Ok i am lachanche and i play dirty, dishonorably if you pass me the term.
I am of the opinion that a dishonorable victory is better than an honorable defeat.
Meet me in king of the hill, i will ask r? and backstab you from 3k range while you type.
Meet me in skyhammer and all the stability of the world won’t save you.
Meet me in 2v2 i will hug that pillar so tight that it will blush.
Meet me in legacy i will murder your lord before you even notice the door is down (or is not).

One may wonder what the point of this post is so let me further articulate the title: everyone wants to win, people would resort to any tool at their disposal in order to achieve victory, yet the majority of them will refuse to admit it.
Those who resort to cheap tricks when nobody sees them are the first to judge the ones who do it openly.
You call me dishonorable and stalk me with whisps full of hate yet you switch class in the middle of the match when my longbow hardcounters your spirits.
Those who cast their gaze upon others and feel righteous enough to label them as dishonorable, i guess you are as candid as a rank 1 fractal runner.

There are a few truely honorable players, players who abide by their words, players worthy of admiration because their resolve is so strong that playing at a disadvantage doesn’t bother them.

There are a few honest dishonorable players who speak loud and clear about the way they gain a dishonorable advantage and follow through with their deeds.

Then there are the dishonorable ones who smile at you under the sun and backstab you in the dark, guys that complain about cheap class mechanics and use cheap class mechanics themselves, guys that complain about pillar hugging and run prismatic understanding, those guys.

I say we lift the veil of hypocrisy at once, playing dishonorably is not bad behaviour, it is striving as hard as you can to achieve your goal (victory).

Dishonorable ? Please, might as well call it coherent.

The problem is that everyone has their own personal code of conduct when it comes to pvp. Some will find things acceptable and within bounds, while a group of others will not. It all comes down to ones’ opinion. I have no problem with people using regular mechanics or terrain to one’s advantage as that is fair game. I do not even care when people use cheap class specs or the like, I just refuse to use them myself nor do I complain about them. I find it more fun to actively play and counter people and challenge myself to do better and use skill. I guess it’s my own sense of pride. I will however, still tactically use terrain or knockbacks/pulls in skyhammer, because it is a part of the map and intended, whether it’s cheap or not. I will run around pillars to line of sight people and heal, because that is called tactics. I will also feign running away to wait for cooldowns, etc. and then turn around and unload on you because that is the smart thing to do. Unless it’s a set duel with specific rules, then I see no problem in these things.

I find things like spawn camping (not that it really happens in this game) and the like deplorable though, as well as outright cheating and glitching mechanics that weren’t intended. Everyone is here to play/fight/test each other and these things are counter productive to promoting more players or community.

I am within the mind of “Do what it takes to win, but within reason”.

The way I see it, you claim to play in ways that people consider terrible for morality, using cheap tricks and all. If you play like this EXPECT people to crap all over you.

YOU are aware that you a ruining people’s fun for your own, so EXPECT them to hate you. Its YOU’RE DECISION to play like this, take the CONSEQUENCES like a boss. Or else don’t even PLAY if you can’t handle just that.

People like me who never Push/Pull on skyhammer and never glitch the gates or treb for an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE will hate you for this, its very annoying, like being slapped in the kittening face. There’s no honour in video games, you do what you need to do to win, period.
An ‘honour code’ exists when players try to invent their own rules to suit their own advantages.
ie.

  • No running or healers in GW1
  • No running or ganking in GW2
  • No cheese in SC2
  • No healing in DS
the list goes onnnnnnnnnn and onnnnnnn

Your personal rules don’t apply to anybody else, as long as you’re not breaking the game rules (ie. hacking, botting, etc.) then EVERYTHING IS FAIR GAME.

The fact that you came on the forums to say this means you actually DO care about your own personal honour code. You have literally created exactly the same system that you’re trying say is stupid, the irony is hilarious.

It doesn’t actually mean anything to be dishonorable in a video game, I suggest you cease to give a F and less QQ moar Pew Pew.

Winning is one thing having fun playing is another. I can switch to hambow (or any other flavour of the month) all day and feel like a zombie, or I can play something else and get a sense of “achievement” when I win something.

Both are right, one plays to win the other plays to have fun.

There’s no such thing as dishonorable playing. Hugging pillars, fine. Backstabbing someone who’s dueling in a non-duel server? Fine. Using Knockback on Skyhammer? Fine.

The line gets drawn on the fourth one. That is not dishonorable. That’s just flat out cheating by exploiting a glitch in the game. No one who’s semi-competent would get angry at you for dishonor. Everyone will be justifiably angry at you for abusing a glitch and cheating.

Since you fully admitted to doing so, I do hope you get some sort of account discipline as well.

There is a little issue… in real life winning some times is mandatory for ( as an example ) survival , gaining some wealth or for other reasons into the physical realm, so you absolutely must win even with underhanded tactics .

In a game like this winning means that you are GOOD in THIS game.
That you have reflexes, a brain for strategy, coordination or all of this.

Winning is purely for emotional satisfaction and nothing “real” can be achieved by it. This means that when you winning inside the rules ( the game rules not the fictional rules that some people have into their heads ) you are feeling an emotion like “kitten yeaaaa!!! im trully awesome in this!!”

