.

So hot join gives us completely random fights and we just keep getting new ones until we leave.

Tournaments give us fights that are around our skill level. If we win, we get a reward. If we don’t, not a big deal.

From the perspective of a solo player who doesn’t care whether or not they are the best (and hence, if they get paired with a bad team, it’s not that big of a deal as they aren’t losing anything in the long run), isn’t it generally a better idea to do tournaments than hot join?

Benefits of hot join:
- Not counted towards your own ranking (which the player I described above wouldn’t care about)
- Can continue on without having to wait

Benefits of tournament:
- Match accustomed to your skill level
- Get reward if you win

As sPvP becomes more popular (both due to these tournament changes and eventually due to further upcoming sPvP changes), tournaments will likely have a very short, if any, wait time.

It seems like hot join will become pretty pointless, unless hardcore sPvPers, who are potentially more skilled than the average person in hot join, want to practice sPvP without potentially screwing up their tournament ranking. Hence we get more and more people who are highly skilled PvPers being put up against, although random, people that are often, on average, not as skilled as them.

Overall, these changes are for the better, but there definitely seem to be some… for the lack of a better term, holes in the system in regards to the aforementioned.

Hardcore players will use the future custom servers to train themselves, rather than join the zerg pugs. :P Hotjoin should be fine if 8v8 is removed and glory rewards adjusted. Both changes should prevent hotjoin from being a mindless glory farm, and prepare players better for what truly is pvp in GW2. 8v8 should only exist if devs ever decide to make a 8v8 map for casual play.

The tournament and hotjoin games are completely different and require completely different mentalities and skills. It’s fine having two different PvP games.

These new changes look awesome though. Should bring a lot more people in.

I still think hotjoin should be “polished”, though. :P 8v8 is unfair compared to 5v5, because it’s much easier to farm glory there, especially by spamming AoE. Change the way glory is rewarded, and maybe have it scale down in 8v8, so that your average player does not get more glory in 8v8 than in 5v5, and it should get better. And, IMO, 6v6 matches can potentially work better than both 5v5 and 8v8 in hotjoin.

I think the hotjoin is fun, but I have not tried the other type. I don’t play spvp enough to try to get on a serious team or even a casual on for that matter becausae I don’t know when I will play— but I do enjoy it from time to time. I know that there are people against it for whatever reasons, but I really hope that single players can join in the new set ups.

Custom servers are coming soon. We’ll be able to rent them. That most likely means that they’ll require gems to allow us to rent them for a limited period of time, which I personally do not like the sound of, though they haven’t said anything more specific than “rent” as of yet.

when are you removing hotjoin? this is a serious question as it’s a serious issue. this game is hardly even balanced around 5v5. 8v8 is unbearable, noobs shouldnt be playing it, and you shouldnt be fragmenting the pop in this way.

The funny part is that when the game was in beta Anet said that Hot Join would have MM.

Imagine if they had said from day 1 we are in pvp beta.

i’d be much less irritated, and actually be enthusiastic to help them out on top of which knowing that REAL, COMPETITIVE gameplay for gw2 was coming

There will be leaderboards showing where you rate versus others; but your actual number will not be shown. They said they want to avoid people gaming the system. They probably don’t want people learning what specific actions raise or lower the number and by how much.
