I play solo queue tournaments and it is fun. You win some, you lose some. However, I find myself forced into a defensive role.
In my experience everyone wants to be the roamer or the dmg dealer. To ensure the best team composition I play guardian or bm ranger which is fun. I wouldn’t mind some variety though. A lot of times when I try to play dmg dealer, I find my team lacking a defensive player. (The games with three guardians are really rare.)
I am not ciritizing the game but the mentality of the players. The same thing happens in other games like Dota2 where I am forced to play the support role as well lest the team has 5 carries.
Yep, people dont bother with chaning chars to get the best comp possible. 4 thieves? no problem, 3 rangers? no problem. if we had a pre game screen to select 1 of the characters we have (like LoL) maybe people would start to care.
Agree with you, i often duo queue with my brother, i am playing guardian and he is playing mesmer, so he makes a portal at close and i am holding mid, rest of pug can play what they want, but in a 90% cases they are roamers or ppl who are playing first time and dont know what to do, so they are just dying in fights and dont caping points, beacuse they think it is a deathmatch or what..
But i enjoy playing guardian, i dont have that feeling that i am forced to play this role, but still this is an issue and a i agree with ahuba, maybe some kind of a pre game screen would be nice, or maybe just a better tutorial for new players, so they will know, what roles are needed in a games and why are they important? Dunno if it can solve this problem..

the matchmaker should take care of this actually. for now it seems like it randomly puts pugs together in the order they signed up.
8 of 10 random groups consists out of 3 thiefs and 2 rangers or similar and face a well balanced premade. as if this this weren’t bad enough already it also randomly mixes levels. a team consists out of four level 1 (who often can’t even find out of the base) and 1 lvl 30 is just totally common. and lets not forget about the 3 or 4 vs 5 matches they are pretty common too.
go in with a balanced premade = win 9 out of 10 (since you match see below mostly)
go in with a matchmaker generated party = mostly a disaster