When you are winning by an exploit or a bug or by attacking before ready in a DUEL server then you feel what ? The "F….ck YEAAA im useless and i cant win if i fight fair because lets face it i’m inferior and i have not the common decency to try to be better " emotion?
If that’s ok with you then ok. But you know… its just sad

There is no such things as playing honorably or dishonorably there is only playing within the rules or outside of them. For one thing every person probably has a different idea about what playing honorably means anyway. Exploiting is cheating aka playing outside of the rules and wrong. Talking about honor with games is usually something losers drone on and on about the people that get mad when a better team rolls up the score on them. When I used to play competitive sports I never got mad when we get whitewashed I accepted we just weren’t good enough.

@Merlin Dyfed Avalon that would be against the user agreement, the only one line that everyone agrees must not be crossed.

@OverlordOutpost How can you draw such a dinstinct line when even anet stance is so unclear on the matter ? Just look at the perfect snowflake banwave and the recent one regarding line farming, those things where working as intended from the point of view of the players but they weren’t from anet point of view. As long as anet doesn’t clearly label something to be against the rules it stays in a moral grey zone, if you don’t want to use it fine, that’s your buisness, but using it falls within the definition of “clever use of ingame mechanics” because it could as well be intended for that thing to work in that way.

@Xaos who are you kidding ? if people really wanted to show how skilled they are you wouldn’t see lame builds all over the place, people want to win for the sake of winning.

@Jax that’s inspiring, i find the fact that you are probably right slightly disturbing, i don’t know how to reply just yet but i’ll look into that.

What is that you don’t understand ?
I know perfectly well that people do that. but not all the people, the young ones OR the sad ones. The

When you are winning by an exploit or a bug or by attacking before ready in a DUEL server then you feel what ? The "F….ck YEAAA im useless and i cant win if i fight fair because lets face it i’m inferior and i have not the common decency to try to be better " emotion?

part of my response didn’t say that people don’t do this, but that people that do this are sad FROM MY PERSPECTIVE. Because a win in a game via cheating will give you
nothing, except empty satisfaction aka…. SAD !
I hope its clear now :P

And in case that you are trying to say “Well a heckload of people play that way and i’m
proud to join them” then i’m commenting you for your honesty, but don’t try to make excuses for your self or to justify it because a wrong think is WRONG even if the whole
world keeps doing it.

And as about lame builds, YES its irritating, i have had never try one, but i cannot tell the
others to not play it, because is in the game rules and because some people just don’t have
the same reflexes or even keyboards and mice. So easy builds is the only thing that
can play for enjoying the game. ( the abusers of this builds is another matter )

The only time you should ever fall to your death in Skyhammer is when you either make a mistake and miss the tell that you were about to get knocked off/pulled or when you miss-calculate a dodge roll lol. Everyone complains about Skyhammer, but now that the glory reward is the same for win/loss what’s there to complain about other than what may be your fault for lack of skill on this map?

I’m playing as an elementalist and rarely as power necro never an easy cheesy or bugged build. That’s just for clarifying.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read my whole post before you answer or
try to understanding it first .

Cheating ? what we are talking about is completely within the user agreement of anet, you considering it cheating doesn’t make it cheating.

I was speaking only for ACTUAL CHEATING OR EXPLOITING ( you know what i mean
i don’t want to enumerate the various exploits ) that’s not in the user agreement. I never said anything about pillars, LOS etc.

Why exactly would playing to win be a wrong thing ?

Where i said that its wrong to play for the win? Please tell me how you
reach this conclusion from my post. Really. How. I said that if you play ONLY
for empty wins ( not by skill, strategy, or good coordination ) and with
practically not any reward then you must be a sad person
( because you draw pleasure from…what? A chest in your screen ? ). If you still cannot
understand what i’m saying here, then please don’t try it. Obviously
we do not share the same opinion and our logic is incompatible

I am pretty sure you yourself would prefeire winning as a warrior rather then loosing as a mesmer, yet you are here ready to judge others who do the same.

Yet again you are jumping to conclusions AND you try to emulate my psych … well
i do not prefer a win that i do not deserve at all. I hate it , i feel like an uselles
person and i want to win with my power because THATS THE WAY I FEEL.
And i never judge anyone. Were i did that? In the EXAMPLE about right and wrong?
I just stated how I feel about it.
And i will tell you something to think about. Why do you created this post? To fight
hypocrisy ? Try to read aloud your post, from my perspective its full of defensive tones
and a try to force your opinion to others. But rest assured i will not create a post
with a title “So many dishonorable players… banned them all” for i think they
are hypocrites.

I think we have come to an agreement.
If what you do can get you banned, you went too far.

Where i said that its wrong to play for the win?

I was under the impression that you considered cheating the examples i talked about, since that stuff doesn’t get you punished by anet i consider it playing to win, not cheating.
You said “a wrong think is WRONG even if the whole world keeps doing it”, was this specifically about cheating ? Was this about people who use cheap tricks to win ?
Or maybe it was just a broad example and i misunderstood your reply lol.

i do not prefer a win that i do not deserve at all

Then you have my respect, you are one of the few coherent honorable players.

And i will tell you something to think about. Why do you created this post?

I was listening to this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYnFIRc0k6E and i felt inspired. Looking back I guess Jax was right, I came here to point out the contradictions of the “honor system” without noticing that I was making the same mistakes.
